      A Scout is Helpful

      This bridge that predates the Roman era, I saw in a display in the museum in Melidé, so I wanted to snap a picture. As I packed up, an older woman approached the bridge and stopped. She and I have been passing each other for five days. She looked at the bridge and then at the creek and started to cry. I asked, “Are you OK?” “Le Pont C’est tres deficile.” “The bridge is very difficult.” Pas problem, Granmere. Ici”. “No problem Grandma, here”. I got myself to the other side, took off my pack, put my poles down and went back over, where a line was forming with four Spanish bike riders who started immediately hollering. I said, “Uno momento por la abuela!” I signaled for her to take off her pack. She got wide eyed and almost started to say no, but then unbuckled and gave me her pack and poles. I held her hand and we inched across in small careful steps. She got a little tipsy and these two guys immediately hopped into the shin deep water on either side and steadied her. “Merci monsieur, merci.” “De ríen, Granmere. Aujeudui, nous allons avec Dieu”. “It’s nothing Grandma. Today we go with God”

      Day 36

      Well today was wet and misty, but it was a shorter day and there was no wind which made such a massive difference.. also it wasn’t anywhere near as chilly as yesterday.
      After another substantial breakfast I was on my way.
      Due to staying slightly off route yesterday and having found the place by accident, I wasn’t overly sure of my way back to it.. amazingly enough I did so really quickly, but by shear luck.
      There didn’t seem as many people today, although I think possibly they sensibly just left later to miss the bulk of the rain.. I wished I’d done the same after hanging around wet waiting to check in.
      As it’s forecast to be really wet tomorrow, especially first thing, I might well wait an extra hour before setting off.
      It was a pleasant undulating section today, though I didn’t take much in the way of pictures as it was too much of a hassle to get my phone out from inside my waterproof’s.. poor excuse I know , but true..
      Due to my early arrival, I sort of café hopped for a bit drinking cups of coffee and tea..
      My accommodation here is good, nice big room and fabulous shower.. that was big bonus points today.
      It stopped raining mid afternoon so I went out for a bit of a wander around, although it’s a pretty small place with not much to see!
      My meal this evening was great.. paella!!!! Yay!!!!
      Well, it’s now only two walks and three sleeps until I go home.. I got a little bit excited getting my boarding pass notification today .. it’s the small things 😂😂      Read more

      A Salceda

      Pojawiają się pomału uczucia, zadowolenie z dojścia do celu jak i żalu, że się to już kończy. Tęsknoty za bliskimi i tęsknoty za brakiem odpowiedzi na wszystkie pytania. Szczęścia z uniesienia choć jednego kamienia i jednej dobrej odpowiedzi, którą się usłyszy i jednocześnie zadumanie nad ogromem nowych pytań i nowych kamieni, które chciało by się oddać w dobre ręce.
      Było dzisiaj dość dużo bardzo pomarszczonej drogi, ale na szczęście na krótkich odcinkach. Przechodziliśmy koło paru zewnętrznie ładnych kościółkach, ale były one niestety zamknięte. Nasza grupa wędrująca nam się powiększyła. Większość trasy spędziliśmy w piątkę tzn Kasia, AJ, Anna, Judy i ja. Dochodząc do Arzua, przechodzi się koło fontanny, o której legenda mówi, że leczy wszystko, miałem ochotę się w niej wykąpać.
      Arzua po za tym, że jest miastem przemysłowym to słynie z wyrobu pysznych serów, także jeden cały okrąg został pobrany, mam nadzieję, że uda się go dowieźć do domu.
      Śpimy w miejscu gdzie jest doskonała kuchnia. Miałem golonkę, która była chyba najlepsza jaką kiedykolwiek miałem. Jutro ostatnia noc przed Santiago.      Read more

      Arzua to Pedrouzo

      Can not believe we only have one more day of walking on the Camino Frances and under 20 km left to go.
      We started off this morning in the pouring rain and quite a bit of wind so not ideal walking conditions but us hardy souls knew the show must go on. It quite dark at 8 am now so we don't want to leave too early and we are not dealing with the heat of the Meseta
      The paths are becoming increasingly crowded with pilgrims but we can not complain as we are part of the crowd! Although there are at times too many in the cafes there is also a festive vibe now. I think we all know the end is near and the challenge of the 780 km walk has almost been achieved.
      Luckily Brian's spider bite did not get worse overnight and armed with panadol and a good antihistamine cream he managed the 20 km walk.
      The day did improve and was again very pretty and very rural. I must say when we are walking in forests of gum trees and the wind is fierce I am very happy to move along quickly.
      We had the most delicious lunch today. The boys had hamburgers which they declared the best they had eaten. I had a delicious blue cheese tomato salad. This area is famous for the soft cheeses they make plus their octopus dishes.
      Pedrouza doesn't look to be the most exciting town and our window is looking out to cows!
      Shoes are holding out just and with the rain and a bit of mud they are not overly waterproof.
      We still continue to meet different interesting people every day and re meet up with others. Lee went up to 3 Sth African walkers and quietly stated that the All Blacks will beat SA in the final! This created great shrieks of protests and laughs.
      Today there was a group of about 6 blind people all with guides walking on the track. There seems to be a great army of volunteers who support the disabled on the Camino.
      The wind is blowing outside but the Spanish wine, octopus, and cheeses are waiting for us!

      Etappe 32 Palas de Rai -Arzua

      Nachdem ich heut Nacht lang nicht in den Schlaf gekommen bin, weil ich mal wieder gefroren habe, sind wir heute erst später gestartet! Gestärkt mit einen Kaffee und ein Tostada verließen wir 8.30 Uhr die Albergue in voller Regenmontur.
      Es war eine Regenwahrscheinlichkeit von 100 Prozent vorausgesagt für heute ! Nach 30 Tage Sonne darf es auch mal regnen!

      Beim anziehen unserer Regenhosen, freute ich mich darüber offensichtlich einige Pfunde verloren zu haben, denn meine Hose war mir jetzt zu groß. Janine hingegen war enttäuscht das die Hose strammer saß als zu Beginn. Wie das Michelinmännchen kämpfte sie sich den Berg nach oben, immer die Angst die Hose könnte platzen. Auf die Idee das wir eventuell die Hosen vertauscht haben, kamen wir erst 3 km später im Dorf als Janine fast an der Treppe scheiterte. Leider habe ich doch nicht so viel abgenommen sondern leider eine zu große Hose getragen. Ruckzuck tauschten wir die Hosen auf der Straße und schmissen uns fast vor Lachen weg.

      Die Geschichte teilten wir dann auch 6 km später beim ersten Kaffee mit Antje und Domeniko.
      Da wir eine längere Strecke vor uns hatten, zogen wir gleich weiter. Allerdings nur bis zum nächsten Kaffee in dem wir Paul trafen.

      Der Weg führte uns heute durch wunderschöne alte Eukalyptus Wälder, die wir schon von weitem rochen.
      Immer wieder überquerten wir Bäche, trafen die ein oder andere Kuh, und auch so manchen Hobbypilger mit viel zu kleinen Rucksack und aufdringlichen Parfüm.

      Aus den für heute geplanten 28 km, wurden dann überraschender Weise doch irgendwie 31km, in denen wir 10km bei strömendem Regen zurücklegen mussten. Gott sei Dank haben wir uns sehr gute Regenkleidung gekauft, die überraschender Weise doch so einiges an Wasser durchließen !

      Bis auf die Knochen durchnässt kamen wir in Arzua an. Eingecheckt, heiß geduscht, Jacken trocken geföhnt, Zeitung in die Schuhe gestopft, Kleider in den Trockner geschmissen und ab in die Stadt.

      Nach langem Suchen nach etwas essbarem, erbarmte sich noch ein italienisches Restaurant uns zu bekochen..

      Jetzt sind wir bereit fürs Bett, fix und fertig und ein Schlafplatz direkt neben der Heizung Gesichert!

      Durch den anhaltenden Regen, haben sich mittlerweile Schwimmhäute zwischen unseren Zehen gebildet.      Read more

      ״חצי שעה באופניים״

      נזכרתי שאמש דיברנו על מועד החזרה של כל אחד לארצו, ואם יש אילוצים כלשהם. אן-מארי אמרה שאחיה יתחתן ב-10 ביוני והיא צריכה עד אז להגיע, ומיד הוסיפה שהחתונה קרובה לביתה, ״רק חצי שעה באופניים״. אצלם האופניים הם פרקטיים ופונקציונליים באופן מפליא, וזה היה מדהים בעיניי שהיא מעריכה מרחקים בזמן-רכיבה ולא בזמן-הליכה או נסיעה ברכב, וגם שהיא מוכנה לרכב חזרה הביתה אחרי חתונת אחיה!Read more
