      Da wir gestern unterwegs nicht zum Einkaufen gekommen sind (Ostermontag), ist das Frühstück bis auf Kaffee/Tee heute ausgefallen. Darum kamen wir ein wenig hungrig in der Stadt an, fürs Mittagessen war es etwas zu früh, zum frühstücken aber schon zu spät. Zu unserem Glück konnten wir im Café Iruña ein paar Pintxos und Bier bekommen.
      In dem Café von 1888 (Das erste Geschäft der Stadt mit elektrischem Licht.) war Hemingway Stammgast, und so steht er im abgetrennten, kleineren Bereich des Cafés heute immer noch an der Bar.

      Die Altstadt von Pamplona ist überschaubar und Anfang Juli, beim "San Fermin" (Wo man sich von Stieren durch die Strassen jagen lassen kann.) sicherlich sehr überlaufen.

      Enttäuscht waren wir (nicht nur vom Wetter) von einer kleinen Bäckerei, die im Internet sehr gelobt wurde. Auch, dass die Menschen draußen Schlange standen war ein gutes Zeichen. Wir haben eine Auswahl an Gebäck gekauft, und vielleicht sind wir einfach zu verwöhnt, aber ich behaupte, ich hätte es besser gebacken.      Read more

      Day 5 - Rest day in Pamplona
      Today I had a rest day. Or so I thought. But I ended up walking 10 to 12 km throughout the day. I visited a beautiful church! A famous Catholic in Pamplona called “Catedral de Santa María la Real de Pamplona”. So beautiful, as Catholic churches are! I also shopped for a bag to send some of my overpacking to Santiago to wait for me. It was a nice break.Read more

      Nach der Stierkampfarena war noch das Museum von Navarra angesagt. Interessant, leider auch hier nur spanisch und wenig englisch. Ärgere mich, dass ich nie spanisch gelernt habe, zumindest viele Grundbegriffe.
      Mittags muss eine Stärkung sein. Pintxos sind in Pamplona mit einem kühlen Blonden ein Muss. Einfach lecker!!!
      Zum Tagesausklang gab es dann ein leckeres Schinkenbaquette mit einem Bier. Ein alles in allem gelungener Tag gespickt mit viel Sehenswürdigkeiten und Kultur.
      Auf Wiedersehen Pamplona!!!
      Morgen beginnt unsere vierte Etappe. Wir freuen uns darauf!

      Day 5-Pamplona

      Wow, today caught me by surprise. I woke up feeling good with nothing hurting. The path was supposed to be pretty flat but there were some steep climbs. Our albergue packed us a breakfast that was enough for breakfast and lunch so we ended up not stopping to rest along the way. We just snacked as we walked. Big mistake, as I hobbled into Pamplona 11 miles later.

      Before getting into Pamplona we took a detour to a church that let us go into the bell tower to ring the bell. The weather got pretty hot after that so we pulled out our fashionable sun umbrellas. The Brits we walked with were melting and said they were going to buy umbrellas in Pamplona.

      We had dinner with the Aussies and watched locals dancing in the Plaza. By the time the night was over, my aches and pains of the day were gone but nonetheless I'm looking forward to our rest day tomorrow.      Read more

      Pamplona-pre Camino

      Pretty chill day, not weather-wise (which was pretty warm). We made our way to Pamplona via train, which was a very comfortable ride. We saw several pilgrims on the train (there's a certain "look" about us). Once we arrived, we spent the afternoon exploring the old part of the city and walked the famous route of the running of the bulls. I'm fascinated by the architecture of the midieval, gothic San Saturnino church. I post alot about food, but I'm into the history of our surroundings as well. After late evening pintxos, we got drenched in a thunderstorm. Luckily, we only had to run through it for a quarter mile.Read more

      Very quiet on the streets this morning. Public holiday here, grabbed a paper map, went old school and set off on a walk around the "old town". Love the quietness of it all this morning- easing me in! Just beautiful. Come back to organise for tomorrow- heading to the start of El Camino, will head out this evening for more adventure!Read more

      Twenty four hours in Pamplona. We walked in to Pamplona around 3pm yesterday and left around the same time this afternoon, by bus to Jaca.

      Pamplona holds significant memories for me and for The French. My first time here was on Day 3 of my first Camino - the Camino Frances - in 2011. My second time was with my dear friend and Camino ‘amiga’ Jill when we walked the Camino Frances together in 2013.

      My third time was in May 2014, after walking about 900 kms from Le Puy en Velay. The last 10 days or so I’d walked most of the time with a Frenchman. Pamplona was my last stop before returning to Australia. He was walking on to Santiago. We had dinner at Cafe Iruna, along with two Swiss pilgrims. I wished The Frenchman and the Swiss pilgrims a buen camino for their continuing journey. And did not imagine I’d see any of them again.

      My fourth time in Pamplona was in May 2016, again after walking about 900 kms, this time on the Camino Arles and Aragones - and with The Frenchman. It was exactly two years to the day since that first evening at Cafe Iruna. A lot had happened in that two years.

      When we arrived in Pamplona yesterday afternoon, after dropping off our backpacks at our hostal, our first stop was Plaza del Castillo to enjoy an apero at Cafe Iruna in the late afternoon sunshine - Spanish way.

      Day 5 - Olague to Pamplona, 25 kms

      We arrived in Pamplona around 3pm today, having walked under blue skies for the first time since we set out from Bayonne five days ago.

      As promised, Isabel came to the albergue in Lantz at 8am to take us by road to Olague. It took all of 5 minutes but saved me the prospect of that knee deep river crossing. I’d had enough water. We were definitely ready for a dry day feeling the sun on our faces. We thanked Isabel for all her kindness to us. She wished us a ‘Buen Camino’ and we were on our way.

      The day was wonderfully uneventful. Sure, some mud and large puddles to navigate but an otherwise easy walk. We even had the luxury of a lunch stop at the 15 km mark in the delightful village of Souraren, where the cafe / bar was open! We finally got to eat our emergency rations, that we had carried most of the Way, and the remainder of the fruit Isabel had given us for breakfast. And then went into the bar and ordered a cafe con leche for me and a neste for the French. Talk about the high life.

      We had 10 kms left to walk. At the town of Trinidad de Arre, just 5 kms before Pamplona, thé Camino Baztan joins thé much busier Camino Frances. Having walked such a quiet path for the past five days, we decided not to cross the lovely old stone bridge into Trinidad to join the many more pilgrims on the Frances, but to continue walking by the river on to Pamplona. ❤️      Read more

      Day 16 Larassoana to Pamplona, taxi

      This update comes from our comfortable hotel room in the heart of Pamplona old town, home for today and tomorrow. I have a sore right knee - too sore to walk for now. I’m not entirely sure of the cause, but I think it was through over stretching. I’ve been vigilant with stretching ankles, calves and legs generally, particularly to prevent shin splints which I am prone to. All was going well, with no problems since we began walking on the 1st.

      On Friday night in SJPP, I was lying in bed extending my legs when I felt a twinge behind my right knee. Ouch, I thought, that was probably a bit too much of a stretch, but I didn’t give it much more thought. The next morning when we set out at 7am for the Napoleon Route across The Pyrenees, my knee felt a bit dodgy but I soon warmed up and I hoped all would be well. Two days and more than 50 kms later …

      We decided to take a taxi the 16 kms to Pamplona this morning - not as easy as it sounds to get a taxi from Larrasoana, but we worked it out and arrived by 9.30. Some great good fortune with our hotel. We’ve stayed here before - in May this year. We arrived and told our sorry tale to the very kind senora. Did they have a room for two nights and is there any possibility that it would be available now (check in is usually at 3-00)? She told us it may be possible as yesterday they were not full. She did some nifty work on her booking system and, voila, we were in our room by 10.

      Then a short walk (hobble for me) for desayuno at a nearby cafe, a visit to the farmicia, and back to the hotel - time for me to rest. We are both hoping that taking two days here will do the trick.

      The French has been wonderfully supportive and patient, as always. And while I rest up, he’s going to take the opportunity to do all our laundry. That’s a silver lining for sure. The other is that I’ve surprised myself at how unfazed I am by this setback. Not at all like me. Especially suggesting a two day break rather than one. As Domi reminded me - we have plenty of time and no schedule for this camino, and we hope to be able to walk the next 700 kms. Fingers crossed. 🙏      Read more

      Hier einige Impressionen aus der Stierkampfarena in Pamplona. Diese wurde 1922 gebaut und großteils von den Bürgern Pamplonas finanziert.
      War eine sehr interessante Führung mit einem Audioguide in deutsch.
      Bei der Besichtigung habe ich festgestellt, dass Ernest Hemingway als Gast in der Arena war.      Read more
