      Les gorges de Vingtar

      June 23, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

On monte vite à l'abri.

Nous prenons la direction de Bled pour trouver un endroit pour la nuit. 🌃

Around the Lake and Foodie Paradise

      September 16, 2023 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We walked around the lake and came across the open-air markets with amazing local handcrafts and arts. I could barely leave some stunning earrings behind (although I don't even have ear holes for that matter). As it was super hot, we decided to get some ice cream and stumbled across the excellent and famous flavour of Sladogled. It's ice cream with Mascarpone, raisins, chocolate, cinnamon, caramel and cake crumbles. It was delicious although it tasted a bit like alcohol. Drunken from that, we found Alunas doppelganger as we sat down again at the lake to cool our feet. Across the lake, a basketball game was on. Actually it was on the lake, they were playing on an artificial lake surface. The music was extremely loud and we could get the gist of what was happening. Later, we walked on by and found out that Jordan (the sports wear) was releasing some new shoes and therefore made a huge event out of it with the help of the Slovenian tourism board. The youths of Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary were playing against each other, rocking the lake with their dance and ball moves.
As we had enough, we walked back to our accommodation where Aluna found a new friend in a donkey.
Then, we got hungry, so we searched for a restaurant a little further away than the tourist spots because we thought that might be cheaper and much more traditionally Slovenian. We found a great place named Gostilna Fortuna and saw that the Vintgar Gorge wasn't too far way of the restaurant. So we drove their first. However, it was already closed and from the outside we couldn't see more than a few stones and fresh, cold water. So, we drove to the restaurant and had an absolute blast. First, we had some traditionally made cottage cheese dumplings (we guess that Smetana was inside - a slav kind of creme) which were delicious. Then Shakhzoda chose a trout with some potatoes that reminded me of the mashed potatoes with onions inside that my Mum always cooks. I've got some deep fried cottage cheese filled "gnocchi" that didn't look like gnocchi at all but nevertheless tasted very good. At the end, we treated ourselves to LePotica with walnuts inside and vanilla ice cream, and came into Foodie heaven.

      Gorge-ous

      June 26 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We were going to drive to the Logar Valley today but as the weather forecast was a bit iffy (see video for the amount of water coming out of the sky when we woke up!) we opted for a gorge walk at Vintgar Gorge. I didn't realise it's a paid activity with obligatory helmets (lol as there was no danger at all) but it was well worth the money as the water was stunning! And we avoided the ⛈️ Day finished off with a refreshing dip in lake Bled (after a lot of faffing looking for a place that you're allowed to swim). 💙 We've ended up with way more space than we thought in our rented apartment so had dins in to enjoy the luxury after 3 nights of hostels, which was interrupted by our tyre popping as we drove onto the driveway from a nail that we knew was there 🙄 45 mins later and our guys Sixt had sent a man out to change the tyre and a brand new car and taken the old one away O: so back on the road for us tomorrow 😁🚗Read more

      Slovenia Here We Come

      June 3, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Another day another train trip. Today we are heading to Slovenia, in fact a small village outside of Bled. We always have some sort of drama when we travel so it will be interesting to see what today brings. The trip starts at Salzburg Central Station to Villach, where we swap lines to Lecse Bled.

The scenery along the way is spectacular, travelling along side the Alps, stopping at many small villages along the way.

Once me made it to Lesce Bled train station our Air bnb host picked us up. Matzik, Matthew in English, drove us to Bled, stopping at the local supermarket so we could get some staples. It’s tough shopping, we had just got used to German words for items, now it’s Slovenian. Even choosing butter, full cream milk etc is a challenge. Matzik tells us it is cutting the grass season, they only cut the grass 3times a year, now, in a month and then another month. This is made into hay bales for the animals over winter. Wish we only cut the grass 3times.

We also find out today is an Election Day so not much is open. We reach our accomodation, an old family home. I imagine this was Mum and dads home, they died, everything has been left in place and now rented as air bnb. The cupboards and drawers are full to the brim. Some have batteries, candles, lots of crockery and china. I’m surprised it is all still here. The 4 bed rooms are large as well as 3 bathrooms, even a bath.

We are in the village of Spondje Gorge, there are no eating places here but there is a local bar. The bus is across the road, Bled in 5mins down the road.

After unpacking we head to Bled for our first glimpse of the lake. It is beautiful, the castle over looks the lake, right in the middle is an island with a church perched on top.

We find a restaurant it enjoy a cold beverage and a Mexican inspired platter. A small pub crawl back to the bus stop to head home. We were heading to the local but it closes at 8pm on Sundays.

      Vintgar Schlucht

      Today in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Read more
