Day 6 - Carreço to Caminha

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today, as in the last few days, we’ve chosen to take the main coastal route rather than the coastal literal route to start the day. This put us much more up on the mountain, which is a lot more work because it’s a lot more climbing. But the rewards were amazing because the views were incredible. We were up in the trees and the eucalyptus forests were cool and the trails were beautiful taking us down paths with ancient walls and over old stone bridges. We took the road less traveled and were better for it.

After about 6 miles we joined back with the literal route and was treated to perfect coastal weather, no crowds and a path that was perfectly flat (something very different than climbing in the hills this morning). The path took us into Caminha where we are staying tonight. It is a wonderful village for our last day in Portugal, you can feel its age and character everywhere you turn. We had a fun walk through the open market and then spent the afternoon in the square drinking beer, sipping coffees and enjoying the Portuguese pastries for the last time. Well, maybe we will have one more chance in the morning for breakfast pastries. 😉

Tomorrow we take a boat across the river to Spain. Spain has a lot to live up to. 🇵🇹 ❤️

      Castelo da Neiva

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A 16km day nearly all inland, hot sun and some cobblestones, and one small climb.

We had breakfast at our hostel, The Spot Ofir, and then an hour’s walk along the river Cávado.

Setting out at 9:30 and had a few foot rest stops. We detoured along the beach as much as was possible, maybe 3km.

Lunch at the 9km mark in Belinho was a “tosta mista” and a Coke at a bakery.

Another 6 circuitous kms led us to where Google maps said our place was but it was not marked and took some finding behind a large unmarked locked gate. At the 3pm check-in time I phoned the owner and he provided a combination to get us in.

The place is quite a nice apartment with a balcony overlooking a lush garden.

The fridge has breakfast supplies too and we can make coffee.

A short day but not as easy as expected. Great to have space to spread out in tonight.

After cleaning up and a rest we dined at Restaurante Encosta do Monte, 500 up the hill, on the recommendation of the owner. Good grub, good value.

      Albergue Casa do Sardão

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Sometimes you come across an Albergue that is too good to be true. We thought we found that last night at Casa do Carolina but tonight’s stay at Casa do Sardão is over the top and for the first time has required its own post. It is owned and operated by two guys; Hugo is local and Alex is from South Africa. The place they are running is the most serene place we have ever stayed. I asked Hugo for a job. I think he thought I was kidding but I don’t think I was. We may have found Heaven on Earth or at least Heaven in Portugal 🇵🇹Read more

      Fão

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Another full size day at 22km, near perfect weather and flat.
A wholesome brekkie at our hotel then on the path at 8.00am. Planned a break for coffee around 7km but nothing open until after 8km, then coffee but no snack. Carried on past multiple market gardens and greenhouses to Apulia, was pretty warm and cobblestone roads were tough on feet. A basic late lunch and on to Fao via rustic farm lanes. Revised plan for a few days time, we’re going well. Our Fao boarding house has a pool, looks enticing.Read more

      Porto/Barcelos

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Wonderful morning in Porto. Delicious brunch at the Majestic and then some shopping. We then took the train to Barcelos (1 hour ride) to meet our guides, Piero and Miguel. Had a delicious mango smoothie on the platform. We checked into our hotel, had some down time, a team meeting and then a guide, Hugo, gave us a walking city tour. We then had a terrific dinner in the restaurant next to the hotel. Salad, Roast chicken, cabbage, and an amazing dessert (so many choices and I chose well - petite chocolate cake piece with ice cream. Now to bed. We start our first day of walking tmrw. Love traveling with these terrific friends.Read more

      Camping Lisboa

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Vila do Conde

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

A full sized day at 24km.

We left Matosinhos at 8:30am and did 6km before stopping for breakfast at Cabo do Mundo. It took about 40 minutes to get out of Matosinhos and onto the ocean promenade.

Most of the rest of the day was walking on wooden boardwalks over the dunes behind the beach with wonderful views of the ocean.

Towards the end the sand had shifted to cover up the boardwalk so we had to slog through deep sand for a few stretches.

The weather was sunny and perfectly clear with a cooling breeze, making for excellent walking conditions.

We had lunch and a foot airing at Vila Chã, in a bar/bakery. Kev ordered a “Cachorro da Padaria” not knowing how big the thing was. With Dave’s help we did it justice.

Then it was about 8km to Vila do Conde. We passed the very long and wide beach south of town where lots of surfers were enjoying the nice regular swell rolling in.

We’ve checked in to Hotel Brazão near the centre of town.

After getting clean and washing clothes we dined on some big prawns cooked in garlic, washed down with the house vinho verde. It was a tiny family run restaurant, Adega do Testas.

Day 4 - Esposende to Anha

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We covered 13 miles of a very different walk today. Moving inland from the beach a couple of miles put us in a different world. It changed from boardwalks on the beach to mountain trails and quiet villages. The path was very much like walking the Galicia region of the Camino Frances. It was cool with a light wind and wonderful smells of the forest.

A highlight was crossing a river on a simple bridge in the middle of nowhere, it was a beautiful spot that felt right.

Once we came out of the forest we had a nice stroll by some churches and then a stop for a “Pilgrims Meal” at a small bar. Then to our Albergue (hostel) to recharge, wash clothes and prepare for tomorrow. Another amazing day!

      Impressionen aus Lissabon 1

      April 14 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Day 3 - Póvoa de Varzim to Esposende

      April 14 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Day 3 on the Camino and the skies continue to be blue and the temperature warm. The same is forecasted for at least the next 10 days. This area has had so much rain previously that we were very nervous for our planned time here but we have been very lucky weather wise, so far.

Today being Sunday, there were loads of families out walking and enjoying the beaches. We left later than we normally like because I (Peg) couldn’t pass up the free breakfast, that came with our room last night, but it wasn’t served until 8am. We arrived at our Albergue about 3:00 with many stops along the way to refuel our bodies and rest our weary bones. Tomorrow we have further distance to cover so will be leaving earlier.

As they say in Portugal, Bom Caminha!
