Gehört natürlich dazu, zumal wir den Portwein-Hotspot Villa Nova de Gaia vom Camping aus bequem per Rad erreichen konnten. Doch ein Abend genügte uns vollauf: nicht weil wir zuviel getrunken hätten, sondern weil uns dieser Ort als reine Kulisse, als Tourismus-Magnet und als ziemlich künstliches Marketing-Produkt "einfuhr".Read more

We really enjoyed our full day in Porto today, even with the bad weather. It started out rainy and cold but finished with beautiful blue skies.

We apparently feel the need to climb every tower we find … so climbed another one here. 241 steps to the top and the bells started ringing while we were on it!!

Portugal is known for their use of ceramic tiles on their buildings - particularly light blue designs. Very pretty. So we went to their train station which was decorated everywhere with them. You’ll also find them on the outside of so many buildings.

There were a lot of cathedrals here, but only chose to visit a few this time - tried to find the ones that were unique, or different from what we had already seen.

Then we headed to the water to finally cross the Dom Luis I bridge. We walked across the bottom level (for pedestrians and cars), walked on the other side of the river, took a gondola 🚠 up the hillside, and then walked across the top level (pedestrians and metro trains). Great views from up there!

Little known fact, JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series lived in Porto when she began writing. Many of the things here in the city are credited as her inspiration for her books — and as we walked around, we could definitely see it. We felt as if we were actually in a Harry Potter novel at times. (Even more than the Harry Potter land in California!) There is a book store here where she used to do a lot of her writing, that has these amazing staircases — which again, are a thing in the books. You have to pay to get into the bookstore now because of the draw to see it (entrance goes toward price of a book if you buy one tho so..) so with Jordan being a HUGE Harry Potter fan, we couldn’t pass it up. portugal has always been on my bucket list, so loving the pics...the dom louis bridge almost looks like one of the bridges on the ship canal up in seattle only bigger. Hang in there on the travels. It's hard to not feel as smart as you are, only because of a language barrier.....but only one break down so far is pretty darn incredible. Excited to see where you are heading next.

Thanks. Most days I do great, just gets to me once in awhile. The bridge was actually engineered and designed by the same man who built the Eiffel Tower - Gustavo Eiffel. Easy to see some similarities in the construction.

I have always had Portugal on my radar for retirement - Definitely wouldn’t settle down in Porto, tho. Beautiful to visit, but don’t think I’d want to live here. Many reasons, but definitely way too hilly - especially considering I’m just getting older. We’ll see how Lisbon and the Algarve coast strikes me.

Küstenstrände, Cascais und Porto

Auf dem Weg nach Porto machen wir Halt an einer gigantischen Felsküste mit dem schönsten Strand überhaupt... Die Felsen blühen in verschiedenen Farben und das blau türkisene Meer im Hintergrund bildet einen schönen Kontrast. Wir klettern zu dem puderfeinen Sandstrand hinab, aber alle Mühe lohnt sich, der Strand mit dem spitzen Felsen vor uns im Wasser ist einfach was besonderes🥰.
In Cascais könnten wir echt länger bleiben, aber wir müssen "leider" weiter, Richtung Porto. Cascais ist ein bisschen wie Lissabon, mit den gemusterten Straßen, den vielen bunten Läden und Restaurants und dem bunten Treiben auf der Straße... Nur in klein und am Meer mit schönen Stränden und einer Promenade an felsigen Küsten entlang... Die Nacht verbringen wir zwischen den beiden Städten in einem Kautschuk Wald am Strand. Eigenartiger und schöner Ort 🌳🌞🌅.
Porto ist auch eine schöne Stadt, ähnlich wie Lissabon am Fluss gelegen versprüht sie portugiesischen Großstadt Charme... Uns zieht es nach zwei Tagen und "100 000 Schritten" mehr im Gepäck 😉 aber wieder weiter, Richtung Spanien zurück, Bilbao wartet...Read more

bei den Fotos von den schönen Stränden an der Atlantic Küste kommen Erinnerungen auf .uns hat es auf dieser Strecke noch besser gefallen als an der Algarve. am schönsten war es in der Gegend um sesimbra und arrabida

Douro River Cruise

Just starting our cruise with a ride through Porto to the river. We boarded the boat, and they lost my bag! From the dock to the room shouldn't be too tough. It was apparently delivered to the wrong room. Linda spotted it in the hall.
The rooms are fine with an efficient use of space. One wall is all window.
Beautiful weather in Porto today, with sunshine and about 70° F. We shove off in the morning. Looking forward to a relaxing week away from the rigors of retirement (all except Linda. She won't retire for a couple of months!)
Portuguese is a very interesting language, sounding to me as much like Russian as Spanish! Nice folks and the crew knows English 👍. Looking forward to this next week.Read more

9. Tag: Ledesma🇪🇸 - Porto 🇵🇹

Im Morgengrauen ging es bereits Richtung Porto und wir wurden mit einem wunderschön Sonnenaufgang belohnt. Über die Grenze nach Portugal und weiter zum Douro Tal. Kurz vor Pinhao ging es über eine wunderschöne - aber sehr abenteuerliche - Single Road durch die Weinberge. Glücklicherweise kam uns kein Trecker entgegen, obwohl die Weinlese im vollen Gang. Sehr steile Anstiege und Kurven. Immer weiter am Duoro entlang und dann waren wir in Porto! Halbzeit unserer Reise, kaum zu glauben, wir haben es bis an das westliche Ende von Europa geschafft! Es erwartete uns ein herzlicher Empfang der beiden Städte Porto und Gaia und die Brücken Dom Luis I und Ponte Maria Pia sind einfach wunderschön. So wie die ganze Stadt Porto! Morgen fahren wir dann Richtung Osten und treten unsere Rückreise an.Read more

We flew from Madrid to Porto, Portugal this morning! I’ve always been interested in Portugal - debated moving here short term or even retiring here - so thought it would be nice to actually see it all first hand. We’ll see what I think after about ten days.

On all travel days, we don’t schedule much to do - just wander the city, experience it, and get a feel for what we’re interested in seeing. We’ll only be in Porto for 48 hrs so not much time to mess around.

When we landed, on exiting the plane we were greeted with 100% 60° Oregon, overcast sideways rain - first cold and rain we’ve really seen on this trip. Was quite the surprise, and according to the people we’ve talked to it’s the first rain in 30 days, will only last thru tomorrow and probably won’t rain for another month …. So … I guess we experience Porto in the rain.

It settled down long enough for us to walk around the city and to take a boat ride on the main river thru town. The streets here are amazing — just narrow alleyways everywhere you look. And Porto is built on a hill, so there are HUNDREDS of steps wherever you go. The architecture is beautiful and they cover the buildings with these ceramic tiles — very unique.

We decided we needed a break from “foreign food” and actually ate lunch at a Steak & Shake - it was awesome and felt like home.Read more
