      Vila Do Conde to Esposende

      April 11 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

      We left charming Vila do Conde with its flower filled parks, impressive aqueduct, monumental fountains and tiled chapels to walk 17.7 miles to Esposende- a long day! We hiked through the small towns along the coast and had so many people wave to us or honk their horns and call out, “Bom Caminho!” Such friendly people! We were back on the boardwalks again for awhile until we moved a bit inland and hiked still on boardwalks but over the masseiras or garden plots- we saw tons of onions being harvested. In Aqucadoura we passed old windmills and in Estella there was a huge soccer complex and golf course. It was hot so we had a late lunch and lager in a café and rearranged our socks and packs. We finished our day hiking through a eucalyptus forest which was cool and breezy and smelled so good! The flowers were vibrant and beautiful all over the paths today and lemons trees are bursting with fruit. Today on the way we met so many other pilgrims- this warm and pleasant weather is a boon for all of us. We met people today from France, Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai, Norway and even a couple of Okies from Enid! And tonight at supper (which was low key in the albergue dining room) we met Amanda from the Florida Gator Nation! 🧡💙 In Apulia a little lady named Lina (age 90!) stopped us to chat and direct us to the church- she was amazing and sweet to talk to us. So tired from the day and tomorrow will be another long day so I’m headed to sleep and dreaming about our adventures for tomorrow.Read more

      Day 5

      Vila do Conde

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

      A full sized day at 24km.

      We left Matosinhos at 8:30am and did 6km before stopping for breakfast at Cabo do Mundo. It took about 40 minutes to get out of Matosinhos and onto the ocean promenade.

      Most of the rest of the day was walking on wooden boardwalks over the dunes behind the beach with wonderful views of the ocean.

      Towards the end the sand had shifted to cover up the boardwalk so we had to slog through deep sand for a few stretches.

      The weather was sunny and perfectly clear with a cooling breeze, making for excellent walking conditions.

      We had lunch and a foot airing at Vila Chã, in a bar/bakery. Kev ordered a “Cachorro da Padaria” not knowing how big the thing was. With Dave’s help we did it justice.

      Then it was about 8km to Vila do Conde. We passed the very long and wide beach south of town where lots of surfers were enjoying the nice regular swell rolling in.

      We’ve checked in to Hotel Brazão near the centre of town.

      After getting clean and washing clothes we dined on some big prawns cooked in garlic, washed down with the house vinho verde. It was a tiny family run restaurant, Adega do Testas.      Read more

      Vila Do Conde

      Started my walk out of misty, misty Porto this morning.
      Did I bite off more than I could chew? 100%.
      28,5km was a bit much for day 1.
      Did I get lost on my way out of Porto? Also 100% 😅

      75% cobblestones hurt like hell after about 20km, the last 8km were long and hard but I made it ❤️

      I didn't meet a single other pilgrim the entire day!!      Read more

      Day 2–3

      Dag 2: Porto - Vila do Conde

      De eerste echte dag!
      Deze ochtend moest ik nog mijn Camino paspoort ophalen zodat ik mijn stempels kon verzamelen onderweg!
      De enige plek die dat deed op een zondag was de hostel waar ik origineel ging slapen maar daar kon ik pas om 9 u terecht, iets later dan ik wou vertrekken.

      Eens opgehaald kon ik er echt aan beginnen. Een klein beetje vals gespeeld want het allereerste stukje van 5 km deed ik met de metro zodat ik niet op industrieterrein moest lopen.

      En toen begon het echte werk. Mijn vest ging al snel uit en mijn zonnebril al even snel op. Tegen 12 u had ik er de eerste 10 km opzitten en ik voelde me echt top! Dat komt goed, denk ik ;)

      Ik wist wel dat het een race tegen de klok ging zijn want de albergue waar ik wou slapen was op first come, first serve basis en hadden maar 25 plekken.
      Gelukkig kwam ik er net op tijd aan rond 16 uur en had ik een van de laatste bedjes voor mij!

      Al snel geraakte ik aan de praat met 2 Duitsers en een meisje uit Israel en besloten we samen een hapke te eten. ‘Pilgrim menu’ is hier echt een ding en dus kregen we soep, gebakken vis met rijst en een theetje voor 9 euro, iel goe!

      28 km in de beentjes met maar 1 kleine blaar. Da’s best oké 😬

      P.s. ik zou ik niet zijn als ik niet verbrand was. Blijkbaar vond ik het niet nodig om de achterkant van mijn benen en armen in te smeren 🤷🏻‍♀️      Read more

      Reisebericht- Montag Nr 2

      2. Pause

      Kastanietten war cooool. Hab 1 1/2 Stunden trainiert und nur lächeln von Mitmenschen erhalten. Und wenn mich jemand komisch anschaute, sagte ich bonia, bin ich richtig auf dem Weg nach Spanien? Denn nur Kastaniettenspieler dürfen über die Grenze ins Land. Dann haben auch die mich Anstarrer gelacht.

      Nach den Kastanietten hab ich endlich mal wieder den camino getanzt. So wie auf der Loveparade 1992 sch.... egal wer jetzt was denkt, gehört hab ich eh nix, hatte ja meeene Musik aufn Ohren.

      Juhuuuuuuuuuu im nächsten Ort hab ich n asiatischen Laden gefunden die grooooooooße Fanta's verkaufen und siehe da, es gab Regenbogennagellack 🌈 . In Berlin schon längst Mode hier.....🤔 Alle Omis im Café 2. Pause haben mich beobachtet, Kellnerin: ohhhhhhh schön, aber noch ein wenig üben. Gell
      Freu mich schon auf den nächsten Eigentum-Hetenmann,wenn er mich sieht. Unterhalt ich mich dann mit seinem Eigentum und frage sie, kannst du mir das bitte mal erklären, als Frau, wie nagellackieren geht. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Erstmal danke für deine Teilnahme hier. Dein Küsschen somit für heute. Guckst du Omi mit Hund. Sie hat mir mit lackierten Fingernägeln,erlaubt sie und Wuffi zu fotografieren. Weil ich ihr erzählt hab du möchtest eigentlich auch gegens Alleinsein einen kleinen Wuffi .Oder so einen wie auf dem anderen Bild. Es gibt sooooooo viele liebste einsame Herzen im Tierheim. Mutti bitte rette eins. Und einen kleinen wuffi kann man üüüüüüberall mit hinnehmen . Nach Berlin z.b. oder in Urlaub in deutsche Land. Ich denke nach Australien willste doch so oder so nicht. Oder. Rette ein Herz, es wird dir im Tierheim von selbst zulaufen.
      Johanna fährt dich bestimmt hin. Oder? Scheiterts am Geld, ich bezahle dir die Kosten. Als Dank weil du mir das kostbarste geschenkt hast. Das LEBEN. Ich liebe meine beste Mutter von der gaaaaaaaanzen Welt. 😍😍😍😭😭🤪

      Day 1 Porto to Vila do Conde

      September 8, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      I took the metro to Matosinhos, where I met up with Lisa and Carolyn from Portland. The stock advice when beginning the camino (any version), is not to walk too far on your first day. Thank goodness I only planned for a 23km day. You may think it is "just walking." In other words, How hard could it be? As it turns out, pretty hard! I started overheating and needed to slow down. I said goodbye to Lisa and Carolyn, took a rest in the shade and drank lots of water, and felt better fairly quickly. Thankfully their are lots of taps and water fountains along the beaches.

      I stopped for lunch and met Judy from Texas, we walked the rest of the way to Vila do Conde together. Judy will celebrate her 70th birthday in Santiago.
      My Albergue is so cute! There is a lady from Italy in my room who has a manicure with the scallop shell…it matches my pedicure. Also in my room is Alette from the Netherlands. We went for dinner together. We were looking for a steakhouse but it was closed. A local man saw our frustration and walked us to another restaurant, O Mestre, where we had burgers and a much needed drink. It was a great 1st day.      Read more

      Day 2

      Tag 1: 34 km & endlich Vila do Conde!

      Wir sind wirklich verrückt. Beschließen einfach 34 km am ersten Tag zu laufen. Wer macht denn sowas?! 😂
      Rückblickend war es zwar wunderschön und wie haben jetzt schon viele kleine tolle Dinge erlebt, aber die Füße...!! Es ist schlimm... Äußerlich gar nicht mal so übel, aber sie sind einfach nur 2 schmerzende Klumpen. 😂
      Es ist eine Wohltat sie gerade hochzulegen.
      Dabei hätten wir uns wirklich mehr Zeit lassen können, die Küste war einfach herrlich!!!
      Wir sind viel über Sand und Holzstege gelaufen und haben eine Miniflussüberquerung hinter uns. 😂
      Natürlich war die erste Mitpilgerin, die mit uns fast den ganzen Tag gelaufen ist aus München. 😄 Sie ist sehr lieb gewesen, aber unsere Wege haben sich in Labruge getrennt (km 23.5) weil sie lieber dort schon einkehren wollte. Hätten wir das mal lieber auch gemacht. 😄 Aber nein, wir hatten ja schon 10km weiter etwas reserviert. Leider ist es auf diesem Camino wirklich so, dass man nicht spontan irgendwo einkehren kann. Alles ist immer schon voll. Und weil alle reservieren, muss man leider auch reservieren um dann nicht zum nächsten Ort gehen (wo wahrscheinlich auch wieder alles voll ist) oder draußen schlafen zu müssen. Ich finde das echt schade, es nimmt einen schon ein Stück Freiheit wenn man (so wie wir heute) zu einem bestimmten Ziel auf Teufel komm raus gehen muss. Ich kenne das von meinem letzten Camino auch viel spontaner. Naja, egal wir sind ja Gott sei Dank noch (selbstverständlich im Dunkeln nachdem wir den Sonnenuntergang geschaut haben😄) angekommen. Wir waren übrigens die letzten und niemand in unserem Hostel hat die Strecke an einem Tag gemacht, alle haben sich 2 Tage Zeit gelassen. Wir sind echt verrückt...
      Im Hostel waren die Leute aber sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit, was uns auch wieder Kraft gegeben hat.
      Übrigens gab es heute den ganzen Tag über das magische Phänomen der "Unmöglichkeit sich zu velaufen". Jedes Mal wenn wir (wirklich nur!) 1 Sekunde stehen blieben um nochmal nachzuschauen wo es lang geht kam ein Portugiese oder eine Portugiesin und haben uns direkt!!! In die richtige Richtung geschickt. So schnell kann man weder auf das Handy schauen noch den Reiseführer rauskramen. Das ist so ein tolles und merkwürdiges Phänomen und ich hatte das genauso schon beim letzten Camino erlebt. Ich hoffe es bleibt so! 😄
      Das lustigste Ergebnis war heute auf jeden Fall der Fisch.
      In der ersten größeren Stadt auf unserem Weg Matosinhos wollten wir den dort sehr guten, frisch gegrillten Fisch probieren. Wir haben dann alle 3 irgendwie ausversehen eine Portion für 2 Personen gekauft und es war wirklich mit der größte und leckerste Lachs den wir jemals gegessen hatten. 😍 Das Problem war nur, dass wir kein Besteck dazubekommen oder dabei hatten.... 😅 Wir mussten also diesen mega Lachs, die Pommes und den Kohlsalat als Beilage komplett mit den Händen essen. 😂 Das war wirklich wild.... Wir sind aber extra wieder zum Strand zurückgegangen und haben uns ein ruhiges Eckchen gesucht um diesen Anblick niemandem zumuten zu müssen. 😄 Naja, so ist es eben manchmal beim pilgern....

      Finding Our Way

      Visiting beautiful churches and discovering cultural heritage sites all while following the shell and yellow arrows kept us busy again today as we hiked over 16 miles. (The legs are definitely tired today! ) Hard rain and winds whipped us up the coast all morning but by this afternoon as we veered a bit from the coast, the weather calmed down and we were treated to a few sunny afternoon hours in the masseiras or local garden plots and a eucalyptus forest. We passed big soccer training field and a golf course in the middle of what seemed like nowhere! The rain welcomed us again as we were approaching our hostel in Esposende but by this point we expected it , popped the ponchos back on and kept walking!!
      Today we visited and were awed by many beautiful old churches. We were reminded of the reverence given to our God in olden times by the faithful Portuguese who in this area made their living from the sea. We were waved at and encouraged all day- some people even stopped their cars when they passed us in the rain to give us their best wishes- it is humbling to be the recipient of such kindness.
      We passed some of our new friends as we walked including Brent from San Diego, Nicola, Fergus and Lewis from Australia and Theodore from Germany who is escorting 20 rambunctious high schoolers- they kept our spirits up and today was another good day- now to sleep and get ready for the next stage!       Day 2 Vila do Conde to Aguçadoura

      Short walking day today, only 10km. There was a terrific thunder storm last night, thankfully it did not continue this morning. Walked by myself today, listening to my book, “An Echo in the Bone”, on Audible. I have a bit of heat rash around my ankles and a few blisters from walking to dinner in my Crocs 🤦🏼‍♀️. A Portuguese lady in the Albergue said the locals call the rash “street rash” as it’s from walking on hot pavement. She gave me recommendations for cream that I could get from the pharmacy.
      I went to the “Farmácia” in Aguçadoura but the pharmacist said not to waste my money. Keep it covered and it will go away. He did give me a stamp in my credential and a souvenir bar of soap. 😆
      My Albergue today is just steps from the ocean! I tried to go in the water but it was too rough to go in past my knees.      Read more

      Challenging day

      June 28, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

      Today was challenging but I (re) learned some import l lessons-
      1. Let fellow pilgrims help you. Charles helped me adjust my backpack which greatly reduced my hip and lower back pain. By mid day, I had learned to lean away from the sea wind and use my poles for physical support.
      2. Acknowledge the talents and skills of others. Because I was struggling, I encouraged Charles to walk in front to set the pace. He kept us going at 2.7 mph along the coast and when we turned toward the Central route, he kept us safe on tiny, busy country roads. I was truly thankful for his leadership.
      3. Trust in God. Using the Brierley guidebook, Apple Maps, and Google maps, we safely negotiated the unmarked route from Vila do Condo to Sao Pedro de Rates. Amid cornfields and farms, we saw no yellow arrows anywhere. It felt like we were creating this path. With Charles’ guidance, I knew God was walking with us.
      4. Grace is in abundance on the Camino. Today was marked by joyful grace. We enjoyed a respite in an empty courtyard, arriving for lunch at closing time. The lady at Cafe Barbosa graciously fed and watered two tired pilgrims plus we used her bathroom.
      5. Love, kindness, and history. Now we are in Albergue Sao Pedro do Rates, the oldest albergue in Portugal. The pilgrims are from Germany, Canada, France, DC, London-so friendly and fun. The hospitelero was gracious and helpful.

      Charles has some foot issues, so I reminded him that we can take a day off. He’s not ready for that, but we’ll play it be ear.
