      Porto - Sintra

      May 18, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We had one night spare before we dropped the car back in Lisbon, so we decided to head back to the mystical town of Sintra and took the day to stop at some gorgeous wee towns along the way.

📍 Aveiro - known as the Venice of Portugal, not sure I’d quite agree but definitely a cute stop!
📍 Costa Nova - charming fishing village with cool striped colourful houses
📍 Coimbra - oldest university in Europe, the library is worth doing

Driving the back streets and towns on this route is a must!

Our last minute Air BnB booking in Sintra was an absolute win! Would definitely recommend the boutique hotel, La Quinta Dos Lobos. We had the most gorgeous sunset from our room with some delish local wine gifted by the hotel. 😋 The perfect end to our Portugal road trip. We absolutely LOVED it and will definitely be back!

Earlyish start, quick garden sweat and we were off to Lisbon to fly to Balcelonaaaaaaa for the F1!

The Peacocks of Quinta dos Lobos

      October 24, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The peacocks on the property we stayed at in Sintra were quite tame and beautiful. On the morning we were leaving they finally put on a bit of a show and shook their tail feathers. They were trying to impress one of the pea hens but she was having none of it.Read more

      Quinta dos Lobos

      October 22, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We were up early this morning for our bus trip to Sinatra. Felipe, our UBER driver, was on time and got us to the large and modern Campanhã bus station with plenty of time to spare to catch our 8:25 am bus, which ended up being a bit late. The journey was about 3.5 hours, and it rained for much of the journey. At just under 15 euros each for the 280 km journey (seat plus luggage), this was amazing value.

We arrived in Sinatra a bit after 1 pm and grabbed a cab to take us to our hotel - it cost about the same as the bus trip! It was lovely to be back in Sinatra with its narrow winding streets, colourful buildings and palaces.

The Quinta dos Lobos (Farm of the Wolves) hotel we stayed at was recommended by Nadia, who we met on our 2019 trip to Portugal when she took us on a day trip to Sintra. The hotel was owned and designed by an artist friend of her’s, Dayane, has only been open for a year and has only eight rooms. We had to wait about 30 minutes to get into our room. The nice guy on reception made us a coffee to have while we waited. The hotel is located in large grounds, which are lovely, with peacocks roaming freely.

Our room was in a separate building from the main hotel building, and was only completed about a month ago. It was large, stylish and comfortable, and the hotel is gorgeous.

Quinta da Regaleira - more pics

      October 1, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

There was so much to see at this beautiful estate, below are some more lovely photos of what we saw. Nadia also told us that once António’s wife died he didn’t spend much time at the property. His son lost the property as a result of his gambling, and it changed hands a number of times. A rich Chinese guy bought it with the intention of moving it brick by brick to China - seriously - what was he thinking. Finally the Portuguese government purchased it and turned it into an historic site for all to enjoy and experience.Read more

Palace Quinta da Regaleira - Gardens

      September 21, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

》Monumental architecture during the late 18th Century in Portugal seeked to express a golden age of discovery. This extends beyond its buildings and into its parks.

One of the things I love about the Quinta da Regaleira is how its gardens are a living collection. Here, there are species of trees from all over the world. There are sequoias from North America, Magnolias from South East Asia, Cycads from Central America and even the Norfolk Island Pine from New Zealand. It is not surprising that Monteiro, a biologist and an avid traveller, planted these trees to bring the world into his garden.

》Chalet Biester – the film set for Johnny Depp’s ‘Ninth Gate’

Ernesto Biester, a Portuguese journalist and playwright of German origin, famous in his time, ordered this mansion to be built in around 1880 from the architect José Luis Monteiro. Its interior was conceived by the famous Italian that worked on Quinta da Regaleira, also in Sintra, and the sceneries of La Scala Opera in Milano, and theater São Carlos in Lisbon: Luigi Manini – and the sculpture Leandro Braga. Biester asked Monteiro to use the English style called ‘Queen Ann’ style, a mixture of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romantic. The result is one of the most important buildings of his career and of Portuguese revivalist architecture, the Biester Chalet. Interestingly, all the four façades are completely different from each other, using a harmonious composition of various elements and of various architectural and decorative styles.

The chalet sits on the way to Pena Palace, perfectly fitting its surroundings. Its gardens are simple and perfect, adding to the artistic effect of the chalet. The house became an attraction and a landmark for Sintra, and is one of the first buildings and finest examples of chalets of its kind. I was lucky enough to visit it in about 1994 when it was rented by an American family. Impressive. The inside has a centralized plan with a large staircase. The house is well organized by use, practical, has a couple of kitchens, a second ‘service staircase’ more in hiding and an interior chapel. Even if every tenant changes some of the furniture, they cannot change the impressive woodwork and stain glass windows, yet the house was still ‘homey’. If you want to see its inside, watch the movie, the Ninth Gate!

      Palace Quinta da Regaleira

      September 21, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

》Sintra is home to many extravagant 19th-century villas, but none are more intriguing than the Quinta da Regaleira.

This grand house is a fusion of eccentric, neo-gothic architecture and whimsically decorative features. However, the main attraction of Quinta da Regaleira is its gardens. These are not the conservative gardens of a conventional stately home, but those of an owner fascinated with secret religious orders and mysticism.

It is speculated that the owner used the grounds for secretive ceremonies and was a member of the Knights Templar. Found within the gardens is a hidden cave network and forested pathways that connect the ornamental lakes, chapel and - the highlight of Quinta da Regaleira - the Poço Iniciático (The Initiation Well).

      Sintra - Quinta da Regaleira

      May 1, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After lunch it was time for another UP walk to get to the Quinta - oh my legs!
From my research I knew the Quinta was going to be a place that I wanted some time to wander and explore but the main goal was the Initiation Well. What we didn’t realize was that we would have to wait in line almost an hour to get to the well to start the winding journey down. Thankfully we headed there first and stood in line with all the others to experience this highlight. It was really very cool and on such a hot sunny day, the change in temperature was a welcome relief as we made our way to the bottom.
At the bottom of the well are a number of tunnels to explore and we wandered around exploring never knowing what we might find around the next corner.
We made our way back to daylight and explored some more towers and turrets until Kev called out to Bailey and I to see what he had found. We wandered back and wondered what he wanted. His simple explanation “I found a hole in the rocks and figured you guys would want to see what was inside” 😂
He had found one of the entrances to the Labyrinth Grotto and it was so much fun! Dark and damp and twists and turns (thankfully we had flashlights on our cell phones!) I think it was truly my second favourite part to the Quinta.
We could have easily spent hours at the Quinta (we really didn’t see so much of it) but the day was coming to an end and we were all exhausted.
Again the plan had been to try and catch the train back to Lisbon but we opted for the slight additional cost of an Uber straight back to our hotel - best decision ever I’m pretty sure.

      Sintra - Quinta da Regaleria

      June 26, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Goodbye Lisbon, welcome Sintra. Sintra is a very touristic city only 30 minutes by car from Lisbon. There are several villas, palacios and a castle to visit. We decided to visit the Quinta da Regaleira, a palacio with a huge wild garden and very cool grottos.
