I am a retired psychiatric nurse, originally from New Hampshire, USA, but living in North Carolina since 1990. I have always loved wandering near and far. Now that I'm retired, I can enjoy longer and more in-depth travel adventures.

    Beijing, Day 1 Exploration

    April 30, 2012 in China ⋅ 🌫 17 °C

I was up fairly early (7 am), considering the time I got to bed and the long travels. Off for a Chinese breakfast in the hotel (see the photo); 38 yuan (about $6)It was an experience. :)

After breakfast, I was heading out to explore and I ran into one of my tour mates, Karen, an oncology nurse from Denmark. She speaks perfect English, much to me delight! We set out together to explore. Karen arrived the day before and had been out, so she lead the way.

We went through the nearby Hutong. These are traditional communities that are disappearing as Beijing becomes a moden city. It was quite a sensual experience with all the sights, smells, and sounds. I chose not to taste anything!!
