      5 am

      July 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Trying to beat the heat, leaving Logroño at 5am. That’s a little late, but I am hoping to be in Navarrete by 8 and Ventosa by 10. The final 12 kilometer are downhill and not that hard to do, meaning I should be checked into my next albergue by 1, before the heat rises over 35.Read more

      Logroño

      September 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Once again we started out long before the sunrise to get miles in and miss the heat but the weather today was perfect hiking weather, cool and overcast. Walking here is amazing. The mileage is hard, at just shy of 19 miles today and likely more than 20 tomorrow, but the rewards are huge.

We are meeting so many people walking for so many different reasons. When we get into a new village it seems we always run into someone we know, usually a person we met days earlier. It is so good to check in with, and encourage, one another. At dinner last night we had great conversations challenged by many languages but it all gets sorted out somehow.

Each night around dinner time we begin the search for a bed for the next night. Somehow it works out, be it a bunk bed like tonight with 12 others or like tomorrow where we scored a room with just two beds!

Tomorrow looks like another cool weather day so walking should be good.
      Buen Camino!

      Day 5 - “Rest day”

      September 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

“There are plenty of difficult obstacles in your path. Don't allow yourself to become one of them." - Ralph Marston.

Day 5 - Sansol to Logroño by bus

Today’s walk is called the “knee wrecker” due to the steep inclines and declines, and the many, many hills and valleys. Uuummm, no thank you. I took the bus just after 8 am and was to Logroño before 9. By 11 I had secured a private room (with its own bathroom) and left my bag at the pension while I went out to explore.

Logroño is celebrating - Fiesta de San Mateo - all week. Now that’s a party! The day kicked off with a band and food tastings in the plaza. The line ups were crazy! One Pintxos or tapas for 3€, with a personal sized bottle of local wine. Such a good deal, I braved the lines to try two different ones - a chicken skewer at one and then bread with thinly sliced pork belly strip and homemade sausage. Both were excellent, and the wine was good too!

Other than wander out a few times in the day, I did nothing. Felt a bit guilty as everyone else I know were slogging it out - particularly between Sansol and Viana. Got my laundry washed and dried at the Pension, Met up with Sabrina who gave me the necklace they had picked up for me. Tried and failed to book a physiotherapist to check on my ankle and no appointments tomorrow as it’s a national holiday. So, not sure what to do.

Decided to head out to Calle de Laurel which is a street known for tapas bars (along with the surrounding streets). The place was hopping! Everyone is in party mode and they don’t have to work tomorrow. The streets were filled - and not one mask was to be seen. I tried 3 items and had 2 glasses of wine. First was an asparagus with ham and cheese tapas. Next was a charcoal grilled chicken skewer like this afternoon. Saved the best for last. A tapas sized roll with grilled Iberian pork, Brie and a secret sauce - some kind of garlic oil I think. I had to order again as it was freaking amazing!

I knew Dave and Nancy were planning on hitting up the street too, so I messaged to let them know about this place. Within a minute of ordering again, they were there. They had already been roaming the street. Perfect timing! They ordered their beers and tapas and we just hung out, charred and people watched. What an amazing evening, full of good company, good vibes and zest for life!

I have pretty much decided to walk to Navarette tomorrow. It’s only 13.1 km. But it is also mostly uphill. Can’t say it will be a fun day, but I will give it a go. What doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Now if only the people’s tv in the room adjoining mine wasn’t right by my ear, I might be able to get some sleep!

      Day in Logrono

      May 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

What a day, this place is huge! So many places to see and visit with no tourist bus around.. ..I'll post the pics of today so far so a visual idea of the place may be seen I started off with morning tea at a cafe..or breakfast as they call it here...orange juice, cafe, tostada's with apricot jam?
Walked past a dress shop very upmarket...I wouldn't shop in there but thought my sister's and daughters and daughters in law would like to see the fashion .

I then visited the Cathedral to light some candles for all of us, listened to a bit of the service before continuing down to the tourist office, fortunately finding the "Museo o de la Rioja" showing a fascinating history of the region and focusing on some of the amazing women of the area too.

I came across a fountain in the middle of a roundabout and quickly was lost! But found the medieval tower which was also fascinating...a beautiful video played on the wall of the round tower dating back to. 12th century.

      Today in Logrono

      May 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

After my walk this morning into the afternoon, the heat was stifling so back to hostel to prepare dinner. Slept all late afternoon, and felt a bit let down that the day was almost gone.

But that's recovery for you in Logrono. A lot of pilgrims feel the heat and wish they had started out earlier in the day.

I met lovely Zoe from California who shared her electrolyte tablets with me as I arrived yesterday. Today she turned in when I was talking to Donna from over the ditch to help out with a query, my sim card won't let me call businesses...and I have to go to a separate website to buy minutes then go to the original seller of the sim to top up! So annoying. Same issue that you had oor Annie, I think. How does the sim know that I'm calling a business?

I wanted to post a few more photos from today's walkabout before I settle in for the night wishing everyone God speed with love 💕

The photos are of my bunk room before I left this morning. Six bunks with lovely white starched sheets pillowcases, lovely white bath towels and curtains across our bunks! Luxury!

Then a long walk down a "Calle" street which doesn't allow cars toward the cathedral. After the cathedral, I stopped at the tourist office which has the statues of pilgrims in front of it. Behind this was the medieval tower. That was quite eerie and depicted a video on the wall of its history.

Then it was on to the "Museo o de la Rioja" which has an amazing palace as it's home.

      Last day logrono

      June 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

I met Jo from Epsom, Korean immigrant, we visited the church together, lit some candles, said a few prayers, then went on our ways.

A bit of shopping for Macaylas birthday, it was fun trying to find a birthday card...ah well it's her big birthday so had to find something special.

I was going to find the post office but what a walk and then one has to take a ticket and wait in line for your turn which may be two hours away. I wanted to stay but it got too hot so I'm gonna try again tonight!

Photos are of the church and king Alfonso of Spain. A little vegan vege pastie which was very tasty...and the cathedral from the outside ... Who can believe this year goes so fast June already. Got a wee birthday card off to macayla nearly 21 woohoo!! Love n hugs XO ❤️

    • Day 10

      In limbo

      August 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

I’m in a bit of a liminal state as I take buses each day rather than walking. Today I took the bus from Los Arcos to Logrono. Tomorrow I’ll go to Burgos. Friday to Leon, and then I’ll rejoin the trail.

I’m not holding too tightly to these plans, but I was able to map out a loose itinerary for my walk to Santiago. It will take about 15 days. If I really don’t feel ready to stop walking, I can extend the trip by 4 or 5 days and walk to the ocean at Finisterre. It would be nice to finish at the ocean.

I’m feeling a bit antsy to be walking again and restless with lots of idle time. (It’s amazing that a whole day’s walk can be done in 30 minutes by bus. My concept of time and distance is definitely changing.)

I don’t really enjoy the big cities as much as the smaller villages. Some of the smaller villages were originally built as safe havens for pilgrims and continue to have a feeling of welcome and support. It’s easier to get lost in the crowd of locals and tourists in the cities.

I read posts from other people who had to leave the Camino for various reasons describe the transition from being a “pilgrim” to being a “tourist.” When I’m not walking, I feel less like a pilgrim, which is hard. I also don’t feel like a tourist. I’m not really here for the food or the wine. (I saw a restaurant menu that looked good and asked when they started serving dinner and the host said 9pm 😟).

So, it turns out sitting can be as hard as walking. Maybe another good lesson to ponder.
