      9. Etappe: Nájera —> Santo Domingo

      April 9 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

      Navarrete to Azofra

      May 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

I had a great night’s sleep. Albergue el Cantaro was perfect.

We are now in La Rioja which is a wine area. And there are vineyards everywhere. And rolling hills. So it’s been quite pretty.

Stopped in Najera and bought some pastries to eat in the park along the river for lunch. It was very busy with lots of families out as it was Saturday afternoon. There was an interesting display of weapons and uniforms by the military, I think it was a recruitment drive.

I am spending the night in the municipal albergue and all the rooms have only two single beds in each which hopefully will give me another good night’s sleep.

      Walk to Azofra

      September 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

We made it to Azofra today, walked 12 miles, found this art project leaving Ventosa this morning it was different heads... sun picture did not do it the justice it deserves. We passed lots and lots of vineyards again but found a few corn fields scattered throughout.Read more

      Day 12-Azofra

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Short 11 mile day today. We left our hotel a little after 6am in order to finish walking early before the heat. It doesn't really get too hot here but you feel it when you're walking this much everyday. We stopped at the local restaurant that was, thankfully, open early for some breakfast and then we were on our way at 7am while it was still dark. Sunrise isn't until 8am here.

We stopped in Nájera for a snack and continued on to Azofra. Between those two towns were flies contstantly annoying us. We arrived in Azofra at noon and sat in the plaza for a couple of hours greeting pilgrims as they arrived. There are lots of flies here too. I'm not sure what's attracting them and I'm pretty sure it's not us.

The rest of the day will be spent strolling around town and having dinner.

      Day 11 Navarrete to Zofra

      October 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

We wanted to get on the Camino a little earlier today. But the couple that ran the Albergue were late opening so we couldn't get our laundry to finish packing up. They probably didn't get enough sleep either because the fireworks, music and festival activities went on until 2:00 am. We walked about 3.5 miles to Ventosa and stopped for breakfast. We enjoyed our continued journey through rolling hills and vineyards in the Rioja region.Read more

    • Navarrete to Alesanco

      September 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today was another early start about an hour and a half before dawn, after breakfasting on some things we bought in the supermarket.

8km of walking found us in Ventosa where we found much needed coffee and croissants.

Today was cloudy so we were spared the hot sun after noon.

Another 8km found us in Nájera where we stopped for lunch.

So far we’d been walking almost entirely through vineyards, some of them very large, extending over the horizon. We noticed the older vines are very sturdy and self supporting.

From Nájera it was a somewhat unpleasant 8km trudge on bitumen roads to our pensión in Alesanco. It is slightly off the Camino but it had a room available for us.

We walked to the pub in the center of town and drank a couple of radlers (beer with lemon, like a shandy) at an outside table and watched the passing parade. It is a very rural town and there was a constant parade of tractors pulling big bins of just-harvested grapes to one of the town’s wine makers.

Right on 7pm it seemed as though all the townspeople descended on the pub to chat, play cards, have a drink or a snack. We couldn’t find a restaurant open so made dinner with the pub snacks, called pinchos.

Back at our pensión we met a young German couple with 12 month old child who are cycling the Camino with a tow-along baby carriage. They had started from their home in Leipzig. They told us they had previously ridden from Perth to Melbourne in Australia.

    • Day 14 - Navarrete to Azofra - 23km

      September 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The day without my backpack was a pretty good day. The forecasted rain didn’t materialize until now (it is almost 4pm). In fact, the afternoon got a little sunny and hot for the last 6km.

I woke up at 6am to my alarm. I wanted to be on the road by 7am at the latest so I could get ahead of the rain. It was still dark so once I left Navarrete, I needed to put on my headlamp again for about 15 minutes.

The province of La Roja (which I am in now), is known for their wines and I feel like the last two days has been almost all vineyards. I am not complaining though, the grapes are beautiful to look at, especially on the rolling hills.

I took an option today to go to ventosa. It is about an additional 1km, but it had a cafe and a bathroom which I desperately needed. It was 7km before we reached the cafe and I had my first rest. I was definitely walking much faster without my big backpack and wondered if it would catch up to me at the end of the day. After I used the facilities and nourished myself with tortilla and Coke Zero, I was on my way.

I reached Najera around noon. I stopped there and had a longer break as I had 6km to go and the rain didn’t look like it was threatening at all. Most people will be staying in this larger city, but Jörg and I weren’t fans the first time around, so I decided to not stay this time.

I arrived in Afofra around 2pm and my backpack wasn’t here. I wasn’t too worried as I have an AirTag inside the bag and it said it was about 8kms away. It showed up about 10 minutes later which was great. I showered, washed clothes and headed into town for food. The restaurant wouldn’t feed me. They said they have a pilgrim meal at 6pm so I went across the street to the supermarket, which was the size of my bedroom, only a few people could fit at a time. I picked up some snacks for the trail tomorrow and enjoyed a small bag of plain potato chips.

Now I am just waiting for my laundry to dry and the pilgrims meal. I am going to take my backpack with me tomorrow. As much as it was easier to walk, I missed it. The day pack I have is only built for carrying things in the evening, no ventilation so my back got hot and wet real fast! In fact, my back started to hurt a little and I wondered if it was the smaller backpack as well, as all the weight would be on the shoulders instead of the hips.

I haven’t made a reservation for tomorrow but I am not too worried. I am only going 15km and I am 6km ahead of the rest of the people who are going to try and stay there. I get to see the church with the chickens, but I will tell you about that tomorrow.

      Kraina winorośli ❤️

      September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

A my cieszymy się młodym lokalnym ubiegłorocznym winem, którego owoce rok temu podjadaliśmy💜Circle of life💞Read more

      Day 12 Azofra to Granon

      October 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

We got a good start this morning. Found a nice little park to "lounge" in just before Ciruena. Then we headed to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. We had a delicious lunch...we shared some Calamari, Kim had a lovely goat cheese salad. Julie had salad with tuna, and I had a red pepper rellano stuffed shrimp and monkfish. We visited the church of St. John the Baptist and learned about the legend of the miraculous chicken and why the church is affectionately called the " Chicken church" and live chickens are kept there. We stayed in Granon at Albergue Carresquedo.Read more

    • Day 11

Nájera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

      April 12 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

149 miles walked. 351 to go.

Do you miss carbs? Or, do you crave carbs but wish you could just gorge yourself without any added weight consequences? Have I got a plan for you! All you have to do is walk an average of 18 miles a day in the sweltering heat on the Camino de Santiago and you can eat whatever carbs you desire, and sweat out whatever beverages you fancy, without consequence!*

Seriously though, I’m eating ALL THE THINGS and simply just have to in order to replenish my body with energy to be able to either recover from my walk, or prepare to conquer the next day. So, I’ve had more bread in the past two weeks than I’ve consumed in the past year. The hunger pangs are real, and this whole siesta time for businesses closing up shop in the afternoon and restaurants not opening until 8:30 is making me crazy! Imma bout to strap a loaf of bread to my backpack and open up shop on the Camino for those of us who need a carb fix.

But that’s been the yeast of my problems (pun very much intended). Through training over the last several months and these first couple weeks of Camino walking, I’ve worn out my insoles. I thankfully found a sporting good store last night and bought new insoles and the difference is night and day. I think I may actually be able to pull off the 351 miles left!

This is the point in the trip where everyone is showing off their blisters to one another. I’ve seen some gnarly ones… one the size of a silver dollar on the heel of someone. Another where the blister was long and wrapped itself around the top of the big toe and down between and below the next toe. Another had so many bandaids of his feet, you could barely see any skin showing. Ouch! I’m not able show off any battle wounds, cause I’ve got none. I’m holding up. For now.

Carb loaded. Vino blanco filled. Sleep deprived. Till tomorrow…
