      Rain in the Karoo

      January 4, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Knowing I was camping in Mokala I needed to get some fresh meat to cook on the fire. Carnarvon Spar only had massive bulk packs and Britstown had nothing (Britstown is where you join the N12 to Kimberly and civilization). Luckily for me the Total service station in Strydenburg also has a butchery and a few other things and so I got a pack of lamb-chops for dinner.

On the way towards Kimberly and Mokola I noticed things in the sky I hadn’t seen the whole of the previous day. Clouds. Not just any clouds, big rain clouds and the closer I got to Mokola the bigger and badder and more rain-cloudy they looked. So much so that about 5km from Mokola the rain started to come down and I started I get concerned about how to pitch my tent. None the less it was an impressive sight watching the rain roll inane listen to the Northern Black-Bellied Korhaans calling wildly in the rain.

      Mokala

      January 4, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

During the storm I hid in the kitchen area that was dedicated to my campsite (no 4). Realizing that the storm was diminishing but would stay for a while I decided to go for a drive. What a drive, outside temperature about 21 and everything crispy clean. The frogs were going wild and the birds were out playing. The first sociable weaver nest I came to had a pair of Pygmy Falcons popping in and out. Road trip made!

For the rest, all I can say is if you haven’t been to Mokola I strongly suggest you go.

      Into Namibia

      October 8, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

After driving for an hour, we crossed the clean, well maintained and efficient border into Namibia. The name means “vast and empty” which we certainly were going to find out over the next week the true definition of those words! Lots of driving again today but it was broken up by a canoe paddle down the Orange River. We saw lots of birds and gorgeous scenery and stopped at a city with very, very small reed huts. The adults work at the vineyards along the Orange River, Namibia on the near side of the river and on the far side it is South Africa. We gave the kids two soccer balls, coloured pens and balloons and they sang a couple of songs for us. We stayed at a beautiful lodge, with vehicle decorations of old cars, trucks, tractors and much attention to detail in in rooms as well. We drove out to Fish Canyon which is the second largest canyon in the world. The sunset and rock formations were beautiful, although Tommy didn’t come with us because he was sick. On the drive back to the Lodge we saw some Oryx and then Sharon saw one at the Lodge.Read more

      Der letzte Wandertag

      June 23, 2017 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

      ☁️🌥 14°C

      On the road

      July 8, 2018 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Yesterday we left Betty's bay to head towards Natasha's Aunty's farm in Orania, near Hopetown. We stopped last night at a large town called Beauford West which is about half way to the farm, about 560kms from Betty's bay.
We stopped at a few places along the way, a famous wine and brandy tasting (Barrydale distillery). Then Diesel and Cream Cafe for lunch. This place was cool, step up as old dinner style with lots of old signs, motorcycles and cars, fuel pumps and vending machines.
The road from lunch to Beaufort West was through the mountains. Huge cut outs through the rock for the road, it dwarfed the car and made us feel very small. The road then opened up to the Small Karoo.
Karoo is SA type of desert, not much out here apart from sand, rock and small shrubs.

Today we were up early to hit the road. We want to arrive around lunch time. We won't be stopping much today

      Nächster Stop: Ganora Country House

      March 6, 2021 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      Lootsberg Pass

      September 26, 2017 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Read more

      Time to say goodbye

      October 2, 2016 in South Africa ⋅ 🌧 14 °C
