      A Sunny Day!

      April 3 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I had to take it easy today, and only did 18 km's to Sao Joao da Madiera. The albergue here is very different. It is in a room in a wing of a hospital! I hope it is not an insane asylum, or I might not get out! It is called Santa Casa da Misericordia. Google it and somebody let me know. In 2 more days I will be in Porto. Just a straight forward sunny walk today. Have a look at the pics.Read more

    • Matschepampe

      May 25 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      I Yam What I Yam!

      April 2 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was a rainy and muddy walk thru
the endless eucalyptus forest today, but I did find this great pic of Popeye! I Yam what I Yam, a pilgrim. After being drenched on the 26 km walk, I arrived here at a very nice donativo albergue run by a fellow pilgrim named Paul. He cooked a very good dinner for us all, and told us alot about Portugal. Only 20 km's for tomorrow.Read more

      Porto Tag 2

      April 13 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Camino Day 2

      September 15, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Albergaria-a-Nova to Oliveira de Azemeis 14km
We are planning to do a few stages of 15km or so for the first few days to get used to the walking routine. We weren't able to train as much as last time and there is a Camino saying "start like an old person, finish like a young person" so hopefully that plan works. There aren't as many places to stay between Lisbon and Porto, so options are a bit limited. We started walking around 7. Met and chatted to a Portuguese fella for a while until we reached the first cafe for some morning tea, then walked by ourselves the rest of the way. Not too many other walkers around, but a few big groups of cyclists. The highlight of the day was walking through the old part of a historic village.
We'd booked into a fancy hotel for the night for a pilgrim price of €70, and arrived a bit after 1pm, so an early finish. Had a look around town and just back after dinner.
Forecast isn't great for the next few days, so looks like we're in for some rain 😳. Booked a B&B for tomorrow night.

      Etapa 11: Águada

      January 17 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Ami didn’t spend too much time there, but Águada is a super picturesque city! I stayed at an Alburgue that was also a hotel and it seemed like I was the only one there, so they have me a really nice private room for only 15 euros. I spent the evening relaxing and also ate a huge meal that consisted of an orange, and apple, a soup and an entire BBQ pizza from Lidl. Not sure why my aspirate was so huge today, but I for sure have had to had refueled on calories with this meal because it was at least like 2,500 calories.Read more

      Stop and Go

      January 17 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Today had a forecast of rain the whole day, but only about a 30% chance every hour. What that meant in practice was that about every hour it rained quite hard for about 5 minutes, and then was very sunny afterwards.

So today, there was a lot of of my sensing that rain was about to fall and scrambling to find shelter as I really didn’t want to walk all day in my rain gear.

It was quite a pretty walk today though that took me through several small towns and some more Eucalyptus forests which I have now learned are harvested to make paper.

    • The Trek Begins

      September 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Sept 16, 2024. First day of the big adventure. Today's plan includes 21km, a little over 13 miles. The severe wild-fire smoke will make that a challenge.

Instead of my planned early start, some of the group wanted breakfast, and hotel decided to open breakfast later than usual. "Live in the moment," I said to myself, it's OK to start at 9 instead of 7am.

We began our walk out of Porto along the Duoro river all the way to the sea. This was all sidewalks along busy streets, and we passed only a few other pilgrims and wished them BOM CAMINO as we passed by making great time at over 3 miles per hour. We turned north along the coast and were disappointed to see that the sky was NOT much clearer here, the breeze was bringing more smoke and ash as the day progressed. We got our second and third stamps at tourist information spots. After a few miles, the crowded streets became quiet, and then finally, we reached pathways separated from the road. The whole group caught up together for a simple lunch at a beach-side cafe -- burgers and fries were main feature but I risked and enjoyed a ahi style tuna salad.

By 3pm we had found our private home in Labruge, and were so happy to see that our luggage had been delivered. The system worked! Joe and I walked a couple blocks to a little store for wine, water, and appetizers. 3 nice big bedrooms--Kiki and I in a twin room are finding we share space nicely.

Here's where the fun began for me... everyone else on the group finally came to my side of the Live in the Moment argument. The couples began their plan for daily distances and places that were available each night for next 13 nights. It is a LOT of work to make it all come together -- you have to move forward enough to make it to the end on time, but not so far each day that you're walking in the dark in pain, and so many hotels had no vacancy. I got to chuckle, and commiserate, as they struggled. They're not done, but at least have several days planned ahead and can again begin to enjoy the moments.

One couple went out to dinner, but the rest of us just enjoyed the appetizers. Now ready for a good night's sleep.

      Day 13 to Malaposta

      May 8, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Before we talk about today, let us tell you about last night. Casa Catolica is the best pilgrim experience!!. Paulo welcomed us, showed us the kitchen with fresh drinks and snacks, where to do laundry and hang in the garden, our room, the hammocks, and invited us to make ourselves at home. Oh yeah, and dinner was at 7:30. Casa Catolica is between towns so there is no where to go to eat or to shop for groceries. We showered and then socialized with the other pilgrims.

We met a wonderful couple, Eddie and Elizabeth from Cleveland, Ohio and Fia (Fiona) from Ireland. Fia is only 28 years old and travels for a living. She goes somewhere and works, saves money, and then travels somewhere new. She spent the last two Christmas seasons in Lapland, Finland as an elf in the magical ice castle. On the Camino she spends some nights sleeping in her hammock in the woods or behind an abandoned building. She thinks she wants to settle down and she is using the Camino to figure out what she wants to do. She has been in 27 countries.

Paulo runs the Alberque. He definitely has a gift for hospitality. He knew everyone staying there by name and would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He usually has about 8 pilgrims a night, but tonight, because of the Fatima pilgrimage, there were 22 pilgrims there last night. He made room for as many as possible, putting mattresses on the floor. He even made sure that Jeff and I had beds and not bunk beds or on the floor, because we were older! There were 25 people for dinner from at least 5 different countries. What an experience! We had meat, vegetables, potatoes, eggs, bread, olives, wine, dessert, and an homemade orange after-dinner liquor. And all for a donation. It was a lot of fun. If you ever want a Camino experience without the walking, volunteer at an Alberque like this one!

Today was what is becoming a usual day. A lot of street walking, mostly through suburbs, though we did walk on some authentic roman roads from at least the 15th centuries. We did 17.1 miles today and a lot of very tall hills. It was in the low 70's and there was a nice breeze. We are staying at a hotel as there are few accommodations between here and Porto.

We had a fantastic seafood dinner for two, a bottle of wine, appetizers, and after dinner drink for about $55 .

Many pilgrims take a taxi from here to Porto because tomorrow involves a lot of main road walking. We intend to walk it all but we reserve the right to take a cab if the road conditions are not safe.
