      Day three walking

      April 18 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Honestly do not know what town we are in, but it is in Portugal. Today was a long one. We started walking at 9 and did not get to hotel till close to 5. 14 miles I think and three were uphill and treacherous. But we did it!!! My Apple Watch said I did 45 flights of stairs. I did not feel bad eating an ice cream bar before the last three miles. Staying at a farmhouse type of inn. I’m utterly exhausted. Went in the pool and hot tub post shower and could barely get out of bed for our meeting and dinner. Tomorrow is a new day. I’m enjoying my Spotify playlists and listening to the new Anne Lamott book. I cannot do all silence all day as my head is not a great neighborhood and I also can’t talk to people all day so the audio books, music and podcasts are great. I was happy to listen to Agne from Brisbane on Sobercast this morning. Missing my morning time with my anonymous friends. I’m a routine gal and while I’m loving being off social, email and text it’s been nice to check-in with some of my support from back home on what’s app. I could never do the entire Camino and stay at the Auberges. I’d lose my mind. God bless those people, but my self care, need for my routine, downtime, sleep hygiene, daily meetings, my gym, etc. are my keys to the healthy life I lead today of balance. Night night!Read more

      Viana do Castelo

      April 18 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

About 16k today and mostly off piste.

We left our apartment about 9:30 after a continental brekkie and decided to follow the beach to our next stop, rather than the more inland official route.

This required a bit of bush bashing early on to get into Amorosa for coffee but was far more scenic.

We walked the last half along the packed sand just beyond the waves, including removing boots and socks to cross a stream. Water was very nice. Lunch of fillet fish. Then an inland detour on the south bank of the river Lima to cross the bridge into the town of Viana. A comparatively snazzy hotel. David had swim and sauna downstairs.

Good dinner nearby of grilled squid and salad.

      Surfing in Ericeira

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Read more

      Ponte de Lima

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Another glorious day. I lead our morning devotional and prayer time which I got to do on the patio overlooking the mountains. God is so good. Another perfect blue sky, fields of calla lily’s , trumpet lily’s, wisteria, honeysuckle— all in major bloom
as they just had a lot of rain before we came. We spend the first hour in silence. I spent the first two in silence praying over my prayer list. So many to pray for. Also had a praise music sing along and little Broadway walk/sing by myself. I love walking by myself in the sun through the beautiful scenery listening to my favorite broadway tunes and singing out loud. Pure joy. 12.5 miles today. Tomorrow will be our most difficult day. 15 miles and a lot uphill. Listening to the new Anne Lamott book which I’m savoring. Love this crew. Night night.

      Camping Orbitur Valado

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

"You Tube" Videos gibt's davon ohne Ende.

Day 6 - Carreço to Caminha

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today, as in the last few days, we’ve chosen to take the main coastal route rather than the coastal literal route to start the day. This put us much more up on the mountain, which is a lot more work because it’s a lot more climbing. But the rewards were amazing because the views were incredible. We were up in the trees and the eucalyptus forests were cool and the trails were beautiful taking us down paths with ancient walls and over old stone bridges. We took the road less traveled and were better for it.

After about 6 miles we joined back with the literal route and was treated to perfect coastal weather, no crowds and a path that was perfectly flat (something very different than climbing in the hills this morning). The path took us into Caminha where we are staying tonight. It is a wonderful village for our last day in Portugal, you can feel its age and character everywhere you turn. We had a fun walk through the open market and then spent the afternoon in the square drinking beer, sipping coffees and enjoying the Portuguese pastries for the last time. Well, maybe we will have one more chance in the morning for breakfast pastries. 😉

Tomorrow we take a boat across the river to Spain. Spain has a lot to live up to. 🇵🇹 ❤️

      Castelo da Neiva

      April 17 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A 16km day nearly all inland, hot sun and some cobblestones, and one small climb.

We had breakfast at our hostel, The Spot Ofir, and then an hour’s walk along the river Cávado.

Setting out at 9:30 and had a few foot rest stops. We detoured along the beach as much as was possible, maybe 3km.

Lunch at the 9km mark in Belinho was a “tosta mista” and a Coke at a bakery.

Another 6 circuitous kms led us to where Google maps said our place was but it was not marked and took some finding behind a large unmarked locked gate. At the 3pm check-in time I phoned the owner and he provided a combination to get us in.

The place is quite a nice apartment with a balcony overlooking a lush garden.

The fridge has breakfast supplies too and we can make coffee.

A short day but not as easy as expected. Great to have space to spread out in tonight.

After cleaning up and a rest we dined at Restaurante Encosta do Monte, 500 up the hill, on the recommendation of the owner. Good grub, good value.

      Chillaxing in Caldas

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

      13.1k👣23Z 2❤️

Fish shop for tuna fillets. Tim went home with the fish; we went on to Crystal & Marcio's.
Bible study at Crystal's with tea and pineapple.
Plaça das Frutas for veggies and bread (try as we might, we could not get Sra Pão to shift over to the brown breads! But the so-called sandwich rolls were delicious. AND she threw in a fourth for free!)
Lunch at home with Tim. Tomato & sardine open-faced sandwiches. Yum.
      Did laundry and chilled.
Hung laundry to dry in the breeze from the veranda, then a nap.
Cider and bites with the expat group. Met Peggy and Sonu from the Bronx.
Home for sautéed tuna filets with broccoli and curried turnips.

      Albergue Casa do Sardão

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Sometimes you come across an Albergue that is too good to be true. We thought we found that last night at Casa do Carolina but tonight’s stay at Casa do Sardão is over the top and for the first time has required its own post. It is owned and operated by two guys; Hugo is local and Alex is from South Africa. The place they are running is the most serene place we have ever stayed. I asked Hugo for a job. I think he thought I was kidding but I don’t think I was. We may have found Heaven on Earth or at least Heaven in Portugal 🇵🇹Read more

      Fão

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Another full size day at 22km, near perfect weather and flat.
A wholesome brekkie at our hotel then on the path at 8.00am. Planned a break for coffee around 7km but nothing open until after 8km, then coffee but no snack. Carried on past multiple market gardens and greenhouses to Apulia, was pretty warm and cobblestone roads were tough on feet. A basic late lunch and on to Fao via rustic farm lanes. Revised plan for a few days time, we’re going well. Our Fao boarding house has a pool, looks enticing.Read more
