      Belgrad

      October 30, 2023 in Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

😉🥰Read more

      Galeria Mall

      August 16 in Serbia ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

We needed a short break of the amazing heat of the city and escaped to the nearby mall.

The Galeria Mall is located in the new and modern quarter of Belgrade, about 15min from the center by car. The region is called Belgrade Waterfront and is very fancy. 🛍️

The mall offers a huge variety of restaurants, indoor games for the family and of course the normal european brands. Everything very nice decorated and comfortable.

Of course our kids couldnt resist the very special bubble tea with glitter inside 😄

Last afternoon to explore Belgrade. A river cruise on the Sava, with views of the old town, passing under the Old Sava bridge, looking up to the the Belgrade Fortress and a view of the Serbian Orthodox church of St Archangel Michael. Plus a picture of the inside.
Some more of the wonderful old buildings and sun setting over the conflux of the Danube and Sava.

      🇷🇸 Serbian dinar banknotes

      April 9 in Serbia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We withdrew some money to fill up with petrol (sometimes in the Balkans they don't accept cards at petrol stations). €1 = SD 117,10 (April 2024)

An excellent opportunity to see the banknotes, more similar to euros than the Madecon ones. The 100 dinar banknote with Nikola Tesla on it and the Tesla formula, a unit of measurement of the magnetic field, is beautiful and will come with me to Luxebourg as a 1 euro souvenir.Read more

    • Day 200

      Belgrade

      October 20, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Got up and packed then waited for our shuttle bus.

A HAPPY 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO US 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

      I have really enjoyed Turkey.
I have felt safe the entire time. Istanbul, not Turkey, is currently orange on trip advisor which is the second highest alert.
Potential danger at every turn but I haven't felt threatened by the people. In Morocco some people really set off warning bells and individuals in other countries too. Not Turkey. I have felt very relaxed and welcomed. They get very excited when we are Australian and despite some people with obvious woman issues I have been treated with respect which I wasn't expecting. I enjoy answering for Will way to much. When a man ignores me and will only talk to Will I always butt in 😂😂😂 like hey I'm boss hahahaha

      Turkey also is quite pretty.
Even though everyone tells me it's a non denomination county, not a Muslim country (bull, it 100% is) people have not had judgement in their eyes towards foreigners.
A really nice place and I would come back.
I find the Ottoman Empire interesting and we didn't really touch on it.

Our shuttle took 1.5 hours to reach the airport and it was so bumpy we both felt sick. We had to scan all bags before entering the airport and then Rush rush into McDonalds
      😝
Hooley Dooley we got some American sized meals. They were ridiculous. They don't put ice in the Coke though which was shit.

We waited for our checkin to open then went and dumped our bags.
Through more customs - a blue stamp this time woo!
I even saw a lady lift her burka to the man customs officer. A first.

Another bag check and we were through!
We already had a gate number so we went there but a plane to Saudi Arabia was yet to board and we got the strangest looks 😂 definitely didn't fit in with that crowd.

We waited the 1.5 hours and have now hopped on the plane and didn't die during take off 💪🏻
We should land in an hour. Will is greatly uncomfortable because he doesn't fit and I am very very hot and want a drink. I went to buy one at the Airport but flat out refused because I bought water yesterday for 1 lira - the airport was charging 17. Get stuffed.

Landed - as we exited we had to show our passports. Being Australian we got let straight through but half the plane had their passports confiscated and all went on an excursion through the airport for further questioning. Hahaha
Turkish people were let through - it was the Saudi Arabians and others that were stopped.

The customs lady was really nice but laughed at my picture " it Looks like your brother, sorry"
      Heh 😒
Why do customs insist on using the same page to stamp? I'm trying to fill the book, pick a new page!! Lol

We got picked up at the airport - my Angharad sign was easy to spot.
I love the stress it takes off.
Dude drove us to our apartment. He gave us suggestions on the way of things of to eat and drink.
There was lots of traffic so it took a while to arrive.
I organised a private driver through our Bnb for 15€
A taxi would have cost the same but this saved the whole finding the address debacle we so often experience .

The house is nice. Cosy feel.

We went out for food and it was so cheap :)
I finally had another shopska salad 😭😭👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼YAYAYAY

Only issue was I accidentally ate a pepper because I thought it was capsicum. MOUTH ON fire 🔥🔥🔥

We went to the supermarket and bought staples.
I found Mi goreng ** so I'm keen to try their version.

I left my phone cord in turkey so my phone won't make it through the night :(

We Skyped Jess and Jaxon. She is auditioning with Aunty Anne (Petes Aunty) for the family feud today LOL.

    • Day 201

      Belgrade

      October 21, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

I had a bath this morning even though its kid sized, I made it work 👍🏼
      Flooded the bathroom though lol.

We walked 2km to the supposed best shopping centre - what rubbish. It had like 10 shops a level and only clothes.

On the walk home we both bought new phone cords.

We watched 19 episodes of Big Bang today. Heheh

      Very relaxing day.

We went out for burritos. Very yum!

Serbia thus far has very ugly buildings lol.

Our Bnb is next to where the American embassy was - it got pulled down a month ago and is being moved.

We couldn't find a taco pack in the supermarket which we are pretty devo about.

Jess told us they made it through to the final round of the family feud auditions. They find out in a week if they make it onto the show hahahah.

    • Day 202

      Belgrade

      October 22, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The bed isn't big enough for my preferred amount of elbow and knee space.
During the night a car alarm went on for soooo long it was so annoying!!!!!!!! I shut the window which helped a little but I could still hear it.

We went to do a load of washing but didn't have any detergent so that's one thing on our to do list today.

Will fart assed around for ages. After I finally convinced him to shower we got ready and headed to the Nikola Tesla museum.
I'll be honest. I had less than zero understanding for how everything worked. There was a free tour but we couldn't hear or see so we didn't stay on it.
Electricity and well, pretty much the process of most things is beyond my comprehension. 😂
I know he is an important dude, he discovered lots of things the most important being radio waves and the Tesla coil.
Literally no understanding of what either is apart from like why a remote works hey.

Anyway his ashes were there so that was worth the $5 entry.
He was also born in what is now Croatian so I don't know how he is Serbian but ok.

We then went looking for food. It took an hour but we found a maccas 😂😂😂😂
Highlight: I fed a cat my cheeseburger patty.

Everyone is excellent at English. On par with the Norwegians.

We tried another supermarket but it didn't sell taco packs either 😭😭

The whole city is grey. It reminds me of a french mime skit where all the colour fades away.

We walked through a few parks and none are overly pretty.

We are home now and going to have another Big Bang marathon 😝

      Cooked noodles for dinner.

Enjoying having our own apartment and space to do nothing in.

    • Day 203

      Belgrade

      October 23, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

      Slept like crap.
Woke up at 9:45 to prep for my Skype date with mum and dad. Pretty annoyed with myself - I had planned it so the date was at 11 but I got the time difference wrong so I had to be up by 10.
We chatted for a little bit and caught up on some stuff.
I planned to go back to sleep but my talking had woken Will up 😭

I took my sweet ass time but we finally left the house. The weather was miserable. I at least wore an appropriate jacket but Will was freezing.
We went to Belgrade fortress. It was about 2km away but the way we went made it probably more like 3.5km
We got to the fortress wall but there was a barrier and it continued and continued and continued 😑
We walked along the water which was nice but not great compared to other city waterfronts.

Got to the entrance - it didn't look too flash hot from the front but once we got in it was really cool.
It had lots of sections and was really open. It had a redone draw bridge.
It came out into where I assume the little village section was. It's definitely the prettiest part of Belgrade so far.
I don't know why but once we walked through one of the big gates it became like a normal park - it had basketball courts and a dinosaur park (which was awesome!)
Really great community spot. There was also a museum section and old war tanks on display on the lawn.
I actually thought it was great. I'm gonna give it a 5 star review. It was also free 👍🏼
We then went to get food.
Emily finally messaged me and invited us out but I was soooo tired. I went home and napped. We have organised to meet up tomorrow.
I had a nap then we went and got milk and cereal which we had for dinner.
We have watched raiders of the lost arc and wolf of Wall Street.

    • Day 204

      Belgrade

      October 24, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

The first order of business for the day was to go out and get burritos. Not as good as last time because they weren't as generous with the ingredients.
It also comes with churros and tasty lemonade so that was great.
Walked back home and watched more Big Bang.
Will Skyped Bill for his birthday while I was having a shower.
I am loving our Big Bang marathon- we are smashing our way through it!
We looked up things to do in Belgrade and there is legit nothing. 😓 we still have the walking tour to do but we will have to do it another day cause we are meeting up with Emily tonight.
We had a mid day nap because you know, we have overexerted ourselves...
we got ready to walk 4kms to Emily's babas house.
      It. Was. Bucketing. 😒😒😒😒
We got so wet on this walk. The drains did not do well today, the whole city was flooding. Cars were spraying us with water and I must have a hole in my left hiking show becUse my sock was saturated!
Wills pants were cream so you could really see how wet he was.
We had to walk over this bridge. It had to be at least a kilometer long and it was so windy and cold.
We got to her street and couldn't find the damn thing.
Lucky she said she was next to the helicopter pad because it was something big enough we eventually spotted.
We had to cross a main highway to get there though ... that wasn't fun.
Found her 😁 big hugs all round.

We went up for dinner where there was lots of traditional food - a lot with Turkish origin. The cheese pitas were terrific. There was also like a garlic carrot thing I enjoyed!
Oh and yellow capsicum stuffed with sour cream. Different.
We chatted for about 4 hours - it went so quick!
      SHE BROUGHT MY MEDS 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm set for 8 months lol.
Her mum chatted for a while then joined her grandma in the other room. Baba doesn't speak English so she didn't hang around at all. She is so cute though! Really young too!! Only 67!!!! The grandad is sick so he was in bed.
We are planning to meet up tomorrow so that should be great. We both really enjoyed tonight.
      So good to see her.

Walked home. Naturally it started raining again.

I he a headache - that could be from the Rakia - bloody eastern Europe! It's so strong.

So happy to be in bed!

    • Day 206

      Belgrade

      October 26, 2017 in Serbia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Left at 11 and headed to a shopping center Em selected for us to meet at.
It was a hassle to get too. 3km over the bridge, across tram lines and through a tunnel because you couldn't cross the highway.
      Found her :)
Her mum was there too and she shouted us lunch in the food court 😀 such a lovely lady.

She then left and the 3 of us got on our way and headed to the museum of Yugoslavia. But first, we had fun on a tram! Thank heavens Em can speak Serbian (can completely understand + communicate but isn't fluent) because she was able to ask for help on how to activate our ticket. They have like a hard copy card thing like an opal card so she paid for all 3 fares to save us having to buy a card.
It took us half way before it then went the wrong way... hahah
We jumped off as soon as we could at walked the rest - another 3km.
The museum had shocking signage and if she hadn't had her map loaded I would have walked straight past.
      Nice fountain out front.
She paid our entry fee for this too - $4 each and we then went up the stairs to the exhibit.
So essentially the museum is terrible however - despite its crap layout, waste of space and just general boringness - surprisingly, I did learn something.
It was nothing about Yugoslavia itself but its leader, Tito.
He was leader of the communist party which me and Em couldn't wrap our head around because we automatically associate communism with bad but everyone really seems to like him.
He did a lot lot lot of work with Africa. The museum didn't mention anything other than his connection and trips to Africa and how he had offered scholarships to African children to come to Yugoslavia.
They had one good blurb thing reminding of the significance of his attitude towards the Africans because it was at a time that there were still colour segregation in many countries and how advanced his attitude was.
There was a short video about the scholarship program.
Unfortunately it would seem once Yugoslavia was lost, so were the connections.

Tito is responsible for the non aligned movement.
Countries that do not want to be with or against any major superpower countries.

We then left and walked around abit until we found "the glass house"
Tito is buried inside. His grave wasn't all that fancy but a nice spot. Sunny lol
Inside were presents he was given from other major heads such as JFK and Queen Elizabeth 2 WHO GAVE HIM A SIGNED PHOTO OF HERSELF HHAHAHAHAHH WHAT A RIDICULOUS PRESENT 😂😂😂😂
When he died he was transported in the blue train - it stopped in at many stations for people to pay respects. A model of the train was there.
He was also involved in the relay of youth which took place across Yugoslavia. Every year people put Battons on his grave - heaps on display and some were awesome!!

He was a really popular man. There was a picture showing which countries had someone attend the funeral - all of maybe 10 didn't. That's it.
      How Very impressive.

We then went walking to what is apparently the 2nd biggest church in the world and started being built is 1935 but is still not done. Not even close.
The outside is great but the inside is completely empty and just scaffolding. The crypt is done though and truly beautiful!!! No one is buried there though.. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

We bought some plum rakia for us to send home. $12 for a litre of spirits isn't bad. Bought from the street so hopefully we don't go blind.. 😅

We went back to our burrito shop to show Emily and then said our goodbyes:(
I had a great day - so good seeing her!!
We went home, I packed and shower, watched Big Bang and finally replied to everyone I have been meaning to.

Oh forgot to mention - as we entered the museum - barely entered the room and Emily touched a display and broke it. I LAUGHED SO LOUDLY which alerted the guard. She put it back and we walked on.
Nothing with any significance luckily!! Hahah
