      Cardenuela-Riopico

      May 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Brauch Energie und will meine Ruhe

      Burgos

      October 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We had a relatively short uneventful walk into the city of Burgos this morning. Through a couple of small towns, with nothing open early Saturday morning.

There are several "Camino" routes routes into the city, we chose the slightly longer river path. It was very nice dirt path next to the river. But it quickly grew into another Pedestrian/Cycling super-highway. About 6 kms of parallel cycling and walking jogging paths. Really cool.

We got to the hotel too early, so we walked around old town a little bit. Saw a church just out side the city gate, which was preparing for a wedding. Listened to the musicians practicing.

      Day 15 Atapuerca to Burgos

      October 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

From Atapuerca we had a bit of a rocky climb which leveled off at this large cross. We walked through a few small villages today, had a break in Cardenuela Riopoco...best tortilla so far. There are two routes approaching Burgos, the river route is the preferred way, but because of some construction it was not well marked and many of missed the entrance. The alternative was a long walk on pavement through the industrial outskirts of the city and the crowded downtown commerce area. The light at the end of the tunnel did not disappoint, as Kim had booked a room in the historic Norte y Londres Hotel. It is the oldest hotel on the Camino and has been beautifully restored and is located very near the Cathedral Santa Maria. We are spending an extra day here to explore the sites and rest the dogs.Read more

      26. Etappe: Burgos (20 km)

      November 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Ich hab richtig gut geschlafen! Sogar fast verschlafen!

      63. Wandertag

      May 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

😅😎🥱☹️Read more

      Day 14, Ages to Burgos

      June 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

I found today quite a challenge. The early morning walking was a joy, as it always seems to be. It was a sharp, bright start with wild flowers galore in the hedgerows. As Roz, one of our Camino group put it, how are we expected to walk with all this natural beauty to photograph?
However, I found the second half of the walk harder. It wasn’t difficult in terms of gradient but the approach to cities seems to be the hardest part of the Camino. There were two routes into Burgos and we took the better one which skirts the river, but it still seemed to take forever. And my blisters remain a bit of a nuisance. However, entering the city by the Santa Maria arch was stupendous and the cathedral breathtaking. We stopped for fizzy water opposite the cathedral with Roz and met Rachel, Clint and Jo (Rachel’s walking companion).
Fiona and I checked into our hotel. On the plus side, it is in a wonderful location and our room has a great view of the cathedral. However, it was unbearably hot and impossible to relax in. I also discovered that my sketchers flip flops were missing and, despite calling last night’s albergue, they appear to have disappeared. Given the fragile state of my feet I was a bit distraught to have lost them and extremely unrelaxed by the sauna-level of heat in our room.
We found a vegetarian restaurant which did lovely vegan food. Despite eating well, I was still feeling a bit miserable. An evening out with a jolly group of fellow pilgrims helped considerably and I came back to the (slightly) cooler room a lot happier than I’d left it. Tomorrow we plan to visit the cathedral and I would like to go to the Museum of Human Evolution. I gather this was established following the discovery of the earliest humanoid life in one of the villages we walked through this morning.

      Atapuerca to Burgos

      October 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

We had a 20 km day today, neither of us had any difficulties, so that was good! We left Atapuerca when it was still dark, although just barely. Got some nice pictures of the sunrise as we were crossing the hill above Burgos. After we got near Burgos, we had to walk 7 km around the airport and then along the river before we got into town. We don’t have any pictures from that because it was hot and we were tired at that point.
When we arrived in Burgos, we saw there was a Ren Fair going on, although different than the kind of Ren Fair that we have stateside. After taking a nap, we went out to see the evening and enjoyed watching the children and families play and eat in the streets and alleys and plazas until quite late at night.
