      Vila Praia do Âncora

      April 19 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A 20km day, much of it near the beach. Our last day hugging the coast.

After a good buffet breakfast at our hotel, AP Dona Aninhas, it was a 20 minute walk across town to the beach to the north.

8km further was a coffee stop right off the beachside path.

The track left the beach and climbed a headland at one point.

After a dire (forgivable) navigation error by Kevin, incurring an unpleasant 2km trudge along a highway we found a lunch spot, Camarão, within sight of our goal, Vila Praia do Ancora.

A couple of km later we were checking into Hotel Meira. Looks good.

      Loooong day today…

      September 30, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Anha to Carraco to the beach to the Costa Path to Ancora and then a roundabout walk to my little rental 😮‍💨 😅 Met really fun pilgrims today but spent many hours walking alone. I walked through fairy forests and winding neighborhoods, I climbed many stone stairs, and I’m ready for dinner!Read more

Viana do Castelo to Praia de Ancora
Another gorgeous walk. Aside from the cow in my hotel room, the town of Viana de Castelo was really nice. Big enough where there would be things to do and had a very “old” feel to it.
I have walked on every surface imaginable- sand, cobblestone, (LOTS of cobblestone), dirt paths, rock. Thank the Lord my feet are happy in my Hoka Speedgoat 5’s and my injinji toe sock liners!
Walked awhile with many people today. Almural from South Africa who is currently living and working as a nurse in Dublin because of the economic hardship in her own country. She is walking and grieving the loss of her brother. Mary- a young educational psychologist from the UK- I think she had been crying when I happened on her. Just stayed with her a bit, then let her continue to work through what she needed to. I walked with Martin- also from the UK, who openly shared his take on their political situation, “They traded in one stupid Prime Minister for an even stupider one!”. A couple of Scottish ladies who MUST have been older than me, (although I’m not quite sure since my recent designation as an “elderly lady”.) They had done all 800 kilometers of the French Camino last year. I’m thinking they must have been 75 or so. And then Ernest, who was driving a tractor pulling a wagon full of hay and stopped at the gate to his pasture, got off his tractor, and shouted “Bom Caminho!” He was an amputee, hobbling around on one crutch-(sort of reminded me of my old friend Bob), but he showed me his cows,(vacas) and communicated to me that there was a bar that was open 3 km down the road. (Nothing is open on Sundays, so this was valuable info!)
And then a lot of walking just by myself, which is also pure joy.
I’m getting into the rhythm of the day. It’s such a simple beat. Wake up. Eat (COFFEE!!!), walk.
Tomorrow will mess me up- a short day. Not sure why it booked out that way, but as it is supposed to rain all day, it’s probably a good thing. It will also be my last night in Portugal before crossing over into Spain. My last chance to eat those scrumptious Pastel de Natas, (I think I called them the wrong thing earlier- buen natales, which I’m pretty sure means Merry Christmas in Italian 🙄, soI am now correcting myself!). Also, I talked earlier about that sandwich called the Francosinho. I went to dinner and tried to order it even though it did not sound good to me, but I was gonna take one for the team. The server, who spoke no English looked at me for a long time and then pointed at the burger. I said, “Yeah! That sounds good!”
All Joni Mitchell playlist today. Favorite verse from my reading of James: 2:12 “Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgement.”

Vila Praia de Ancora to Moledo

      September 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It took me about 30 minutes to find the Camino route again, the albergue was that far away. Easy though, I just had to head towards the ocean. And once I found a church, I had found the Camino.

I had a great walk today, partly along the ocean on wide paved trails with separate bike lanes, partly on city roads/sidewalks, not too much cobblestone.

There were goats on the trail, right by the beach! I stopped in Moledo for café.

Day 6 Vila Praia de Ancora to Caminha

      September 13, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

My last day in Portugal! I left the Albergue at 7:00 am and walked to Caminha on my own, bouncing back and forth between the coastal and the Litoral routes. Stopped for breakfast at a supermercado - fruit and yogurt. I saved a horse from being tangled up in his leash and met up with Teresa again at the water taxi.
      See part 2 for Spain!

Tag 4: Mittelalter, Esel und Hape

      September 9, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

So lieb einfach!!! ❤️❤️❤️

      Camino Portuguese Day 6

      September 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

A few scenes from the albergue and from where I ate yesterday evening. It was definitely a Mom and Pop restaurant, traditional Portuguese food. Up on a hill, with a great view for sunset nearby.

The fellow in the photo is the owner/waiter and his wife was busy in the kitchen. He was an interesting fellow, set the tables just so, and brought out pots of raw food to show what’s on the menu. He obviously takes pride in his restaurant. The food was delicious. The drink is champarriao, made with wine, beer, sugar and cinnamon. Very tasty.

The cat joined me after dinner.

      An Episode of "Lost"!

      June 6, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Well, we unintentionally cleared over 28km today, and have the aches and pains to prove it! And maybe 1 tiny blister. I dunno, my feet are a bit of a train wreck. Hikers rash, heat rash, sunburned ankles. I have the picture to remind myself, but no fear, I won't subject anyone to that.

Started so well, we crossed the Limia River via the Ponte Eiffel - yes, that Eiffel - to enter Viana do Castelo, prettiest town so far. We met Isabella and Albert from San Francisco, and together we found our yellow arrows again. The Camino really does provide. Albert is 78, hiking his first Camino. Inspirational, although Isabella also shared their daughter really didn't understand why they were doing this😅. Our paces are a bit different, so we moved ahead

And endless twisting up and down through narrow cobbled lanes ensued. I love a good authentic cobblestone look, but the cafe that finally appeared many km later was a far more appreciated sight by then! Refreshed with handfuls of cherries and a cold beer each, away we went.

So trusting, so much faith in our various yellow arrows..they come painted on rocks, on the walls, sometimes in tile, sometimes spray painted right on the road. But we started to become aware that there 8 or 9 km we had left to go should be almost done. The phone map shows 6.8km. strange, we've been hiking for hours, in the hot sun, getting tired. Sigh, we carry on, over rock trails, alleys, dirt paths, more up than down. Still, 6.8 left! Checking the map, we realize - oh no, we've gone off grid! I do not like this at all! What if we overshot our days destination? What if it's crazy far away?

We make the call to head down to the highway ( N13 is suddenly my friend now). At about 2 hours behind schedule, it's the best choice. Not the prettiest walk, but it gets us to Quinta da Quinhas. A working farm, coworking, coliving, hostel. The motto here is Hygge, and that's immediately apparent.

We gather just enough energy to go find dinner. One restaurant in town makes that easy, and it's only 350 metres away. Up stairs😞. The food was great though, home cooked by an elderly couple who have clearly run the place for years. While the wife cooks, husband carefully, precisely, places a paper tablecloth on our table. Such care, attention to detail. Bodes well for the food. Which is delicious, and I'm sure it would have been no matter what, given the days exertions. However, we had no idea what we ordered! Sometimes, you just have to take a chance, and it pays off😅

PS, we have a donkey here. He is so cute!

Also, tomorrow will be way,way shorter!
