      Navarette to Azofra

      September 16 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Back to good spirits again. Magnificent walking today through lush farmland. A bit over 22km. It was grape harvest festival in Nájera that we passed through on the way. Ed had good day on the bike. Carried pack on his back instead of the rack. Azofra tiny village with wonderful municipale. We had our own room with beds not bunks & there was lovely outdoor area. The grapes were ripe & ready for picking. I think one of the photos is where they have been harvested & the plants are much smaller. We got paella for dinner in the local restaurant with local La Rioja wine & enjoyed it with friends I had met in Logroño. Delicious. Ed took his separately later. He doesn’t mix with pilgrims. Spends his time on his phone chatting to friends at home. He has also discovered they will sell him alcohol which is unfortunate…Read more

      Navarrete to Azofra

      September 5 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

It is so hard to start walking when it is raining. Then I remember that every step I take is one less step l have to walk tomorrow and that math sounds good 🙂
It also helps if you stop by a pastry shop and grab the best looking thing and save it for lunch. I am not above bribing myself.
The sun did come out for a couple seconds and I still found beauty.

Tonight I am staying in Azofra, discribed in my Camino book as: a tranquil village with a declining population of 250 owing much of its continuing existence to the camino. I am making a point to stay in these smaller villages. My hostel was actually made as a hostel and I have a room to myself! (It has 2 beds) And a heated floor! Thank you for all your prayers. I am positive they are the reason I am still perservering, even in the rain.

And to all my teacher friends, I have not forgotten that this is the first week of school. My prayers are with you, your students, and their families as you begin another year. I'm their in Spirit.

      Day 12-Azofra

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Short 11 mile day today. We left our hotel a little after 6am in order to finish walking early before the heat. It doesn't really get too hot here but you feel it when you're walking this much everyday. We stopped at the local restaurant that was, thankfully, open early for some breakfast and then we were on our way at 7am while it was still dark. Sunrise isn't until 8am here.

We stopped in Nájera for a snack and continued on to Azofra. Between those two towns were flies contstantly annoying us. We arrived in Azofra at noon and sat in the plaza for a couple of hours greeting pilgrims as they arrived. There are lots of flies here too. I'm not sure what's attracting them and I'm pretty sure it's not us.

The rest of the day will be spent strolling around town and having dinner.

Day 11 - Ventos to Azofra

      August 25 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today was a better day of walking. It was cool most of the day, much more enjoyable. Only one little climb out of a village that git us huffing a little. Still dealing with a head cold and sore Achilles but it was manageable today.

We mostly walk through vineyards today as the landscape is wine country. In a few spots it almost had a feel of Utah with red rock and desert plants. We came across several aqueduct irrigation systems for the vineyards. At one point they were using a tractors pto to run a pump.

Had a scare when Teresa rolled her ankle and hit the ground. She's okay, but we'll see how the ankle is tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a long day so we're sending our bags ahead to give our legs, her ankle and my Achilles somewhat of a break.

      D12- Azofra to Granon 22.8km

      May 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Although it was quiet and it was two beds to a room I had the worst sleep so far. I also slipped on the last two steps when I came downstairs and bruised my tail bone. After a breakfast of yoghurt and banana that I had picked up in the little grocery store the day before we headed off for the day. We left the albergue just before seven and as we left town we were greeted by a sea of poppies. We continued on with an easy 9km walk and arrived at the town of Ciruena. The book described this town as a ghost town and that’s exactly what we found. Apparently they built multiple apartment blocks, something to do with the golf club and most of the time they lay empty. The only other people we saw were pilgrims. We found Jacob’s Bar before leaving town and had our morning coffee here before continuing on for another 6km until we reached Santo Domingo de La Calzada. St Dominic dedicated his life to improving the route for pilgrims in the 11th century by building roads, bridges, a hospital and a church. It was lovely walking into these towns to the chiming of church bells. We walked around town for a while admiring the architecture, so many beautiful buildings and fountains. We stopped for lunch at a little cafe in the square, took our shoes off and rested our weary legs. After lunch we headed towards Granon where we were staying for the night. The gravel path was lined with wild flowers and the scenery just beautiful with fields of wheat and barley. We stayed in accommodation near the Church of John the Baptist in a three storey home that had been turned into an albergue for pilgrims. There was bunks and beds everywhere but it was cool and quiet inside due to the thick stoned walls.Read more

      7. DAY | 37 km

      May 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Day 11 - Navarette to Azofra

      June 1 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The walk today was 23kms and a very pleasant meander through vineyards and farmland. 1hr in, I had a delish anti-inflammatory smoothie and a good cuddle with a border-collie called 'Win' 🐾💙

We went through a village called Najera and some fellow Aussies insisted we visit a very unique National monument called Monasterio de Santa Maria la Real, where the mausoleums for Kings and Infants way back from the 10th century are located! This place was incredible. The history here was just awe-inspiring!

Then onwards, 6kms to Azofra, where upon entering the village, the cutest scene played out in front of us.... (see video 🐾)

There were only 2 restaurants here and a pretty limited selection. The 1st we looked at had yummy pizzas pictured on the menu, but when the owner proceeded towards the freezer to pull them out, we opted for the other restaurants' paella instead 🥘.... but I think this was also a microwave meal! 🤔

Accommodation tonight is clean and nice, so off to sleep in broad daylight - at 9 pm - I go! 😴

      Testing the limits

      October 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Of my fitness. Almost 50k steps (35km), more than half on hard surface and all that on sandals.
No blisters. A bit of dull pain, but that's to be expected.
I left Logroño at 7 am and arrived here in the middle of nowhere at 3 pm. Took only very short breaks, as this was not much of a scenic walk. The highlights were yesterday's Pinchos.
Watch the video of the parrot. Funny.

      10. Etappe nach Azofra

      March 30 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

A my cieszymy się młodym lokalnym ubiegłorocznym winem, którego owoce rok temu podjadaliśmy💜Circle of life💞Read more
