    Bled Island

    August 24, 2017 in Slovenia ⋅

Bled Island (Blejski otok) - we took the easy option and paid for someone else to do the rowing over to the island. The island has several buildings, the main one being the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, built in its current form near the end of the 17th century. The church has a 52 m tower and there is a Baroque stairway from 1655 with 99 stone steps leading up to the building. It is a popular venue for weddings - there was one there today. Traditionally it is considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the steps on the day of their wedding before ringing the bell and making a wish inside the church. It was 28 degrees today! I think the bride and groom skipped that tradition.Read more

    Lake Bled

    August 24, 2017 in Slovenia ⋅

Spent the day at beautiful Lake Bled, much busier and more tourist centred than where we are staying at Bohinj. Bled Castle sits on a lofty height above the lake and in the middle of the lake on an island sits The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. As it's an Eco lake we travelled to the island on a row boat called a Pletna which is an alpine boat for 18 People and rowed at the back by an ores man. There is also a summer luge run- quite scary looking!Read more

    Bled Castle

    November 6, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Tour of the castle. Foggy day. I had really hoped to hit Bled on a sunny day as it is purported to be gorgeous. Not to be though. We got to use the Gutenberg printing press to print our own castle print - very cool. Tried to show part of the video here. FindPenguins limits lengths of videos. Now in our way to Ljubljana for a city tour - driving through the rain. Only one more day left on our trip, so in reality we lucked out big time with the weather.

    Lake Bled

    June 25, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

We enjoyed a night of luxury and relaxation at the grand old iconic Toplice Hotel right on the shore of Lake Bled. This building has an amazing history and is built on top of a natural thermal spring so swimming in the pool felt therapeutic and memorable.

    Day 227: Final Bled Exploration

    September 29, 2017 in Slovenia ⋅

Last day in Lake Bled! Nice weather today so we finally decided to take a boat out to the island in the centre of the lake. 14 euros each which was a bit pricey, but at least Schnitzel was free! Just us and an older American couple on the boat so we had a nice little chat to them, they were fairly well-travelled as well which was good.

The island itself was a slight let-down, as there isn't much there besides the church, a cafe and a souvenir shop. We couldn't go in the church on account of Schnitzel, so we had a coffee in the sun and just enjoyed the atmosphere. The island is very small, only a couple of minutes to walk the perimeter, so we did a lap and by then it was time to get back on the boat.

Rode back to the wharf near our apartment where we walked back to the car and then drove up to the castle overlooking the lake. Entry was a bit steep again at 10 euros, but the museum and stuff was moderately interesting. Unbeatable views!

Had a small lunch on the walls overlooking the lake, then had a look around at all the various aspects of the castle. Museum, church, crypt, towers and battlements. A few other interesting things too like a wine cellar, printing works and a blacksmith though these were mostly just selling souvenirs.

Back to the apartment for the afternoon where we chilled out, then drove around the lake in the evening for one last dinner with Shandos's parents. Chatted away with them into the evening until it was finally time to say goodbye. Not sure when we'll see them again, could be quite a while!

    Day 11 - Lake Bled

    June 28, 2016 in Slovenia ⋅

Today we woke up in a treehouse! We stayed at the Garden Village, an eco-resort in the town of Bled. We went for a run on the walking path around Lake Bled (me once, Chris twice plus he jumped in the lake). Later in the afternoon, we rented a boat and Chris rowed me across to the picturesque island in the middle of the lake (he initially set out rowing backwards, but we finally figured it out). On the island, we climbed the ninety-nine steps to the top and toured the idyllic Church of the Assumption of Mary. Legend has it, if you ring the “wishing bell" of the church three times (and thereby give honor to the Virgin Mary), your wish will come true. So I rang the bell ten or twenty times (I lost count). We climbed the clock tower and then I rowed us back to shore. Of course there was a castle to see as well (what’s a Slovenian town without a castle?), so we meandered our way up to the top of the hill where the castle was perched on the limestone cliff. The castle was partially closed due to a wedding (not ours) but the views from the castle alone were well worth the trip!Read more

    Lake Bled, Slovenia

    August 2, 2017 in Slovenia ⋅

Solo traveling is going great so far!! I've been able to explore places unplanned, change my route, and take some time to really focus on me. Without sounding like a hippie, it's been so peaceful taking some time out and only worrying about what I'm going to have for breakfast and what bikini to wear. I jumped on a bus and visited the famous Lake Bled, about an hour north from Ljubljana. When I arrived, it reminded me a lot of Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, surrounded by the Alps and nature, with hundreds of tourists. However, Queenstown and Wanaka are still the most beautiful! I met the two Dutch girls from the night before for a few hours before walking around the Lake taking in the serenity of being in such a place all on your own. It was getting pretty late but I wanted to climb up to the castle for a bit of a work out so managed to do that quickly before jumping on a bus back to Ljubljana. While I was at the Lake, I was able to reflect on where I've been over the last three months and it still amazes me that it has been three months since leaving home! Halfway through my adventure the greatest thing I've learnt is that no matter where in the world you are, it's the people you meet that change your life. I've met some truly incredible people since leaving NZ and my mind is so open to the world, as opposed to the little bubble we find ourselves in in beautiful NZ. Traveling solo forces you out of your comfort zone, pushes you to trust your instincts and reminds you of everything that's important in your individual world. If anyone ever travels near Slovenia, I'll be recommending for sure they go to Ljubljana and Bled and I hope to be back to visit again soon!Read more
