      Waterfront und so…echt chillig!

      Tatsächlich haben wir erstmal ausgeschlafen… bis halb 10, fast 12 Stunden, da die Uhren ja zurückgedreht wurden kommt noch ne Stunde drauf! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ was soll’s, es hat gut getan.
      Nach dem Frühstück sind wir direkt losgestiefelt, hoch zur Burg und dann an die Waterfront zu nem Drink. Da haben wir so schön in der Sonne gesessen, dass wir darauf verzichtet haben die andere Sava-Seite zu erkunden, die liegt nämlich im Schatten,
      Irgendwann sind wir wieder Richtung Fußgängerzone zu einer winzigkleinen Pizzeria in einer Seitengasse, wo es eine richtig leckere Pizza gab.
      Danach noch ein Drink Nähe Hotel und schwups, ist der Tag schon wieder vorbei!      Read more

      Belgrade, Serbia

      Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and former capital of Yugoslavia. It's also one of the most polluted cities in the world based on air quality and you could certainly tell. Its most significant landmark is the Beogradska Tvrđava, an imposing fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. The fort is a testament to the city’s strategic importance to the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires, and it's now the site of several museums as well as Kalemegdan, a vast park.

      The city of Belgrade itself was destroyed 44 times throughout the course of its history. Most recently in WWII where half of Belgrade was totally razed. Today its a very fun, younger, and somewhat modern city. It's known for its quaint Bohemian district loaded with cafes, restaurants, and bars in a nature setting. It feels similar to parts of Boston. They have a predominate night club scene with floating clubs situated along the banks of the Sava River. They also have tons of breweries and orthodox cathedrals downtown. It's home to Tito's residence and mausoleum which we toured as its now part of the Yugoslavia museum not far from the city center.      Read more

      3 Tage in Belgrad

      Die letzten drei Tage haben wir in Belgrad, der Hauptstadt Serbiens, verbracht. Am Samstag haben wir zuerst das Kloster Ravanica besichtigt. Dort waren wir ca. 15 Minuten, aber es war ganz schön viel los. Wir sind danach dann nach Belgrad gefahren. Felix hatte nochmal einen Arzttermin vereinbart, da er nach wie vor Halsschmerzen hat. Wir haben dann in der Nähe der Arztpraxis gewartet bis er seinen Termin hat. Felix wurde dann nochmal richtig durchgecheckt und sein Blut wird auch noch untersucht. Der Arzt konnte aber erstmal etwas Entwarnung geben und meinte wir können weiter reisen, solange er sich nicht überanstrengt. Für uns ging es dann weiter auf einen Campingplatz etwas außerhalb von Belgrad.
      Den Sonntag haben wir dann auf dem Campingplatz verbracht. Es gab mal wieder eine heiße Dusche und wir haben das Auto frisch gemacht. Danach haben wir uns einen gemütlichen Nachmittag gemacht. Wir haben das nach den vielen Fahrtagen und dem aufregenden Arztbesuch einfach mal wieder gebraucht.
      Am Montag ging es dann für uns in die Stadt. Wir sind mit dem Duca reingefahren und hatten etwas Pech bei der Parkplatzsuche. Der erste Parkplatz war etwas zu weit weg von der Innenstadt. Der zweite war leider schon voll. Den dritten Parkplatz haben wir dann gar nicht erst erreicht, wir sind dann auf einem anderen gelandet bei dem wir für 2€/Tag stehen konnten. Wir sind dann erstmal Frühstücken im Raj Urban Vege gegangen. Es war sehr lecker dort, jedoch waren die Portionen etwas klein. Irgendwie war ich dann von der Situation total überfordert und wir sind nochmal kurz zurück zum Duca. Ich habe mir dann einen Moment Zeit genommen, um durchzuatmen und dann konnten wir wieder los. Nächste Mission Souvenirs shoppen und die Festung anschauen. Dann wollten wir eigentlich noch vegane Cevapcici essen gehen, aber das Restaurant hat uns nicht gefallen und wir sind dann wieder zurück zum Duca. Felix hat noch die Postkarte zur Post gebracht und dann sind wir raus aus der Stadt gefahren. Wir haben nochmal bei der Arztpraxis angehalten, weil Felix vorgestern in der Aufregung seinen Beutel vergessen hatte. Der war zum Glück noch da. Weiter ging es dann zu Ikea. Dort gabs dann Mittag-/Abendessen. Vegane Köttbullar gehen einfach immer und haben unsere Stimmung wieder etwas gehoben. Irgendwie war heute einfach der Wurm drin. Die Nacht verbringen wir nun ganz romantisch auf dem Parkplatz des Einkaufszentrums in der Nähe des Lidls.      Read more

      Serbie, belgrade et novi sad

      L'arrivée a belgrade s'est faite directement depuis la frontiere grace a un bulgare qui faisait les 10h de route jusqu'en allemagne d'une traite. Ayant peur qu'il s'endorme au volant nous avons préférés dormir et visiter belgrade que tracer la route jusqu'a budapest malgrès ses propositions insistantes.

      La découverte de belgrade nous a fait une impression étonnante.
      D'abord malgrès les critiques que nous avions pu entendre les jours précédents, le centre ville est tout mignon, avec un super parc en hauteur sur une colline, bien dynamique la nuit.
      Par contre ce qui était marquant c'est l'ambiance politique. Les tensions avec le kosovo ou la bosnie étaient d'actualités et les messages dans la rue "kosovo is serbia" sont récurrents. Cela est sans compter les attractions principales de la ville : les maisons et immeubles s'ayant pris des tirs de missiles de l'OTAN. Les banderoles dans la rue avec des photos d'enfants mutilés et des messages "otan terroriste" cherchent a choquer.
      Mais ce qui nous as le plus marqués, ce sont les magasins pour touristes vendant des tshirts a la gloire de putin et de l'armée russe qui est encore en pleine guerre contre l'ukraine.

      Une fois quittée belgrade nous sommes pris en stop par un chauffeur fort sympathique qui après s'etre arreté sur la bande d'arret d'urgence puis pris l'autoroute a reculons sur 200m nous a deposés a novi sad en nous donnant de l'argent.

      Après s'etre retrouvés coincés quelques heures a coté d'une decharge et d'un chantier, nous décidons de jouer la facilité et prendre un bus pour arriver pas trop tard a budapest et pouvoir en profiter avant de retrouver notre ami moise.      Read more

      Oct 7 - Concert at St. Sava's Church

      The concert at St. Sava’s Church deserves its own footprint.

      St. Sava (1169 or 1174 – 14 January 1236), known as the Enlightener, was a Serbian prince and Orthodox monk, the first Archbishop of the Serbian Church, the founder of Serbian law, and a diplomat. At Mount Athos, he established the monastery of Hilandar, which became one of the most important cultural and religious centres of the Serbian people. In 1219 the Patriarchate exiled in Nicea recognized him as the first Serbian Archbishop, and in the same year he authored the oldest known constitution of Serbia, thus securing full religious and political independence. Sava is regarded as the founder of Serbian medieval literature and is widely considered one of the most important figures of Serbian history.

      The Church of St. Sava is a Serbian Orthodox church which sits on the Vračar plateau in Belgrade, Serbia. It was planned as the bishopric seat and main cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important figure in medieval Serbia. It is built on the presumed location of St. Sava's grave.

      The church cannot be described in mere words and my photos can only hint at its magnificence. It is enormous (it can seat 10,000 people) and is covered inside in intricate mosaic and gold. Our concert was actually held in the crypt, which we expected to be cold and dark and creepy. It wasn’t. It was a beautifully constructed hall with more painted scenes from the life of Christ.

      The private concert was presented by the St. Sava Choir and included religious pieces, Serbian folk songs, “Memory” from “Cats”, and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from “Nabucco”, one of my all-time favourites. The voices were fabulous, and the acoustics were superb. It was a memorable evening. On the bus ride home, our guide sang songs from the different regions of Serbia and the added some Broadway tunes.       Oct 7 - Exploring Belgrade on foot

      After lunch, we went to explore Belgrade on foot. First stop, was Belgrade Fortress that sits high above the Danube River. We didn't go into the fortress itself, but walked around the beautiful grounds that surround it and took in the lovely views of the river.

      Then we headed into the heart of the city. The juxtaposition of architectural styles is what struck us most - old butted up right beside very new (and usually very plain, bordering on ugly). The city has many huge pedestrian-only streets that were alive with Saturday shoppers and thousands of people enjoying outdoor dining and drinking in the hundreds of little cafés that line every street. We saw three weddings - one at a church, one high up at the fortress and another down by the waterfront. Love is all around in Belgrade.

      We have an early dinner tonight, and then we head to a concert at St. Sava's Church. This type of private concert is a signature offering of Scenic Cruises.      Read more

      Oct 7 - Cycling in Belgrade

      Belgrade, situated at the confluence of the Sava River and Danube River, was destroyed and rebuilt 44 times over the centuries as it shuttled between the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and the world. It was the capital of Yugoslavia until ethnic unrest exploded into full out war in the 1990s. Since 2006, Belgrade has been the thriving capital city of the newly formed Republic of Serbia. It has emerged as a banking and media centre as it awaits entry into the EU. Its population is about 1.7 million.

      Belgrade is home to the world’s largest Orthodox Christian church, neo-Byzantine St. Sava’s dome towers over the city. The church can hold 10,000 people. Belgrade University is one of the largest in Europe, with 90,000 students. Those students have made Belgrade into a serious party town, with lots of floating nightclubs on barges along the riverfront.

      Our activity for today (another glorious, warm, sunny day) was a bike ride to the new part of Belgrade. Our guide was Jelena and her sweeper was Stefan. Jelena explained the new buildings going up in the waterfront area – much of the construction money comes the United Arab Emirates, and many of the expensive apartments/condos are now occupied by Russians. On the other side of the river, and area that used to be swampy and held a concentration camp during the war, is where much more construction is taking place.

      We did a lot of biking and not much picture taking. Our destination was Lake Sava on Ada Ciganlija, with its man-made beaches of about 6 km in length, is the largest open swimming area in the Republic of Serbia, which welcomes up to 150,000 visitors on a daily basis during the summer bathing season. The area boasts tennis courts, pickleball courts, playgrounds, BBQ pits, picnic tables, soccer fields and lots and lots of green space – a really welcome relief from the city especially in summer. The area also boasts diving and rowing competition facilities. We stopped for a break at a little café. We got to watch automated water skiing – no boat/motor/driver/spotter required – very eco-friendly. Lines with handles just rotate around a course and the skier snags one and is guided around, past buoys and over small jumps. Very cool.      Read more

      Obwohl uns vorher erzählt wurde, die Stadt wäre nicht schön und bestünde nur aus zusammengewürfelten Gebäuden, hat sie uns sehr gut gefallen! Sie kommt jetzt nicht unter die Top 10 aber ein Fehler ist der Besuch dort definitiv nicht.

      Beowölfe in Beograd

      Sofia verlassen wir und haben nach Belgrad nochmal so einen richtigen kulturellen Moment, als unsere Fahrerin bulgarische und serbische Mucke ballert.
      Belgrad ist megaa cool, ein kleiner Gehimtipp. Schöne Stadt und man hat so ein richtiges Großstadtfeeling mit dem ganzen Trubel. Das Hostel war super und wir haben da sehr nette Leute getroffen, aber ansonsten war es eine serbische Soap: No Electricity, No hot Showers, No Wifis. Also haben wir Karten gespielt und gelabert im Dunkeln oder nachaktiv den MCs nebenan ausgecheckt. Grüße an Ann-Sophie, Sara und Juri.

      Hello Belgrade!!!

      We arrived late yeasterday afternoon in Belgrade, Serbia and were treated to a wonderful home cooked Serbian meal. Marija, one of Rebecca's Whitehall Inn girls, and her husband Luka were our amazing chefs & hosts. They introduced us to many Serbian foods and customs. We had a great time catching up, meeting their beautiful baby and enjoying all the food. Today, they showed us the lively Belgrade Beach with tons of summer activities. Marija & Luka took us to a restaurant designed in the style of a traditional Serbian home. Again we had some awesome local food and conversation. They were wonderful hosts who suggested many things for us to do or see while we are in Belgrade. After an afternoon of shopping in the trendy shopping district where our room is located, we took Marija & Luka's suggestion and went to the Bohemian Quarter on Skadarlija street for yet another amazing local meal. We think there is definitely a pattern developing during our travels... We REALLY like to try the local food. We are looking forward to catching up with Theodora & Alessandra tomorrow. T & Alex worked at the Whitehall Inn during the 2nd season. And, of course, additional sight seeing & sampling local fare.Read more
