      Kapstadt, die älteste Stadt Südafrikas

      November 21, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Übrigens leben in Kapstadt rund 3.7 Millionen Menschen.

      Table Mountain.⛰️

      November 11, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

De Table Mountain isch eis vo de bekanntische Wahrzeiche in Kapstadt. Demit mir rechtzitig zum Sunneuntergang on the Top of the Mountain sind, hanich mich mitere Gruppe mit fascht nur brasilianische Studente am 15:00 Uhr uf de Weg gmacht. Mitm Uber simmer richtig Table Mountain gfahre. Wommer bi de Talstation ahcho sind hend zerscht mal alli dJagge müesse montiere will en ziemlich chalte Wind gange isch. Weder e Ussicht no en Sunneuntergang het üs wie erhofft da obe erwartet.

Table Mountain and last day in Cape Town

      September 27, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Our final day in Cape Town and we had to be away early because the queues to go up the cable car for Table Mountain were a 2 hour wait on average. The crowds were worse because it is currently school holidays and also something about heritage week and all South African residents had free admission to the mountain. It took us an hour and a half of waiting so it could have been worse. Once again we had a beautiful day...quite hot really... and the views were certainly spectacular. Quite windy though, and there was a bit of a mist/fog/haze over the bay and city so the view was not crystal clear.

We were back down the mountain by 11am and spent the next hour on a city tour driving by points of interest such as the colourful Bo Kaap neighbourhood and parliament house where there was a statue of Nelson Mandela as he appeared on the steps. The afternoon was free so we caught the free hotel shuttle too the waterfront and explored.

We liked Cape Town - the people are very polite and friendly and you can wander around the souvenir shops without being hassled to buy, buy, buy! However, there is evidence of high crime in South Africa with houses surrounded by high walls, fences are electrified or have razor wire. Our guide told us that insurance companies would not insure your property unless it had all these preventative measures in place. Unemployment is high and it was common to see people just waiting on the median strips where they may be picked to do a days labour.

Anyway, tomorrow we leave to commence our journey along the garden route,

      Table Mountain Aquarium

      February 7 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

I didn’t sleep too well - must be jet lag.

We walked to a nearby hotel that gave us instructions to all 5 minutes to the Convention Center and catch the Hop on Hop off bus there. We got on the red line that took us up to the gondola for Table Mountain. Even though there was a cloud at the top of the mountain, we still took the gondola ride. Interesting, the gondola itself was rotating around as we journeyed up.

We then continued down the Red line to the Two Oceans Aquarium. Fantastic exhibit. Reminded me of the Sydney one.

As we boarded to the Blue line bus, I fell asleep on Glenn’s shoulder. We were in traffic. Next stop was the botanical gardens. We had a frittata and cheese cake at the entrance of the park. Cafe shop.

We chatted with 2 ladies from Holland as we stopped to take photos. As we were getting on the bus again, our friend Dennis and Jane were up on the top deck. Amazing. We are going to spend Friday anyway with them and earlier in the morning, Jane had texted me and asked us to come to their Airbnb for dinner. So we were heading to their place after the Bus tour.

All in all our accommodations were good at the 12 story high rise. No AC. Beautiful sunrise. Close to the Hop on Hop off bus line. It took an adventure to park the car and get the lock box out with the keys to the place, but it worked!

      Now heading to Megan’s place.

      Table Mountain & Stellenbosch

      December 4, 2015 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Another day, another early morning wakeup. Sina, Brittany and Nico woke up at 6:30 am to get an early start on hiking up Table Mountain. The bay was surrounded by thick fog in the morning but we weren't deterred as it can quickly change. We parked the car at the level of the lower cable car station and walked along the road for ~1 km to get to the trailhead. Even by the time we started the hike, fog had cleared out and we were greeted with spectacular views right off the bat. The hike itself was no joke. The rock steps went essentialy straight up the mountain. There were lots of plants along the path, part of the Cape's diverse floral kingdoms. We made it to the top in 1h40m, under the quoted 2-3 hour duration but significantly slower than 45 minutes by a local guy training for a marathon who passed us near the end. It was quite grueling but well worth the effort when we reached the platueau. Fog still hung low over the Camps Bay side and made for great pictures while the city, harbor and Lions Head views were clear. We rode the cableway on the way down, but the experience would not have been the same without the hike. In our opinion, Table Mointain was rightly named as part of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

After a well-deserved shower and celebratory drink, we ventured to the Cape wine regions. A roughly 1 hour drive took us to the famous Vergelegen winery for some wine tasting. The second winery, Uva Mira, was located several hundred feet up the mountain side and featured spectacular views of the valley and ocean. The wine was also very good.

We ate dinner in the town of Stellenbosch. The small downtown area was filled with unique restaurants and shops.
