Tag 43 von Santiago nach Negreira

      June 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

      Etappe 30 - Negreira

      October 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

      Dauerregen seit Samstag.

      A Pena morning

      June 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

The morning started with scrumptious breakfast buffet, again lovingly prepared by Angelis

The Serene morning from the garden

We did have quite a late start, but Juan drove us to A Pena proper to the Camino marker so we can be on our way.
Without a doubt this was by far the best stay I've had through all my work on both Caminos

Allan, I just realized that in the past 43 days, you have traveled 5,000 k which is 3,106 miles. That is more miles than the width of the United States. You are amazing!

      6/29/22Reply
      Traveler

Have you actually WALKED that many miles? Or does the 5000 k include your flight from the US? (Even so, that is still amazing!!)

      6/29/22Reply
      Traveler

OK, so...the 5K would indeed be the whole trip incl the flight. the app starts tracking and counting the moment you activate the trip and since I activated in EWR the ticking started... at 3100 miles it woul beat PCT...🙃. That said the total distance of Camino Frances from St.Jean to Santiago de Compostela is about 790 km. considering that I did skip some sections, I would estimate my total mileage at about 670km give or take and by the end of Finisterre extension it will be additional 90 km

      6/29/22Reply
      Traveler

That's still about 500 miles -- way more than I could do. (Oh wait .. do I hear singing?)

      What an accomplishment

      June 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

My sweet wife on her 1st try did an astonishing 26km!!!
Needless to say she is tired but hopefully will rejuvenate nicely after a good night sleep.
We will attempt to hit the road perhaps slightly after 8:00am

If you refer to the maps these are oriented right to left which in a sense is correct since we are moving East to West.
The top map is competed and on the bottom one we currently are just below A Pena so that's the way point for reference.
You can see the contours of the path and marvel with me of her resilience as we obviously had to deal with some ups and downs but she conquered them all 👍❤

      Well done Pilgrim

      The way to Finisterre

      August 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

There are roughly 90k between Santiago and Finisterre. It's typically done in 3 or 4 days.
Jan was very much set on doing it in 3 days, and the idea of ~30k per day suited me. His idea was different, he wanted to do 35-30-25.
I had already booked a bed at Albergue Rectoral San Mamede da Pena. We left Santiago together, then he wanted to speed up, so I let him go and we would meet again for breakfast, at the first cafe on the way.
After breakfast, we walked together again until the biggest town we would pass through this day, Negreira. That's where we saw Nelly, but she was with another pilgrim in a cafe we didn't like, so we only spoke for 5 minutes and walked on, towards the river, in thehope we'd find somewhere to eat there. It was lunchtime. This town was also the last chance for some supermarket shopping for a couple of days. We found a supermarket before we found a nice cafe, and I proposed to buy a picnic lunch there, apart from the other supplies we needed.
As it turned out, the river did not have an open area for a picnic, but a park nearby was good enough. It had benches in the shade, and a water fountain.
After lunch, Jan wanted to go faster again, as he was planning to go farther than me. It was hot and we just wanted to get to our albergues.
He was walking faster, but also stopping more, so I kept catching up, and at some point I passed him.
I got to my albergue, settled in, and a bit later he was at the reception asking for a bed 😂
I had a feeling he might end up doing that, as it was getting a bit late in the afternoon and too hot to go on for another hour. It was definitely the best decision he could make because the albergue was great, and the dinner (set menu) was excellent value, delicious and very abundant.
At the dinner table we met most of the other guests - all new people for us.
The interesting thing about this extension to Finisterre is that now we were mixing with people who got to Santiago via different routes, and we could learn about them.
The pic shows a sample of what the landscape was like. Some of the walk was along the road, but a good part was in trails with good tree cover.

      A walk in the woods

      August 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

As I left Negreira I spotted this statue of a farther going on his pilgrimage while his wife sat behind, holding a toddler and his son trying to hold him back by the seams of his pants. A powerful image.

The sun rose as I climbed my first hill, and soon the landscape was bathed in red and warm rays. The path is mostly forest, so it is shady and cool, but the occasional clearing provides warmth and happiness.

15 more kilometers, 15 down, with the landscape flattening noticeably. This will be a good day.

Tag 55 von Santa Mariña nach Nájera

      June 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Der Tag heute war wieder sehr verregnet.
Aber trotzdem wunderschön und immer wieder überraschend.
Bei der Wahl meiner Albergue hate ich wieder ein glückliches Händchen.
      Mir geht's eigentlich richtig gut.
Man merkt allerdings das die Beine langsam auch nicht mehr so richtig wollen.
Morgen ist dannmein letzter Tag auf dem Camino.
Aber ich habe ja noch Morgen
      Mal schauen was noch passiert.

      Santiago to Castelo

      September 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Beautiful walk out of Santiago. There were horses and goats grazing, fields of corn, canopies of grapes, picturesque horreos (miniature granaries), and groves of fragrant eucalyptus trees, some forming tunnels of shade. I stopped at a cafe for another snack, empanada de manzanilla. So I actually had cheesecake for breakfast and apple pie for lunch. 😜☕️🥧 There was also a beautiful view of the cathedral in the distance when I looked back at Santiago. Plus I found a nice place to buy. Just a bit of a fixer-upper.Read more
