      Albergue Sao Tiago Labruge

      June 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

After walking 25 kilometers (15.9 miles), we arrived at this albergue or “hostel.” We chose a room with 8 bunk beds (16 mattresses), empty when we arrived, but now mostly full. There are plugs next to each bed-yea! My shower was lukewarm/cold, so it was refreshing and quick. We settled in-plugging in all devices, changing to fresh clothes, and putting on sandels.
Dinner at Novo Rumo by the sea was delicious! Pasta Carbonara, mixed salad, hamburger (Charles) and ice cream. My mojito and Charles’ Macallen whisky hit the spot. Now it’s 9:00 pm, we have pre-packed our backpacks, and we are in bed after 41,445 steps! Tomorrow, we plan to do it all again!

      Camino Day 1

      September 29, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we left Porto to start the Camino. We walked along the seaside boardwalk all the way from Matosinhos. Beautiful beach and crashing waves. We stopped on Paraiso at Pe No Mar for lunch and had a lovely meal with great service. Now we are in Labruge (population 3000) before we head on for our hotel tonight in Vila Cha (even smaller population), just up the road.Read more

      Labruge and our first alburgue!

      June 23, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We walked SO much farther than we had anticipated! 17 miles according to my pedometer! Definitely tired, but feeling accomplished! The coast was gorgeous! After Matasinhos it was miles and miles of boardwalk and beach! The sea wind in our face kept us cool on this hot day! So far, very greatful for the items I’ve packed with me! Impressed with the Lush shampoo bar! Going to use my Sea to Summit sleep sack tonight! 👏👏👏Read more

Day 1 - Porto to La Bruge

      June 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Beautiful day! Beautiful weather! The sun was out, but the wind, a steady breeze into your face, kept it comfortable if not cool. A little bit of a late start, but we needed the sleep.

As mentioned, we worked our way back to the Cathedral and then wound our way to the coast going down, down, down, hundreds of steps and narrow streets.

It was really very interesting seeing the city wake-up as we walked north. About two hours in we came across a nice cafe overlooking the Rio Douro and had coffee and breakfast. We missed our breakfast at the hotel because we left too early. I didn’t feel so much like a tourist as I did an observer. It’s easier to do when your only goal is to walk all day. I see a lot more.

As we left the city we started walking on an incredible boardwalk that goes along the coast for miles and miles. It really made for a great walk on wood all day long. Better than sand or rocks. The Portugal coast is beautiful in many areas and the people take advantage of it by how they have structured their life around it.

We stopped for a late lunch - beer and a salmon wrap at a restaurant on the beach. We have begun to meet our fellow Pilgrims and trade the traditional hello of “Bom Camino” each time we see them.

The day finished at La Bruge at my first albergue. We are in an old school house with a room of about a dozen bunk beds. Dinner was on the coast, of course.

Finished the day with over 41,000 steps and 15.9 miles.

Tomorrow an early start for sure!

      Bom Camino!

      Von Porto nach Labruge

      April 27, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Tageskilometer: 29,5km

Day 1 - Porto to Lebruge

      April 9 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

A fantastic start to our Camino! We walked 15 miles along the river and then coastline, much on a boardwalk that goes all the way up Portugal. Impressive! The weather was warm and there was a strong Atlantic wind blowing all the way up. Now, we’re settled into our albergue (hostel) with me on the top bunk. Comfy! I had a bacon omelette with fries for dinner, washed down with a Super Bock, the local beer. Now time to turn in. Another 15 miles awaits tomorrow as we make our way to Rates with some boardwalk, but then saying goodbye to the coast for now. That’s okay, I couldn’t do days on end in the wind!Read more

      Elisabete in Labruge

      May 2, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

I confess. I was smitten with Elisabete, the owner and host of at my pension, the moment I laid eyes on her. Kindness and good cheer are a sort of pheromone for some people. She is one of them. I had been with her less than 15 minutes before I was compelled to hug her, and her hug in return confirmed all.

A former corporate sales executive, she left her job to turn her former, first, home into Smiling Places Guest House, essentially a B &B for pilgrims. She and her husband opened the doors in January of 2020, just in time for Covid.

      Bad luck.

But Elisabete says not so. She, her husband and daughter moved back into the Labruge house to weather the pandemic together. Mornings were spent updating the home. Afternoons at the beach with their daughter. When they did open in April of 2020, the reservations poured in.

Now, she spends her days pouring coffee and wine and collecting stories, and “love.” Any cynicism at the use of that word would evaporate if you were in her company. She clearly adores her job and says owning this place has made her a better human. Camino pilgrims share with her unique tales that are a combination of past tragedy and future dreams. She respects the privilege of her witness to their tales. She relishes it.

I spent my afternoon on the back patio under an umbrella with Elisabete. We shared our stories and others’ stories. We laughed a lot. Hugged a little more. We even cried. She brought me wine and walnuts. She offered some sage advice that was a little difficult to hear. Then she whisked me off for a quick look at the local church and the stubbiest statue of a saint I’ve ever seen. When I left, she walked me to her gate, and we clung to each other like old friends reluctant to part.

So much laughter. I am happy to have had the courage to break the barrier of formality, and to beg a hug from a stranger.

This is what I had hoped for when I planned my Camino - connection with the people who live here. The rule-follower in me was worried the the first stamp in my Camino ‘credentialed’ is not a church, which is the norm. Instead, the first recorded stop on my walk will be a stamp that reminds me of an intimate, silly, sometime moving and inspirational afternoon with a total stranger.

      Hallelujah.

Porto - Labruge (ca. 24,5 km)

      September 7, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      - Don’t look back to often. -

      seine Stimme und halte dich an ihm fest;
denn er ist dein Leben.“ (Dt 30, 20)

      - Take a look on all the signs to find your way, the way Jesus planned for you! -

      Zur Route:
      Porto - Matosinhos - Lavra - Labruge

      I will survive

      June 29, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

My day started at the airport BER in Berlin. It was noisy, the chairs were very uncomfortable, so it was hard to try sleeping.

At 9:40 am I got off the plane at the airport in Porto and first had to go to the cathedral to get a pilgrim's pass. I immediately followed the advice to climb the tower for 3 euros and enjoyed a great all-round view of Porto.

Then I began my pilgrimage along the coast to Labruge. For a donation of 10 euros or more, a friendly hospitalera assigns a bed in the local Albergue.
