Grandas de Salime to A Fonsagrada

      June 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This started out as a pretty rainy day, but it only lasted a couple of hours.

We crossed into Galicia today, and now there are concrete markers with the distance to Santiago down to 3 decimal points. Sometimes they are only about 50 meters apart!Read more

      In Galizien angekommen

      September 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more

Last dinner (lunch really!) with four of us that have been walking together for a few days. Olga is heading back to the Dominican Republic and Conrado is heading back to Madrid, I will walk for the next 2 or 3 days with Miguel (neither of us speak each other's language, and it's great!! 🤣)Read more

      Silberrücken

      May 19, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Castro - A Fonsagrada 20km

Read more

    • Day 19

What goes up must come down

      September 23, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Today's KMs - 41.3 kms
      Total KMs - 408.7 kms
      Total blisters - nothing new

After yesterday's effort to reach the peaks of the Hospitales today's walk started with 7+ kms of sheer descent (elevations to prove it). The downhill was beautiful albeit painful on the knees as it was through a pine forest with beautiful views of the Embalse de Salime Dam. I could just imagine Josh W downhill riding all the way and loving it. It was a bit sad to walk through the trees as the 2017 fires swept through this region and all the trees were blackened with little signs of regrowth.

As seems to be tradition we reached our final destination, Castro, too early so we decided to push on, despite the rain. The only thing being that the next town with an albergue was another 25 kms away which resulted in our longest walk so far at over 40kms for the day.

The afternoons walk was much more forgiving with only smaller ups and downs except for the last 1km approaching A Fonsagrada where we are spending the night. Another town on a hill that we've managed to make our final stop 😩

Long day so I think it'll be an early night tonight. More rain and muddy paths are on the cards tomorrow!

      Grandas de Salime - Fonsagrada

      October 2, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Fonsagrada

      September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We enjoyed our stay in Castro especially the home cooked food and the sociable evening with a Dutch mother and daughter, an Italian and a Spaniard. We were very cold when we arrived but warmed up when we’d eaten. It was much colder walking today too and we had some more rain. We are finally in Galicia, the last region of Spain that we’ll visit. It was quite a long day today but mostly forest trails and some very steep uphill sections. The last kilometre up to Fonsagrada was practically vertical!!Read more

Day 69: Grandas de Salime - Fonsagrada

      October 21, 2016 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

      Distance: 25.4 (1738.9/154.5)
      Weather: 19C and super sunny!!!
      Mood: happy
      Staying at: Cantabrico Hostel

Today I reached the border between Asturias en Galcia and so I enter the last region of Spain on my camino. The landscape in Asturias was amazing, green, mountainous, lush and even at times fjord like. Galcia will be less hilly and today was the last 1000m+ mountain. I will miss them, those hills and I haven't found them particularly difficult.
Walking here is so different from France and even from Del Norte as here I keep bumping into the same people and sometimes it really feels like seeing your family again. A familiar face can mean a lot at the end of another day of walking. It also means you cannot avoid the people you don't want to see though... But in my zen state of the past two weeks it can't really bother me.
I just keep enjoying the little pleasures, like a hostel with really towels and super comfy beds and amazing showers. And of course the potential bedbug bites I discovered... All my clothes are in the washer en my bag is spending the night in a binbag with some very smelly spray.... Poor thing!

      A Fonsagrada (ca 161,3km)

      April 7, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

      A Fonsegrada - about 26kms

      October 5, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Another day of steep climbs, stony descents and dreamy mountain views. We've found a good walking rhythm and today was easier than expected. However, as is so often the case, the last few kms were very very tough.

We're in a great private albergue - spotlessly clean and it has washing machines! Luxury 😊

We're now in the province of Galicia.
