      Cinque Fotografies-Barcelona Day 6

      April 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We ventured about an hour out of the city to visit the Monistrol de Montserrat. We departed by train from the Plaza Espanya which is adjacent to the Barcelona FC Stadium.

It was nice to see a different area of Spain, and we were thinking that it resembles parts of the Western U.S. We were joined by a new acquaintance from Texas who we met at Park Güell a few days earlier. In another small-world phenomenon we know people in common in Portland.

Those who know me are aware that I'm very afraid of heights. There are two ways to the Monastery: aerial tram or cog railroad. At my urging we opted for the lesser of two terrors and we took the train. The views were quite spectacular, and I was only troubled by some sheer drops a few times.

When we arrived at the Monastery, we wandered up the pathway to the Basilica. I purchased a candle and lit it in memory of my father, aunt and both grandmothers. This brought back many memories of my youth where either my mother or grandmother would take me to light votive candles to remember departed loved ones.

When we arrived at the plaza outside the Basilica, Sunday Mass was taking place. We had wanted to enter the Basilica to hear the Boys' Choir, but no new visitors were allowed in until after the service and the performance of a few songs by the choir. Luckily, the service was broadcast and the sound was quite lovely.

I was moved by the church bells. They were jubilant and beautiful. We were able to then enter the Basilica to see the magnificent church and several side chapels. One highlight was the display of the Black Madonna. It was beautiful and moving and she gazes out through a window to the church.

Jim and I decided to take the heights challenge to an additional level by purchasing a ride up the funicular to the top of the mountain. I prayed to Our Lady of Acrophobia, and I managed to make it to the top unscathed despite an elevated heart rate. The view really was worth the extra elevation.

After our return, we were welcomed by a couple from Barcelona who we met on a Facebook group page. They were lovely and hospitable, and we met for a drink at a bar across from the hotel It was fun practicing Spanish while they practiced English.

We concluded the night with our new friend from Texas and we enjoyed a late-night Chinese meal. We really had a wonderful day. Barcelona is the best!

      Barcelona - part 3

      June 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

On Friday, we had to say goodbye to Jacque 😔. It was great spending time with her. We then took a train to tour the Montserrat Monastery in the mountains outside of Barcelona and do some hiking, Our hiking turned into more of an adventure than planned: we went to the top of the mountain with the intent of hiking to a sacred cave. However, after 2 hours of hiking down the mountain over mostly very rough terrain, we arrived near some other caves -- and almost 4 miles from where we needed to catch the train back. We tried to get a taxi (even enlisted help of a woman working at a bar) with no success so we hoofed it back. This included over 3 miles on a windy mountain road with no berm. We made the last train with 30 minutes to spare.

On Saturday, we saw a neighborhood festival where each street/neighborhood had their own marching group with instruments. Not sure I would call them bands.

We also spent time at the Banksy Museum, Barcelona beach and surrounding area. This included a back-home style brewery (Black Lab) founded by a couple from Chicago.

      Montserrat (cont’d)

      January 9, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Montserrat is similar to other mountainous regions that are home to religious orders in that there are some small little chapels dotted all over the mountain that are quaint and steeped in history.
Jen was a trooper as she hiked all over the mountain with me.
Glimpsed a couple of mountain goats doing their thing...quite amazing to watch as they literally drop down five feet to a ledge and if they miss the ledge...not good :(.

      Montserrat (cont’d)

      January 9, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

We took a tram car ride up the side of the mountain to walk around and see some more of the smaller chapels that have been built higher up the peak.
As you can see the view is quite extraordinary with the Pyrenees mountains visible on a clear day.Read more

      Montserrat (cont’d)

      January 9, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

We arrived back at the basilica to listen to the boys choir sing some traditional religious songs.
The boys are selected from all over Spain to be a part of the choir and are schooled on the mountain.
The amount of tradition and history surrounding the Roman Catholic religion in these areas is extraordinary.
Candles, holy water on tap, museums they have it all.

      Im Gebirge Montserrat

      February 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Montserrat - monastery and mountain

      September 25, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

50km northwest of Barcelona, legend has it that Montserrat mountain was "sawn by angels to make a throne for the Virgin Mary" and once you actually see the mountain, you know that the description fits perfectly.

The limestone turrets of rock extend from its 1236m-high bulk where halfway up lies the Benedictine Monestir de Montserrat, home to the Black Madonna, one of Spain's most revered icons. The monastery was founded in 1025 to commemorate visions of the Virgin Mary, accompanied by celestial light and a chorus of holy music, experienced by shepherds and is Spain's second most important pilgrimage sight after Santiago di Compostela.

The Black Madonna is a Romanesque dark wooden figure holding the infant in her lap, that takes pride of place high above the main altar. Traditionalists believe it was carved by St. Luke and hidden by St. Peter in the mountains. From the long, snaking queue of people who were lining up to touch the icon, it seems that version is very popular still.

Together with our Dutch friends, Hans and Mireille, we timed our visit to coincide with a short performance by the boys choir and we were not alone! The Basilica, adjacent to the monastery, was absolutely packed with tourists from all over the world who spoilt the atmosphere a little by holding up cameras and tablets while the service was taking place.

Once outside again, we wandered around and took in the superb views high above the surrounding plains where mountain hiking and trails dispersed some of the crowds.

Day 7 - from Andorra to Montserrat

      September 11, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Day 7 - Thinking we would have an ‘easy’ day we tracked down ‘How2Roadtrip’ and asked him to take a closer look at our Rallye Machine. The car was doing fine the last 3 days, but then we noticed that the ‘old’ problems were back again (at least hoping that was the case). So we drove over to him and let him do a quick check-up. After that we continued with Team Alpakaner towards our first Road Mission: drive from Llavorsi to Vielha. A wonderful route with amazing villages!
Once in Vielha we made a stop for coffee, not only cause we needed one, but also due to our Rallye Machine, who was not in the mood for any missions today 😕 Luckily enough Hardy (How2Roadtrip) turned up and joined us for a bite to eat. After that, he checked Team Alpakanar’s Audi 80 and then got to taking a test drive with the Rallye Machine. To cut a long story short he fixed it like MacGyver would 🤩💪🏼
From Vielha we drove via Lleide to Sank Ramon, where we took pics for Matze’s son, Ramon. With 3 hungry men ( out of a group of four), we decided to have a candlelight dinner along the roadside in Sank Ramon, before heading on to Montserrat, where we finally arrived around 11:45 pm. Another great day with BEAUTIFUL scenery and a lot of new things we have learnt from Hardy!
Looking forward to seeing the surroundings here during the day tomorrow!
      Good night….
