      Kruger, the lucky goodbye drive

      February 8 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Not sure if you’ve kept count of animals I saw in the past days, I did and I was clearly missing the rhino from my big 5 list. Since it’s only a few rhinos in the park and they typically hang out in another part of Kruger, I totally accepted my fate that I’ll have to come back another time to see one but then, the magic of Kruger struck again… my original plan was to do a sunset drive after half-a-day of work but the weather was so cloudy that it was not worth it, so Devon came to my rescue and offered to take me out for a final little ride to Kruger as a goodbye (or see-you-later 💖). We were just leaving the hostel when I was saying that it’s only the rhino I need to see but the chances are very low when Devon stopped the car and yelled: there’s the rhino!!! WHAT???? He joking??? He wasn’t, there it was, literally 50 meters from the hostel by the fence 🥹🥹 I was shaking and shed some tears for the unexpected surprise, it was unreal!!! Devon was probably a shaman in his previous life and pulled all strings to make my stay unforgettable 🫶🙏 We then drove out to the park, saw some zebras, giraffes, impalas, gnus, just the usuals, some lions in the distance, and said goodbye to the park. Un-freaking-believable! 🥹🥹🥹🦏Read more

      Veggie Safari

      April 11, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Read more

      Crocodile Bridge

      May 11, 2017 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Picked up our friend, Cindy, at Jo'burg airport and drove to our first campsite in Kruger. Drive took a little longer than expected and arrived at sunset. Had lots of 'fun' setting up our camp for the first time as the sun was setting, but eventually got settled and quickly reminded of two things: 1. night time is noisy in the African bush and 2. monkeys are quick. Yes, we were mugged by monkeys, again, 1st day into our camping trip. Went out for a drive next morning with some great animals - giraffes, elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocs and lots of other great critters (Cindy would request we mention the adorable warthogs). Also, very lucky to spot two rhino. Two nights at this camp then heading up north.Read more

      Kruger, the night game drive

      February 6 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Sorry y’all I was on duty of the torch at the night safari so I didn’t take any photos besides this beauty and I’m still waiting for the others to upload their pictures, so coming soon!!!

Meanwhile - some photos have arrived, waiting for more, but look at some of our lucky sightings: we saw 9 lions crossing the road, chilling, heard them calling for each other, and hung out with a leopard for 20 minutes, casually walking on the gravel road, marking his territory. Even the ranger was impressed, it’s not every day that you see a leopard from such close proximity!! 🐆

      More to come! ✨🌙

      Kruger, morning game drive #1

      February 5 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

As always, I’ve got no time to waste, I started my first day at 5 am and went for my first morning game drive. Since I was the only guest, some of the hostel crew joined me and Rene (one of the owners) for the drive, and we had the best fun ever!!! We had tons of sightings, I couldn’t get enough of watching NatGeo in real life from a hand-reach. 🤩 Luckily, we played bingo during the drive so I could keep track of the animals we’ve seen. Tons of giraffes, zebras, elephants, babies too, hippo ears and noses on the top of the water, monkeys, buffalos, gnus, impalas, crocs, tons and tons of birds including Zazu, many-many Pumbas (warthog), but the coolest and scariest of all was a hyena who circled around our car, brrrr, I still get the chills. 🫣 The last photo I took at the hostel with my new friend, a tiny impala. 🤩 At night one more girl arrived and I let myself to be convinced that I should do another morning drive with Devon (the other manager), as well as a night drive in the dark organized by the park, not the boys, so another early morning was waiting for me, but at this point and at this level of excitement: who cares??? I’ll sleep when I’m back to the rainy and dark Amsterdam. 😜

      Safari Nr. 1 im Kruger

      August 24, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      Day 2 of Krugerpark!

      August 7, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Fijne avond vriendjes 🥰!

      The Kruger National Park

      April 18, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This morning I was up first at 5:15am closely followed by Pete then Ellie, we were all super excited, today was the day we were going to the Kruger.
At 6:20am we all bundled in the car, armed with cameras and packed with food and drinks for a picnic later and we set off for the gates.
Pete did his usual thing of telling us at the gates that we needed our passports which we didn’t have but luckily we had photo ID in the form of our driving licenses and got access. Then we were on our way.
We first crossed over the amazing crocodile river seeing hippos and crocodile in the water and on the other side we were officially in the park and our game drive had begun.
We were on the lookout for anything different today and new species were a must and our first sighting was a dwarf mongoose, a whole family of them running along the dirt roads. Then we rounded a corner and Ellie spotted an eagle owl sitting on the branch of a dead tree. This was a super rare daytime sighting.
By mid morning we had passed hundreds of impala’s, Kudus, water buffalo and wilderbeast when we passed a group of game drive vehicles parked up on a side road.
We pulled up behind them and from the front of one of the them walked a mother and baby rhino. It was another incredible sighting and we were super close. From there we drove to a viewpoint high up on a rock and had a panoramic view of the Kruger National park.
Just after 1:30pm and around 100km into the park we came to a rest stop that had a cafe, picnic area and small shop. We stopped here for lunch and Pete cooked us all Impala and cheese sausage in hotdog rolls with Braie sauce.
From there we had to start heading back as the road we wanted was closed and we just didn’t have the time to go further up and take a detour.
For the next 2 hours it was pretty quiet animal wise as we were in the heat of the day at 32°c and the animals had obviously sought shelter while we drove around cooking in the mobile greenhouse that is Karin.
Pete said the animals would start to be more visible again between 3:30 and 4pm and bang on 3:30pm a huge elephant came trundling down the road towards us. Pete turned the engine off and done the windows up and just as he got to the car he turned off the road and walked into the bush.
Then at exactly 4pm as we started going downhill we spotted something running down the road. As we got closer we saw it was a hyena and we couldn’t believe our luck. Straight away I was hanging out of the back windows with my camera while Ellie was videoing with her phone from the front. To top the sighting off he just ran in front of the car for about 400 meters then he stopped and we were right next to him. He just stood there looking at us while we clicked away. It was another super rare and incredible sighting.
We drove on and just 50 meters down the road we found another hyena just laying down at the side of the road. We stopped again to take pictures and then realised we were parked next to a huge hole under the road. It was there den, and they were coming out to start the hunt early as it had been so hot all day.
It was now 4:45pm and we had to be out by 6pm and it would take us another 45 mins to reach the gate with no sightings.
Luckily there were no more rare sightings and we left the park just after 5:30pm, exhausted from all the hunting but thrilled with what we had seen.

      Morning Drive Krüger

      November 23, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    • Day 2

      Crocodile Bridge Gate

      December 27, 2018 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 31 °C

A viagem demorou quase 11h e pouco dormi. No consulado eram 110€.
