      Reality Sets in-Climbing Higher

      April 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

What a tough day! I think I underestimated how difficult some days would be. The terrain goes from pavement to boardwalk then cobblestone and forest with rocks and tree roots. It was mostly uphill- patience was my key word. Hiking 🥾 in these conditions makes travel take much longer. We are walking 8-12 hours a day. The scenery is beautiful and the pilgrims are all so friendly. Someone asked me if a was enjoying the Camino…..I just stared and didn’t have a response. Mom always said if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all! “Keep on Trekking”.Read more

      What a Day 😳

      September 4, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Ok guys I've had a shocker of a day but come through the other end unbowed !!! A lots of my own stubbornness , others well actually most of it my own stubbornness by maintaining I was able to stay by the coast all day , as my app showed and spent 2hours and 8 K proving myself wrong Then when I got back on track met incredible hills , technology letting me down ...
To be blunt on a 31k day I ended up walking 37k nearly 50000 steps. I don't have any visual record of the day except for a few photo oh and my first Camino blister .

On the good side having arrived at a brand new Albergue attached to an abbey on top of a big hill which has a funicular train and yes it has broken down and I had to walk 3k more up hill and not being sent the code to get in . I was let in by a Belgium couple who along with me are the only ones staying in this big Hostel . We even put our clothes together to share the cost of the laundry 6 € split 3 ways . Looks like a room to myself too suppose all's well that ends well !

I'm also met some lovely people

      Une journée tumultueuse!

      September 14, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

      Viana Do Castelo

      October 15, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      What. A. Day. 31,8 km!
Alex, a German guy I met yesterday, and I decided to go off road and properly hug the coast because my legs and feet were hating the cobbles. We were the only ones. We got lost several times, racked up some extra kms we did not need, walked the most challenging terrains but talked all day about biochemistry, diving, evolution, the importance of psychopaths and empaths in society, Thai cave rescues and so much more.

We met the rest of the gang at about 4km from our destination which was a monastery up 750 steps. You read that right: ZEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY STEPS, to find the albergue needed pre-reservation (which we did not have).

All for the washer and dryer and the experience of sleeping in a monastery.

      Oh the Camino... ❤️

      Marinhas -> Viana do Castelo

      August 15, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Also erstmal alles super.

Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

      August 19, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

At the top of Monte de Santa Luzia, stands the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Visible from kilometers away, the building crowns the city of Viana do Castelo or, as the locals affectionately call it, the Princesa do Lima.

Canonically erected in the Parish of Santa Maior, it was founded in 1884 by Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa, who suffered from vision problems from an early age and who, in 1882, began to frequent the small chapel of Santa Luzia, paying devotion to the Santa and having masses celebrated.

When he felt improvements in his condition, being able to glimpse the magnificent panorama that the top of Santa Luzia offers, he decided to make this place a better known and accessible point. Thus, he founded the Confraria de Santa Luzia, with the aim of promoting and giving due worship to Santa Luzia, improving the small chapel and its access, namely through the construction of a road.

Day 3 of Camino De Santiago

      September 5, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

So day 3 was even more bleh than day 2. It started off rainy and muggy again. Today, I saw less pilgrims. Maybe 10 at the church in the morning to get our stamps then everyone dissipated. I walked with the gay couple from the hostel for about an hour and then stopped to get a bite to eat for breakfast so they went on their way. From there I had the choice to stay on the marked path or go towards the ocean on the "riskier" unmarked path. Since this was on the ocean, I decided to choose this way. Not to late after I was starting to regret my decision! Not only was the path on the ocean unmarked, but it was sand dunes after sand dunes of climbing. Not to mention there were bulls everywhere on this beach. I've never seen bulls on a beach. I was praying they would stay put. They did. My feet were hurting so bad at that point that I decided to take my shoes off and walk bare feet in the ocean. Was it ever freezing!! (Please remind me to go somewhere in the Mediterranean after this walk 😑) But it was better than taking the suffering from the blisters. To give you an idea, of the pain I decide to cut up pads to tape to my socks inside my shoes.. 😑😐.

The more you walk the camino the more you will try anything to heal the pain you are creating!!!

Anyway. 30 km later I had arrived at the ferry to cross over to Viana Do Castelo. This wonderful town. My GPS gave another 55 minute walk to my albergues. You've got to be kidding me! How did I not notice this when I booked it! Ugh. If I thought that was bad! I get to a the flight of stairs to go up to Santa Luzia. Well. That's the way to my room for the night! There must of been something like 500 steps. If someone can find out how many there were please do tell me! It felt like 1000 at this point. About half way through I notice a funicular going up from the city to the top. You have to be f*cking kidding me!!! 😡😡😡 #%×*$#!!!! Thanks GPS for telling me I had another option!

Many breaks later and some cursing - I get to the top. Why would someone do this walk and put themselves through this much suffering! The albergue was nice but strange. Almost too quiet. On top of that the doors didn't have a lock. I guess I'll be sleeping with one eye open. I used the funicular to go get some food in the city and called it a night at 8pm. Let's hope tomorrow is better.
