    Finding our bearings

    January 24 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Well we arrived at Puerto de la Cruz after a good flight and picking up the car from the airport, the replacement apartment seems great apart from no kettle and no Wi-Fi, and our MiFi dongle won't connect and so we are cut off from the outside world! After an early night and a good sleep we had a leisurely breakfast on the balcony just as the sun was making an appearance and lo and behold changing a few settings on the dongle and we are connected to you all again! Walked down into the town to get our bearings first drink in a typical British pub, not British measures, yes that's all gin in the glass. Puerto is a nice mix of colonial Spanish buildings and hotels with no high-rise buildings, a couple of nice churches and plenty of bars and restaurants for us to choose from during the week. We have a very late lunch and a taxi back to the apartment to save us walking up the hill, new kettle arrived in the apartment so a good way to round the day off.Read more

    La Orotava

    January 25 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Today we woke to very cloudy skies and Martin seems to have developed a runny nose that requires guttering! We have a leisurely breakfast and then sit and read on the balcony watching the paragliders over the mountain in front of us. After lunch we went for a short ride to La Orotava which is a very old fashioned town where lots of the buildings have wooden balconies which stand out over the street. There were two beautiful churches with fantastic internal decorations.Read more

    Jardin Victoria, La Orotava

    January 25 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

.We noticed a huge pink mansion set high up some steps in beautiful gardens and wondered what it was, to our amazement it was a cafeteria, so of course we had to go and have a look, we had two lovely cups of hot chocolate sat outside on the terrace looking at the beautiful gardens filled with birds of paradise plants, roses on trellises and hebes, Next door was another tiered garden full of fountains which unfortunately we're not working but had beautiful laid out garden beds.Read more

    Botanical Gardens, La Orotava

    January 25 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Across the road yet another garden not quite so neatly presented but it did hold one of the oldest Dragon trees in Tenerife. After returning home we decided to go for a Chinese meal unfortunately that was a big mistake was one of the worst I have ever had with very slimy chicken I couldn't eat it so returned home and started to eat the chocolate washed down with gin, you sometimes have to make the best of it!Read more

The Lagoon at Puerto del la Cruz

    January 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Today we are doing some more exploring of Puerto de la Cruz, we are heading down to the Lagoon which is situated right alongside the sea in the heart of the town, you have to pay to get in but there's plenty of beach chairs and at least three or four swimming pools for you to enjoy, obviously you need the weather, today is slightly overcast. After walking along the beachfront and through the shops we decided to have a beer so we went to The Gramophone Bar which sells craft ales in bottles, we sat and watched the football on a large screen and watched the world go by.Read more

    Playa Jardin Beach

    January 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After leaving the bar we walked along the front, not quite a promenade but it's nearest we could get. Some of the houses have murals painted onto the sides of them a few are very strange but most are quite nice. We made our way right up to the Playa Jardin beach which has very black sand not our cup of tea, it doesn't look very inviting although there are quite a few people on it. After that we headed back to the centre of the town to pick up a taxi to bring us back, it's all uphill and a taxi for 5 euros is well spent! We're staying in tonight for a home cooked or rather home thawed meal of lasagne and jacket potato, and much wine, we do know how to live!Read more

    Teide National Park

    January 27 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today we have woken to much better weather, light high cloud and more sunshine so we decide to drive to Teide National Park to look at the volcano, it is the highest mountain in Spain and is over 3600 m high. It's not very far away only about 38 km but it's round winding country roads, the road surface is a good and the road is quite wide and we start off through lots of forests which are quite dense in places until we reach well over 1500m, then it starts to go a bit more scrubby, bare and desolate. We stop to have a look at the view and the ground is almost like a lunar landscape with fine sand. It's very warm up here much different to what we expected we have brought cardigans, coats and jumpers but so far they're not needed. We carry on virtually to the top, past the chairlift which we decide against as there is only one car running and the queue is horrendous, also there's no way you would get me on there!Read more

    Teide National Park part 2

    January 27 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We stop at the cafe for a quick cuppa by weird rock formations and then decide we will make our way back home because once you have seen one rock that looks like a knob there's not much more to see and we can soak up some rays on the balcony. Half way back down the mountain we drive through cloud like patchy fog. Once below the cloud the sun was still shining so we made our way back to the apartment to sit on the balcony for a late lunch, little did we know that after about an hour the cloud would cover the sun and that was it for the rest of the day so back into the apartment with our books a blanket and our fire.Read more

    Loro Parque 3

    January 28 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Next we move on to the Dolphin show that was spectacular, they are such cute looking creatures. We then had a walk under the Shark tunnel and the Aquarium, that was really freaky. After that we went into the free flying area where birds of all sorts Parrots, Parakeets and lots more were just flying about freely.Read more
