      Uterga

Day 5 - Epic Day to Puente La Reina

      4 de outubro de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

I pooped in Pamplona. Yes it’s a thing and we talk about it a lot. That good news started our day out right. We also talk a lot about what we can possibly take out of our bag to lighten it. Uno is still with us but we have not had a single down minute to play - or journal, read, relax, etc…it’s all walking, finding a bathroom, making sure we are hydrated, and finding food. Today we decided to make it “our Camino/our Way”. We decided to add to our walk and do the 5km extension to see a 12th Century church that was an extension of the French Camino route. Highlight was the lady asking me if I wanted the open the doors of the church for the afternoon (which she shared is a big honor) and it was an amazing experience opening the big heavy door as other pilgrims waited to enter the church and hearing the door creak and seeing the candles and the church for the first time (pic - round church). We walked and walked 20+ km (12+ miles) and ended in Puente la Reina and yes that is Joan (pictured) on their famous bridge. We attended mass at 7:30 pm and they asked all pilgrims to come forward for a special blessing and the priest asked us our name and where we were from. Offered a group blessing, and a beautiful Camino necklace as the church sang to us wishing us well on our travels- it was very emotional for many of us. We had a wonderful bottle of Navarre Cabernet- our first wine in Spain. In bed ready for 22km tomorrow. Joan washed our hiking clothes in our bathtub and they are hopefully drying tonight hanging around our room- if not we have to hang them on our bags We will be taking pics at every city sign we pass thru with the goal of having something unique and funny - joan. Shocking-Joan lost her sunglasses today. Buen Camino!Leia mais

      Pamplona to Zariquiegui

      9 de setembro, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We had a short walk today maybe 12km. It was hot though with short climb into town. Tomorrow a bit more climb then steep down and apparently after that mostly flat for a good while. Ed is keen to ride a bike so I’ll look into hiring one. That will be good so we can cover a bit more distance each day. Ed fell asleep late afternoon for the evening so I went into Pamplona for dinner alone. I got to talking to a pilgrim in a bar and lined St my watch and it was 9:45. The door to albergue get locked at 10 so I jumped up& rushed home and got there with 2 minutes to spare almost suffering the same fate Ed had suffered the night before. The landscape is quite different now. Fields of sunflowers and haystacks, expansive and open with windfarms dotted about. We met a lovely couple from Melbourne. Unfortunately Steve has a lurgy he picked up on the plane so their Camino is not going the way they planned. It’s challenging for me to mould my walking to fit with Ed and be ok with that. I feel like I’m missing out on the people I meet that walk further and then I don’t see them again so hard to find my people. I’m working with my mind to be at peace with the Camino I’m on.Leia mais

      “The Error to Erro”

      19 de abril, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

(aka Hailing a taxi in Spain) Lintzoain to Zabaldika
After multiple days of rain & cold, it was so nice to wake up to sunshine! Our morning journey out of Lintzoain was a beautiful one. Hiking through lush woodlands with melodies from migrating Spring songbirds birds filling the air, if it weren’t for distant views of the mountain range, the scenery could have easily been mistaken for Michigan!

We’d read that there was quite a steep decent down into the next town— very rocky and difficult to navigate, made even more treacherous by the recent rains. Given that we’d both been struggling with knee pain, we opted to take the road (vs trail) and followed a wonderful new friend of ours from the Netherlands, who’d charted the course the night before. It wasn’t until about 3 miles down the winding road that a passing cyclist, who rightly assumed we were pilgrims, was kind enough to stop & point out in Spanish that we were headed the wrong direction! Doh!! Thanks to some very kind-hearted construction workers in the nearby town who called us a taxi we were able to get back on track 🚕

      Day 3-Larrasone to Zariquiegui

      8 de setembro de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Well I am going to give a name to this day. I will call it “River ran dry”. We set out at our normal time and we had about 10 miles to Pamplona, the city where they run the bulls!. The entire way we followed Rio Argo river and was the most delightful section we have walked so far. The river has its twists and turns which we followed and the river ran fast in parts and slow in others. Weather was perfect in the morning and CJ had picked up the pace a bit so I was taking up the rear for most of the morning. We stopped at a cafe about 4 miles in and sure enough our man Ray was there. 3rd time he tells us that we won’t see him again as he is slow but I am not believing that!
We arrived in Pamplona which is a large city and the trail crawls right thru the center of the city and its downtown area. Kind of funny to have the sweaty crowd with backpacks walking with the city shoppers. My goal of purchasing a new Fitbit did not pan out as the 3 places I went to that online say they sell them don’t so I got a cheap one that will do most of the job till I get home.
After that search was over we discussed and both of us did not want to see more of the city so we choose to push on.
As we were leaving the city , there was a very large group of people centered around a large building ( you will see the pic) and they were waiting for some sort of event. The place was crawling with the national police and they were on the rooftops guarding as well so I will assume that some important people were involved in the event. The problem was the people were all crowded on the Camino route so we were challenged to push through the crowd with our packs… I had stored my walking sticks in my bag but was tempted to pull them out at one point :) we finally got thru the crowd and on our way. We never did figure out what the event was.

Leaving Pamplona took awhile as it is a large city but once we got out it was really hot, dry desert type land and the last water fountain before we entered the last 6 mile stretch was out of order. In addition the last 3 miles was on a very long uphill section.
SO the “ran dry” part was me, about 3/4 of a mile from our destination I crapped out. CJ was zipping in front of me so I just let him go. BTW the last 3/4 was all uphill.
At this point I was out of water , totally drained of energy….but I was carrying a banana which saved the day. Sat in the shade had the banana ( the video I took was from that spot!)and then tackled the hill. At the top of the hill was the entrance to the town and there is CJ sitting right next to the towns water fountain right at the front gate of the city with a huge smile on his face …I drank 2 liters:) Lesson for the day is to eat and drink more:)

Total Miles for the day was 16.25 ….will start the step count again tomorrow:)

So my reflection for the day( mostly in the morning) was about how the little things matter when you hike. Moved water from left to right side as my right side was hurting, it worked.. move the shoulder straps down as my neck was killing me, reduced that ache, had various pains and used the poles differently to take the pressure off.. it worked several times…. All in all they were little adjustments that had major impact. In the end , the little things in life matter and I need to pay better attention to them as small adjustments can have big impacts .

Tomorrow we are planning another 16 mile day, CJ is a little worried that it may too much so we have a backup plan but it will be hot again tomorrow so we are going to leave an hour earlier . Will get to walk with head lamps …. Never done that before!

Zariquiegui to Puenta de la Rena

      29 de maio, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Today was a beautiful day. We started out the day hiking up to Alto de Perdon, the hill of forgiveness. Which I imagine it is named that because of the forgiveness you need for the choice words you say as you climb the mountain 😂 it was windy and cold on top but amazing views. We saw tons of snails and pink honeysuckle along the way as well as almond trees and olive groves. After that we stopped in a little town and had breakfast and rested for a while then we took an alternate route so we could go see an 11th century Templar church. It was worth the extra few Km’s. We ended up putting in 12 miles today to end at an alburgue called Hotel Jakue. This place is an oasis in a desert. All in all a wonderful day!Leia mais

Leaving Pamplona was a small climb about 2400 ft. The views were beautiful on the ridge line. The trail was much tamer today. We are hoping we get into a groove soon. Our body’s are still adjusting to this lifestyle. 🙂Leia mais

      Pamplona on route to SJPdP

      19 de maio, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I arrived in Pamplona and walked the 30mins to my hostal from the train station. It's beautiful here ... luscious greenery and historical stonework. Google maps is a godsend! How did we ever get from A to B before?! Imagine carrying UBDs in backpacks 🤣

I went for a walk to find some hiking poles but no joy. I ended up eating a bread roll with omelette and ham inside as most food places are closed on Sundays ... not a great choice!

I started feeling a bit off in the evening, so I went to the chemist to get some drugs - they recommended a magic pill that you take 3 times a day over 3 days . I had the worst night sleep, body ached all over, nausea, and my head felt like it was going to explode! (not from the food, but more than likely something I've picked up on the flight over)

I honestly was in a very vulnerable state and at a loss as to what to do ... I felt so sick I wanted to come home. It was just awful, but I powered on.

I considered changing my accommodation but decided to just lay low and trust that this was all part of the process. On a positive note, I do feel sooo much better than I did 3hrs ago though! 🤞

Hopefully, it stays that way ... thanks friends for all the loving, healing vibes! 🙏❤️

      Zariquiegui (10.9km 77.5km)

      23 de abril de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After a great tourist day in Pamplona we had a breakfast on the main square with a couple of other French Pilgrims ending their Camino as they do it in segments over a few years with their leave. Then went to a traditional Latin mass in the Cathedral. We set off at mid-day for the small town walking through beautiful farm land. I think Jane wanted some time alone as she sent me off to buy some lunch in a small village while she walked on. I caught up about an hour later just before our destination in San Andres Albergue in Zariquiegui! The small Albergue had a communal meal which is one of the highlights of the Camino highlights. Tonight we sat with Canadians and French (a young couple who live in Toulouse, France. They left their home town on foot and will walk all the way to Santiago and then onto Fatima, and then will reverse the whole trip back home. They hope to take 60 days!)
The Camino is very busy this year and there is a bit of a rush to get to the next accommodation as they are filling fast. We are booking more than we would like and therefore walking a bit less too but it is working for us rather than being so focussed on getting to the next town. Forcing some patience onto me maybe …
