      Christmas in Puerto Rico

      A scheduled 3:00p departure from San Juan, Puerto Rico gives the impression of a short day in port. But it’s not. Not when the ship arrives at 7:00a. After clocking 14,769 steps, however, the hot, humid, sunny, 83F day has worn us out, so we’re back on board Insignia now at 1:00p. Not bad for being out since 8:00a.

      When we first set out, the streets were deserted … Christmas Day after all. It was a nice change from the usual hectic pace of this lively city. That changed by the time we made our way to Viejo San Juan three hours later. Here the streets were crowded with passengers from Insignia and NCL Dawn … the two ships calling on the city today.

      We’ve been to San Juan a couple of times before. In fact, our very first Caribbean cruise (in 2002 on Celebrity Infinity) was a round-trip itinerary out of here. So, from where Insignia docked today at one of the piers near Viejo San Juan, we hung a right instead of going left, exploring new to us parts of the city before looping around to Viejo San Juan for gelato from La Mamma (yummy!) and a stroll back to Insignia.

      San Juan

      Ostatni dzień na Vieques.Tak naprawdę to już tylko logistyczne działania nie dające za dużo przyjemności. Pakowanie, jedzenie na drogę, sprzątanie,oddanie samochodu itd.
      Sprawdziliśmy jeszcze tylko małą plaże koło domu, ale była dość zaniedbana.
      Ferry w bardzo łagodny sposób zaniosła nas do Ceiba, a stamtąd Henry zabrał nas do starego miasta San Juan.
      Urokliwe miejsce zbudowane przez Hiszpanów w tysiąc sześćsetnym którymś po splądrowaniu miasta przez Duńczyków.
      Chodząc jego ulicami można łatwo przenieść się do tamtych czasów, a jeśli nie w czasie, to przynajmniej do miast europejskich, które powstały w podobnym okresie.
      Odwiedziliśmy miejsce gdzie narodziła się Pina colada - bar Barachina oczywiście próbując tego napoju, następnie nasze ulubione miejsce na mojito bar Marlin Place,
      potem włóczyliśmy się uliczkami odwiedzając fort, patrząc z daleka na groźna dzielnicę La Perla i skończyliśmy dzień w La Factoria przy drinkach i tańcach.
      Również odwiedziliśmy dość specyficzny, ale pamiątkowy dla nas, bo byliśmy tu razem z dziećmi 10 lat temu, bar El Batey, pełen różnorakich graffiti.      Read more

      Schnorcheln mit Kröten 🌊🐢

      Highlights vom Mittwoch:

      Gegen Mittag fuhren wir Richtung San Juan um einen kleinen städtischen Strand zu erkunden. Justine konnte mit etwas Recherche im Internet den Strand Escarbrom entdecken.

      Der Strand ist komplett abgeschirmt vom Meer und lässt somit kaum Wellen hinein. Dies nutzt auch die grüne Meeresschildkröte um in Ruhe am Grund das Seegras zu fressen und alle paar Minuten an der Oberfläche etwas Luft zu schnappen. Wir haben sie dabei begleitet und den Moment auch glücklicherweise festhalten können. Schildkröten zählen zu den ältesten Lebewesen auf der Erde, seit mehr als 200 Millionen Jahren sind sie auf dem Planeten. leider werden Meeresschildkröte von der Weltnaturschutzunion als vom Aussterben bedroht eingestuft. vor allem durch Beifang in der Fischerei und den Plastikmüll in den Meeren, da viele Meeresschildkröten diesen müll fressen, weil sie denken es seien Quallen.

      Am frühen Nachmittag sind wir dann nur wenige 100 Meter weiter durch Old San Juan geschlendert. Dieser Stadtteil war typisch kolonial und karibisch gestaltet. Zusätzlich war alles in bunte LED gehüllt, da die weihnachtlichen Vorbereitungen auch hier bei 30 ºC in vollem Gange sind. Direkt an der Küste befindet sich hier auch eine rießige Festungsanlage.       Achja, so schnell gehen 3 Wochen Urlaub vorbei 🥺
      Morgen um diese Zeit sitzen wir in 2 unterschiedlichen fliegenden Autobussen über dem großen Teich (hoffentlich, wenn’s das Wetter zulässt, wenn nit, a Wurscht). Es gibt noch paar Eindrücke von den letzten Tagen, wir haben viel erlebt und es hat sich auf jeden Fall rentiert!!

      Bye Bye SJ

      Since we arrived in San Juan rather early — well before sunrise — the sail-in scenery was cloaked in darkness. So we went down to deck 5 starboard for the sail out since our veranda was not only getting the brunt of the hot sun, but it was also on the wrong side of the ship.

      Imagine our surprise when we saw, as we pulled out of our berth, that in the interim since our return to Insignia, NCL Dawn had been joined by two more big ships … one from RCL and another one from Celebrity. Definitely time to get out of dodge.

      Tomorrow is the last port of call of this cruise … and one we have not visited before.      Read more

      San Juan hat eine wundervolle Altstadt, die auch Weltkulturerbe ist! Viele bunte Häuser prägen das Stadtbild.
      Sie hat allerdings den gleichen Nachteil wie mein VfL: anständiges Auf und Ab!
      Man merkt auch, dass Weihnachten vor der Tür steht 😲
      Allerdings ist es bei deutlich über 30 Grad wieder drückend schwül und ich merke wie ich immer mehr auf dem Zahnfleisch laufe.
      Als ich beim zweiten Castillo San Christóbal ankomme und sehe wie hoch ich da muss, streike ich und klebe mich aus Protest auf der Straße fest - SCHERZ 😄😄
      Ich gehe noch bis zum "Walkway of the Presidents" unterhalb des Capitols. Hier stehen die Bronzefiguren aller amerikanischen Präsidenten die jemals Puerto Rico besucht haben. Der letzte war wohl Obama!
      Abschließend schleiche ich zurück zum Schiff, wo ich nach gut 8 km in reichlich 5 Stunden ankomme.

      Für unseren letzten Tag auf der Insel mieteten wir uns relativ spontan ein Auto, da wir in den Regenwald nach El Yunque zum Wandern fahren wollten. Dort verbrachten wir den ganzen Vormittag. Wir kletterten bis auf einen Berg hinauf wo wir eine wunderschöne Aussicht genießen konnten (siehe Bild). Von dort aus fuhren wir an der Küste entlang zurück in die Stadt, wo wir den letzten Coffe Stop unserer Reise einlegten. Heute Nacht geht es dann zurück in die Staaten, allerdings zunächst nach Tampa wo wir noch einen Tag eine Freundin besuchen bevor wir zurück nach Charlotte fliegen.Read more

      Christo ha resucitado

      Unfortunately, Emmit didn’t feel so great and had a quiet day in the hotel room. The rest of us good… so far.

      The day started with Easter Sunday Mass (in Spanish) at Catedral de San Juan Batista (built in 1511). Resucitado!

      It was a perfect day at the beach though we felt a little out of place. Too much clothing 👀 and not enough food. I must have looked like a stray dog eyeing up everyone’s food and drink options- grills with steak, burgers, ribs and nearly full bars- cerveza, vino, rum. There were plenty of palm trees to provide some shade for Noel (plus her sun hat) but her trademark eavesdropping wasn’t the same given the language barrier. Of course Millie quickly found a friend and they bounced around in the water for much of the afternoon. Josie and I ventured away from the main area to check out some tide pools. We ended up in an area where people did scuba and snorkel excursions. With a simple mask we did our best to blend in without obviously following.

      Some paella and chicken stuffed avocado highlighted dinner. Well, until a friendly cat joined our table- the girls named Pepe. Josie even looked into the process of being him home with us 🤦‍♂️ 😳 😜.      Read more

      Back to San Juan

      We extended our stay a few hours in Vieques. I wish it could have been a few weeks.

      Arriving back on the main island, we returned to San Juan but stayed at a different hotel in a more modern area of the city. A great pool and more space in the room.

      TMobile district was steps away from the hotel. What a difference from our first days in old San Juan. Think deer district but more. Lots of bright lights and reggaeton music bumping with bright lights. Restaurants with multiple styles of food. An adventure playground, music hall, multiple hotels and a zip line that goes right through the plaza.      Read more

      Travel Day- BWI- San Juan- 29°F to 29°C

      It was an early morning- and even worse for me- very little sleep last night. We left the house at 6, and all was fine until some sort of activity near Ft Meade. It set up some delays, but we ended up at Long Term Parking by 7:20- which was ok, except that we didn't get a shuttle bus for another half hour... And it was packed.

      We got our luggage tags, then headed for the Help Desk to get the TSA Pre✓ thing straightened out. Pit stop- and while there, we were called to board. Luckily uneventful flight.

      The taxi service in San Juan is pretty cool. In order to protect the passengers, there are fixed-price zone rates with additional charge per bag. The rep gives you a piece of paper with the fare, which you give to the driver. Pay cash. Our fare from the airport to Courtyard Marriott Miramar was $23.

      The Hotel was very nice. We were rebated the "Visitor Tax" of $17 in sodas and cookies from their marketplace.

      Dinner was at Los Pinos. We got a Sampler and ate about half.
