      San Juan, Puerto Rico

      April 28, 2015 in Puerto Rico ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

A great city to end our round the world tour. Beautiful but hot weather and a very clean and welcoming city. We were the last cruise ship in for a while but during the season they have up to 8 at a time with some as big as 8000? passengers. That sound huge compared to our little boat with 380. Some of the shops didn't even open today for such a small boat but we were through touring and back on the boat early just because we were exhausted.Read more

      San Juan Puerto Rico

      November 15, 2013 in Puerto Rico ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Arrived in San Juan, at about 5.30am and we all had to clear US immigration before we could go ashore, that's 3600 passengers and 1500 crew.
I must say that for Sheila and I it went quite smoothly, we were done and dusted in about 30 minutes, which for Homeland Security was quite good.
The really good thing about it is that we don't have to clear immigration at Ft Lauderdale, just customs.
Maz, Sue, Eva and Jim, were jumping a taxi to a shopping mall they knew, so not wanting to shop Sheila and I went for a stroll around the town in search of some wifi.
We tried Burger King but connection was rubbish, so we walked down by the fort and found an ice cream parlour which have not only brilliant wifi but brilliant ice cream, well frozen yogurt actually.
Sheila managed to phone the kids using Viber, and I checked some emails.
We then strolled back to the ship passing the market and lovely sidewalk cafés,
I like San Juan, it's one of my favourite ports of call.
Even though we didn't do much this time, there is lots to see.
One thing I usually do when here is walk to the cemetery at the top of the town, it's a beautiful and interesting place, with spectacular sea views.

    • Day 10

      Old San Juan Puerto Rico

      November 13, 2014 in Puerto Rico ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Don't know why I've put that title because I didn't get off, it was so hot I decided to give it a miss.
But it is one of my favourite stops, we normally go to a little ice cream parlour for the free Wi-Fi as it's usually very quiet, not like Starbucks, or Burger King, which get so crowded.
But sadly Shaun, who did get off told me that it's closed down, which is a real shame.
On a different note, the early morning chats in the diamond lounge are as popular as ever, every cruise I go on ends up with great early morning chats, the where about eight or ten of us yesterday.
The topics of conversation vary so much it's unbelievable, and it's always with nice people.
As I've said many times before, it's all about meeting people on these cruises.
This one is no different, I've met some old friends and made some new ones.

      Docked in Old San Juan

      January 24, 2014 in Puerto Rico ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After all the speculation about where we will dock, and my thinking we where in a different part of town, we are docked in the usual place, it just looked different last night when it was dark.
The US CDC (center for disease control) team is on board and are inspecting the ship to ascertain if sanitizing is required.
I'm guessing that It can't be as bad as first suspected as they were letting people off the ship last night and continue to do so today.
So we'll probably get off later and get a coffee and some free WiFi.
Sheila should be released from her isolation this morning as it will be 24 hours since she had any symptoms.
Not sure if she will fancy going out though, as she was still a bit weak last night.

      Cruise Cancelled !!

      January 25, 2014 in Puerto Rico ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Well this is a first for me, the CDC have cancelled the rest of the cruise, and we are now not going to St Maarten, we are heading straight back to Bayonne, New Jersey, for sanitizing.
There will be compensation etc, but we've not yet been told what it will be.
Also we're not sure what's going to happen to us back to backers, we don't know if we'll be doing the second cruise or if that's being cancelled also.
No doubt we'll find out today.
      I will keep you informed.

P.S. Just watching CNN and a report came on about the sickness on the ship.
According to the report there are more than 300 people sick that is 280 guests and over 20 staff.

      Free at last

      January 27, 2014 in Puerto Rico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Sheila was finally let out of her quarantine in the cabin, woo hoo!
We had docked in the usual berth in Old San Juan, so as Maz, Jim & the girls had gone to a shopping mall for some retail therapy, we decided on a stroll in to town.
We headed for an ice cream parlour we had found last time we were here.
It sells beautiful frozen yogurt and most importantly has free WiFi, not only free but it has a good strong signal and is quiet.
Unlike the popular places like Starbucks and Burger king where you struggle with low bandwidth and hoards of people.
Oh yes,I almost forgot. A follow on from an earlier post.
The concierge pulled me aside yesterday and apologized for his attitude the other night when he told me off for being loud during the penalty shoot-out in the Manchester United semi final. I accepted his apology, but I feel it was made more because he doesn't want to lose any tips from our group, which is usually 8 or 10 people four of which are pinnacle members. I'll just see how it goes over this and the next cruise.

      San Juan, Puerto Rico

      May 9, 2014 in Puerto Rico ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

The captain has informed us that we'd be about an hour late getting into San Juan, Puerto Rico, as one of our propellers has developed a fault so we are limping along on 2 out of the three engines.
He said that the company were flying out someone to repair it.
Must be a sort of RAC for ships lol.
We got off in Puerto Rico and went to our little ice-cream parlour for an ice-cream and some free internet.
Sheila and I found it a couple of years back, and it's brill, the internet is quick and the place is always nice and quiet.
Everyone else off the ship heads for, Starbucks, Burger King, etc for the internet.
So those places are packed and the connection is generally maxed out.
The little ice-cream parlour is perfect and it's only two minutes further on. ( but shush, keep that to ourselves, lol)
No show in the theatre last night, so nothing to report on the entertainment front.
After the surprising Crystal Palace vs Liverpool result we are all waiting for tonight's Man City result.
We'll Maz and I are waiting for it, because to be honest Sheila is feeling ill and a bit suicidal over Liverpool slipping up in the title race.
But this had definitely been the best run in for years, it's all going right down to the wire.
If I'm honest Liverpool do deserve to win the title this season, not because of all the sentimentality over Hilsborough, but because of the football they've played all season.
Although I would normally not want the "red shite" to win the title, this season and because of the anniversary of Hilsborough.
I wouldn't be too sad if they did. ( there I've said it, but please don't ask me to repeat it. Lol )
