      Unexpected extension

      August 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I was sleepy the whole morning. There were kids playing and talking outside my window last night, until after midnight, and I got up at 5.
I had the best breakfast so far, and it was 'home' made: fruit salad with natural yoghurt and avo on toast. Some albergues lend themselves to food preparation more others.
We left Calzadilla de los Hermanillos and continued on the Via Trajana. The walk was still mostly flat, with gentle undulations. The fields had corn, wheat and sunflowers, and the occasional tree plantation.
The track was an ancient Roman road, which in parts has been conserved just like it was 2,000 years ago.
The target today was Mansilla de las Mulas, about 25k. The morning was relatively cool, cloudy, with a couple of light showers. It was a good temperature for walking.
When we got to Mansilla, however, the good albergue was full 😣. The other private albergue had more negative reviews than positive, and the municipal was closed.
We started looking for other options and found room at a nice albergue 2 more villages to the west. This extended the walk to 32k, and the last hour or two were in the afternoon heat.
We were planning to walk to the last village before León tomorrow, and arrive early in León the next day, to be able to spend time exploring the city. But with today's extension, we're just 1 more village away from León, so we'll get there tomorrow.

      A bit less dampness

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Went rogue and took an alternative more remote route and ended up looking like sodden rats at a teeny albergue with just one other wom staying there. But things only went up from there as it had a FIREPLACE and we cooked some delish lentil bolognaise + glühwein (mulled wine) courtesy of Marisa's ingenius ideaRead more

      Best of Sahagún

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I loved the door to the old city, and I equally loved the confitería 😋
I had a smoothie with a piece of cheesecake, just because it looked more substantial than the choc mousse slice... and other various things that I wished I could take away...Read more

      Day 20: Terradillos a Calzadilla

      May 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Last night someone in the albergue had some sort of profoundly distressing nightmare, and was talking and wailing throughout the night. There was coughing, there was snoring, such is albergue life.

I was up and ready to walk by 5.45, and I made my way out of the albergue. As I turned the first corner I ran into Hodges and his friend Alex, and I walked with them a while. Alex works in Hastings for a zero waste food organisation, and is from Romania. So many interesting people walking this way.

I walk with them a while but I am craving solitude. After my double dinner and lunch with Jim, I’m ready to walk alone and I head off on my own. A beautiful sunrise today, and I decide this is my favourite part of the day.

I stop in a lovey little town for coffee. I run into Bernard, and Austrian who is unhappy about the reservation situation. This is very much a Camino topic, the frustration we feel at having to reserve ahead too far or at all. He is planning on buying a mat to sleep on, so that he is able to sleep outside. His main motivation is to feel relaxed and free. I reflect on this as I have also made reservations more often that not. As this is an experience I may not repeat soon, am I ensuring that I get the most out of it?

I keep going by myself and indulge in a little music. I feel energised by this and get to Sahagun in good spirits. Here I have a coffee and some cake, and officially mark that I am halfway to Santiago! I buy a certificate for 3 euros (It’s on its way to you Chris!) so I am feeling happy. The best part of the day for me so far is before 11 in the morning. This is confirmed when someone runs out onto the street to hand me a small card with a blessing on it. The people of Sahagun are friendly, and I feel confident and like a real pilgrim.

Once I leave here I walk alone, and I decide to take the older Via Romana route, which is longer and more remote. I figure I might have some time to reflect, and I meet Pien, a woman from the Netherlands who walks with me the whole route to the alternate end point of Calzadilla. I learn she is a recent PHD graduate with a new job and a new husband, she loves her life and feels very blessed. We talk about things we have in common and things we don’t, and the heat of the day doesn’t feel so extreme. It is however over 30 degrees and it is uncomfortable, hot and dusty.

I arrive at my spot for the night and run into Hodges and my German friend from yesterday. The Albergue here is very nice, and I have an actual bed. No bunk. A bed! And with a TOWEL. I am delighted and I fall asleep for an hour before dinner, which is shared in the company of all I have met in the last few days.

Tomorrow I walk for 17km with no stop for coffee again, so I am putting my coffee teabags to good use (thanks dad!) and supporting all of the early risers aiming to beat the heat of the day.

      Signing off for now!

      68. Wandertag

      June 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      1000 Fotos

      October 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Read more

Calzadilla to Mansilla de las Mulas - th

      June 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

As far as I could see there were only the six pilgrims at our Albergue Via Trajana walking the Via Romana today. And of them I only saw two, Stephanie the digital nomad originally from Germany and Dominic from France. Rachel and I had the road to ourselves - silent apart from birdsong.
The road was not nearly as difficult as we had been led to believe. When we were walking on a Roman road earlier in the Camino it was made up of very large cobble stones but this was much smoother - I think better preserved as the top layer of smaller pebbles was mainly still there and in parts there was also a sandy layer making it smoother and softer on the feet.
So it was another pretty long walk and, of course, very straight, but beautiful, deserted and quiet.
We have had an amazing day of weather - no rain or thunderstorms for almost the first time on the Camino. The rain usually starts just after we arrive at our destination of the day but it is a pity that often we can’t sit out in the evenings. Today was different and it is still warm and sunny now.
After arriving in Mansilla de las Mulas, Rachel and I found coffee and waited for the others to arrive. Sadly no iced coffee which was what I really needed - the caffeine but cold! But so good to sit down. Rachel was developing blisters and I was really tired.
Unfortunately when the others arrived they had to get on the bus to Leon straight away as there wasn’t another one until 4 so I didn’t get to see them before they left.
We found out today that Caroline has had a stomach upset - I felt terrible that I wasn’t with her and I’m amazed that she managed to walk after being sick all night. She was well looked after by Nick and Paul tho.
So then I was on my own. I found some more cherries (the Spanish cherries are amazing - I’ve been buying them almost every day) and went to check in at my Albergue.
Then went to find the swimming spot I had been promised. It was amazing. My first wild swim on the Camino and worth the wait. There was even a little beach to sit on.
I really love Mansilla - it seems to be a friendly laid back town - and I’m pleased I chose to stay here rather than moving on to the city.
Didn’t go out to eat tonight as thought it might be a bit weird on my own but I guess if I was lucky enough to be able to do this again I wouldn’t be guaranteed a companion so would have to get used to that!!
Planning an early night - once I’ve found an audiobook for the walk along the road into Leon tomorrow.

      To Calzadilla de los Hermanillos

      September 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We had a relaxing walk to Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos today. It is an alternate path that follows an old Roman Road. Along our walk, we met Sue from New York. She’s walking the Camino alone and will meet her husband in Santiago. Chatting with her made the walk go by quickly, and we found out we were staying at the same place - Casa El Cura.🙂

I can’t say enough about how nice this place is! Gemma and Leo are wonderful hosts! The home is filled with old family photos and antiques and Gemma took the time to tell us about her family and items in the home. Then, Leo prepared a delicious dinner that had all of the guests raving about the food. We finished the evening with shots of liqueur for everyone and Leo and Gemma posed in a picture with us all. 📸

Tomorrow, we will head back to the regular route and walk to Mansilla de las Mulas. I can’t believe we are almost to León.🙂

      Tag 7 geschafft

      June 15, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Read more

    • A friendly face from home!

      May 29, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

My friend Marcella emailed me yesterday to let me know that Nan Schulman from our Camino group in Oregon was volunteering as a hospitalera "somewhere on the Meseta". It turned out that the town she's in was a good stopping point for me today.

This is a very quiet town of about 150 people. Quite a few of the buildings are built of straw and adobe.
