      Rabo de Toro

      De enige associatie met Cordoba die ik bij aankomst met deze stad heb is de ietwat lompe Seat Cordoba model 1993. Een persiflage op de schoonheid die Cordoba als stad uitstraalt.

      We parkeren onze Cato op slechts 10 minuten van het historische centrum. Het laatste vrije plaatsje. Een goed voorteken.

      De joodse wijk is ons eerste doel. Binnen de oude stadspoorten in het heerlijke zonnetje een aaneenschakeling van prachtige historische gebouwen. Het is siësta tijd en dat betekent een oase van rust in de smalle straatjes. We bezwijken voor een charmant terras. Een heerlijke salade met pan en een glas Verdejo op de 23ste verjaardag van onze jongste zoon Ties. "La buena vida espanola".

      Langzamerhand dringt tot ons door dat Cordoba de bakermat is van de culturele en economische ontwikkeling van Europa.

      In de Romeinse tijd groeit Cordoba uit tot hoofdstad van de gebieden Andalusie en Extramadura. In 300 na Chr. heeft Cordoba meer belangrijke gebouwen dan Rome.

      De komst van de Moren (Moslims) vanaf 711 na Chr. bracht veel wetenschappelijke en filosofische kennis vanuit het Midden Oosten. Cordoba groeide uit tot de grootste stad ter wereld rond het jaar 1000 na Chr. met ca 450.000 inwoners. Toen het culturele , commerciële en financiële centrum van de wereld.
      (Dordrecht, de oudste stad van Nederland (!), kreeg in 1220 na Chr. haar stadsrechten!)

      Ik (Nico) kreeg het voorrecht om de Mezquita, de Moorse Cathedraal van Cordoba te bezoeken. No perros toegestaan. Bob moest buiten blijven. Het gebouw is imposant. Ik heb het in een filmpje proberen vast te leggen, maar je moet het zelf beleven. De katholieke pracht en praal van de kathedraal schuurt met de ingetogenheid en soberheid van de Moorse bouwkunst, maar is ook indrukwekkend.

      Vrijdagochtend om 9.30u melden wij ons met Bob in de fietskar bij Baja tours. Jonas, een jonge zuiderbuur uit Roeselaere, is onze gids voor de Cordoba Bike Highlights Tour. Terwijl de stad nog moet ontwaken, fietsen wij door de smalle straatjes, langs de prachtige paleizen, kerken, parken en beelden. Jonas vertelde ons op zeer plezante wijze met veel inhoudelijke details en achtergronden over de diverse locaties. Cordoba heeft als enige stad ter wereld 4 vermeldingen op de lijst van erfgoed van Unesco waaronder
      jaarlijks in mei het festival van de patio's.

      S middags fietsen we naar de Madinat Al-Zahra. Een ruinestad die in de 10e eeuw op ca 7 km van het centrum werd gebouwd. Na slechts 75 jaar werd de stad verwoest. Vanwege een autorally konden we niet bij het terrein komen. Helaas sport (?) en cultuur konden zich die middag niet met elkaar verenigen.

      Rabo de Toro, een authentiek andalusische stoofschotel, kon ik uiteraard bij het avondmenu (21u) niet weerstaan. Daarmee was ook in Cordoba de cirkel weer rond.

      Mijn cluppie won vandaag op historische wijze (6-0) van van 020. Matthieu daarna eveneens op historische wijze Paris-Roubaix. Vergeef me dat ik ietwat euforisch de "pen" heb gehanteerd.      Read more

      Als je in Cordoba bent, moet je de Mesquita moskee gezien hebben. Een mooi indrukwekkend bouwwerk. Begonnen als een moskee en tweemaal flink uitgebreid. Daarna hebben de katholieken er nog een kerk opgezet. De toren kan ook beklommen worden, maar in verband met de hitte hebben we daar van afgezien.Read more

An important Roman city and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages, the city is best known for La Mezquita, an immense mosque that was transformed into a cathedral after the Reconquista.       Baena to Castro del Rio

      D: Today was an easy 20 km stretch, although a bit heavy on paved surfaces. We made the acquaintance of a large dog whose job is to protect the sheep, although he was willing to tolerate our picnic under the olive trees as long as we were willing to share our tortilla patata with him.

      Day 29: Baena to Castro del Río

      Day 29, from Baena to Castro del Río, 21.3km.
      If there's one bar you should visit on leaving Baena, it's the Al Lío bar. The friendly owner offers pilgrims a sello.
      A large mojón showed us the way out of Baena. it's bitumen road, but fortunately the traffic isn't too bad.
      After 2km, we took a gravel road. Unfortunately, this only lasted 4km.
      The rest of the stage is on sealed roads, with hardly any verges. Fortunately, the only people on this road are farmers on their way to their olive groves.
      At the eighth kilometre, we crossed the bridge over the Río Guadajoz. This bridge replaced another, which was not destroyed, and offered us a place to take a break.
      The only distraction on the rest of the route is the river, which meanders across the plain, and a few rural activities, such as a goat farm.
      Before reaching Castro del Río, there are olive tree nurseries. With all these young olive trees, the olive oil industry is not likely to disappear any time soon.      Read more

      Day 30: Castro del Río to Santa Cruz

      Day 30, from Castro del Río to Santa Cruz, 19.4km.
      We spent the night at the Hostal A Ka La Sole, which is to the north-west side of the town, and very close to the Camino. A few steps and we were out of town.
      The "official" stage from Castro del Río to Santa Cruz passes through Espejo. The only thing that bothered us about this stage was that just before you get to Santa Cruz, you have to cross a bridge over the Río Guadajoz on the N-432, the Carretera de Córdoba. We've crossed this bridge twice in the past, in a bus, and we've seen the traffic that crosses it. So we didn't want to take any risks crossing that bridge.
      We had picked up tracks by another pilgrim who had taken another route in April 2022, which did not cross the Río Guadajoz at any point. So we chose this option.
      The short climb out of Castro del Río is a gravel road, and we had a great view of the town. On the other side of the hill, we could now see other crops: cereals and chickpeas.
      After 4.5km, we had to take the A-309 for 700 metres. The verge is wide, so there's nothing to worry about. Then we took a country road, not at all busy, given the state of the bitumen. Here, olive trees grow in tight rows.
      A little over 3km later, we took a dirt track that lead us through fields of sunflowers, cereals and olive groves. It's a very varied path, with lots of short ups and downs. We even had the pleasure of seeing the Río Guadajoz.
      A puddle on this path reminded us that it would be a nightmare to walk on this path after a lot of rain.
      The route we took is in fact part of the long stage from Castro del Río to Córdoba. At the junction with the CV-271, a small country road with no traffic, we left the Camino, ignoring the yellow crosses, and followed the road towards Santa Cruz.
      When we reached the area where there is a Roman bridge, the Puente de Fontalba, we couldn't resist seeing it. It didn't take us long to cross the olive grove to get to it! The bridge was probably built in the 1st century AD.
      Back on the road, we came across some arrows, which led us to believe that this road to Santa Cruz was part of the Camino in the past.
      We're staying at the Hostal La Bartola.
      Tomorrow it's going to be hot. We'll have to decide whether to walk the 26km without shade or water, or take the bus to Córdoba.      Read more

      Une belle étape avec une arrivée dans la ville de Cordoba vers 13h30.
      Après un repas dans un joli parc, petit tour de la ville. Nous devons alterner entre vélo et pieds car il y a beaucoup de monde. Direction la mosquée-cathédrale qui est juste magnifique.
      La recherche du bivouac elle a été bien compliquée... Et nous a rajouté 7km de montée pour au final nous installer dans un champ d'oliviers au bord de la route 😅      Read more

      Córdoba

      Nachdem wir uns in Tabernas in der Ölmühle mit dem poetischen Namen "Oro del Desierto" mit Olivenöl eingedeckt hatten, wollten wir zwischen Roquetas de Mar und Aguadulce auf den schönen Palmenparkplatz, auf dem "Hobbyline" im Frühling standen. In der Zwischenzeit wurden dort leider eeextrem grosse und deutliche Verbotsschilder aufgestellt. So mussten wir uns mit der 2. Reihe begnügen, die zwar auch eine schöne Aussicht hatte, aber leider etwas vollgemüllt war und direkt an der wenig befahrenen Strasse. Naja...für eine Nacht ok😏

      Weiter ging es dann nach Córdoba auf den Stadtstellplatz. Teuer, enge kurze Parkbuchten aber erstaunlich ruhig und wirklich super nah an der Altstadt. Und als "Supplement" für uns: ein gepflegter Park mit altem Baumbestand, in dem Nona nach dem bravourös gemeisterten Stadtbesuch ihre aufgestaute Energie beim Ballspiel rauslassen konnte. Mensch und Hund zufrieden😁

      Natürlich stand auch ein Besuch in der beeindruckenden Mezquita an. Diese steht seit Urzeiten auf heiligem Boden. Unter den Römern ein Tempel und unter den Westgoten eine Basilika. Als die Mauren Córdoba einnahmen, bewiesen sie die ganze Toleranz des damaligen Islam, teilten die Kirche und überliessen den Christen eine der beiden Hälften. Eine nicht nur in Andalusien sondern auch in den eroberten Gebieten des Orients oft geübte Praxis. Über mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert hinweg beteten Moslems und Christen im gleichen Gotteshaus. Im 16. Jahrhundert war eine massive Machtdemonstration angesagt und die christlichen Kirchenherren "pflanzten" ihre Kathedrale ins Zentrum der Mezquita, was damals schon als Akt der Barbarei bezeichnet wurde. (aus unserem Reiseführer "Andalusien") Und tatsächlich, im Kontrast zur Schlichtheit der Mezquita mit ihren immer noch über 800 Säulen wirkt die Kathedrale total protzig und irgendwie deplaziert. Aber spannend ist der Kontrast allemal. Leider hat die christliche Kirche in meinen Augen hier eine grosse Chance vertan, indem sie die Mezquita für sich allein beansprucht. Man stelle sich vor, Christen und Moslems würden es schaffen, hier friedlich nebeneinander zu beten💫 (Anke)      Read more

      Nicht unbekannt, aber wunderbar

      Ist Cordoba. Bei meiner letzten Tour durch Andalusien passte Cordoba nicht in die Planung, aber jetzt. Die Zeit ist günstig, denn aufgrund der Wetterlage ist es keineswegs heiß, sondern sehr angenehm. Außerdem müssen wir erstaunlicherweise für Eintrittskarten für die Meszquita gar nicht anstehen.
      Die Mezquita ist schon ganz etwas Besonderes und wir lassen uns eine ganze Weile durch dieses riesige Bauwerk treiben und saugen die ganz besondere Stimmung auf. Danach geht es noch ein wenig durch die Altstadtgassen. Unser Campingplatz ist knapp 30 km außerhalb, aber das ist mit dem Roller über die Autobahn kein Problem. Den heutigen Tag werden wir wohl am Campingplatz aussitzen, denn es ist Sturm und Regen angekündigt. Am Freitag werden wir aber noch einmal nach Cordaba rein fahren      Read more
