Granada ist ein Traum 💃 ...

Vorgestern sind wir auf einem kleinen und sehr schön gelegenen Stellplatz in Cájar (ein ruhiger Vorort von Granada) gelandet. Die Gegend eignet sich prima zum Wandern und so starteten wir gestern direkt vom Womo aus eine schöne Runde mit Blick auf die schneebedeckten Berge der Sierra Nevada (https://www.komoot.de/tour/594686845?ref=aso).

Heute morgen fuhren wir dann mit dem Bus nach Granada. Eine viertel Stunde später waren wir bereits im prallen Leben. Granada ist wunderschön, voller Leben und bietet an jeder Ecke neue tolle Eindrücke.

Wir konzentrierten uns auf das älteste Stadtviertel Granadas. Wie auch bei unserem letzten Besuch in 2016 waren wir von Albaicín total begeistert. Wir bummelten durch die engen Gassen hoch zum Mirador und genossen von der Bar "El Balcon de San Nicolas"
(https://goo.gl/maps/ixhgvu886L94KKHj7) aus den großartigen Blick auf die Alhambra. Es war toll zu sehen, wie sich der Nebel immer weiter auflöste und die Schönheit der Alhambra immer mehr zum Vorschein kam. Das verursachte bei mir Glücksgefühl pur 💃.

Danach hatten wir noch das Glück, auf einer sonnigen Plaza in dem Restaurante "Bar Kiki" in den Genuss eines köstlichen Mittagessens zu kommen.

In dem Viertel gibt es jede Menge Bars und Restaurants. Ab mittags gab es gefühlt an jeder Ecke Live Musik 🎵🎸und die Stimmung war einfach grandios. Alhambra ❤

Heute verbrachten wir bei Kaiserwetter mehrere Stunden in der wunderschönen Alhambra. Am meisten begeisterten mich die Nasriden Paläste, die wir 2016 schon einmal besucht hatten.

Danach spazierten wir durch den Park runter in die Stadt und nahmen dort den Bus zum Mirador de San Nicolas, von wo aus wir in der späten Nachmittagssonne nochmals einen wunderschönen und letzten Blick auf die Alhambra genossen 🤗.

Wir kehrten im gleichen Restaurant wie gestern ein. Der Kellner der Bar Kiki erkannte uns wieder und freute sich sehr über die positive Rezension
(https://goo.gl/maps/qTw6psCrfdMzFHjy6), die ich am Vortag geschrieben hatte. Wir wurden noch aufmerksamer als gestern bedient und bekamen am Ende noch einen Hierbas auf's Haus 😇.

Abgerundet wurde der schöne Tag noch mit einem Video Telefonat mit meiner ganzen Familie, die sich heute zu einem Advents Café getroffen hatte 🥰. Nochmals ganz liebe Grüße aus der Ferne 😘 ...Read more

Alhambra 🕌

In der Nacht war es mega kalt, die Temperaturen sackten unter null Grad ab. Wir mummelten uns im Bettchen ein, nur die Nasenspitze schaute raus😊
Recht früh am Morgen stiegen wir dann in den Bus (175) 🚌 (Haltestelle vor dem Campingplatz) Richtung Granada City, danach noch ein kleiner Fußmarsch von (ca.1,5 km) durch die Stadt.
Bis zum Plaza Isabel la Católica, hier geht es in den Kleinbus (C32 oder C30) der bis direkt zum Ticketschalter der Alhambra fährt.
Ich fand die Bustour hinauf schon ein Erlebniss, gefühlt wie eine kleine Stadt Rundfahrt😄

Ticket geholt, auf geht's! Durch wunderschöne Gärten, mit einer tollen Aussicht über Granada, zielstrebig zu den Nasridenpalästen (wir haben eine feste Uhrzeit für den Einlass in den Palast bekommen).
Ich war gleich hin und weg, was für eine beeindruckende Bausymmetrie, fein gearbeitete Stuckdecken und Wände und farbenfrohe verschnörkelte Kacheln. Eine maurische Architektur und Handwerkskunst die ihresgleichen sucht! Das Highlight war natürlich der bekannte Löwenhof mit den schlanken Marmorsäulen, aber auch der Lichteinfall und die Spiegelungen haben mich verzaubert!
Ich fühlte mich wie im Märchen aus 1001 Nacht und dachte gleich würde Aladin mit seiner Wunderlampe auf einem fliegenden Teppich zu mir kommen und ich hab einen Wunsch frei 😁

Zurück schlenderten wir noch einwenig umher, bestaunen noch den Innenhof vom Palast Karls V und erklimmen den Aussichtsturm der Festung Alcazaba. Es gibt kein Zeitlimit und so sitzen wir auch mal gemütlich auf einer Bank in der Sonne und schauen den Treiben vergnügt zu!
Es war ein Tag der Extraklasse und hat sich wirklich gelohnt!

Travel Day to Granada

A short two hour train ride through olive groves. Oh, the nostalgia, I always love walking through olive groves when on camino. Some people find them boring, but I just love them. Riding on a train through olive groves just isn’t the same. I couldn’t even do my normal loud camino rendition of Andaluces de Jaén, a song by Paco Ibañez of a slightly subversive poem by Miguel Hernández. I love it and sing it every time I walk in an olive grove!

It was a nice walk down promenades from the train station to our hotel, which is on the Gran Vía. It’s in the Renaissance monastery of Santa Paula. Great location, very comfortable. Good fitness center. :-) The reception guy was very nice and put us in a room in the old part overlooking the courtyard. When I told him it was great except for the step up to the bathroom (night-time fall alert went off), he put us in an even nicer little suite with a similar view. No complaints.

Joe decided to nap on arrival, since he hadn’t been able to sleep in till his normal decadent wake-up time. And his stomach was a bit off. So I went to exercise and walk around a bit. I thought that Fanta de Limón would be just the thing for an upset stomach, and once again I was transported back to the camino. It’s my favorite post-walking refreshment, nowhere near as sweet as US soft drinks.

After a quick lunch, we walked up to the Mirador San Nicolás, the iconic viewing spot in the Albaicin (moorish quarter) back over the Alhambra. Dinner in the hotel, nothing great, but it’s convenient. Temps are still ridiculously low, and the sun is brilliant. So lucky.Read more

When we were in Granada, we stayed in a little apartment just a few minutes walk from the Mirador de San Nicolás. We also enjoyed a walk through the Sacromonte area, with its gypsy caves.

La Etapa Reina

On every camino, there is the Etapa Reina, the jewel stage of the route. Though I’m not walking, there’s no doubt that the Alhambra is just that.

We took a little bus up at about 9, and got right in. Six and a half hours later we were on our way out, walking back to town on the shady pedestrian path with babbling water never far away. I had brought some fruit and yoghurt in my bag, but as we were eating breakfast in a cafe, the grandma brought out some freshly made empanadas. Tuna with sun-dried tomatoes. I brought two along and we found a beautiful (if not totally legal) picnic spot in the gardens.

There are four separate sections and to enter each one you have to show your passport. At the entrance to the Generalife (summer palace), I witnessed Spanish bureaucracy at its finest. Two young people, from Hungary I think, got up to the gate. Each one has a passport and a ticket in hand. But oh no, the bureaucrat says— both tickets say “Ella Blabla” but only one of the passports has that name. Ella spoke up —I guess I put my name on both tickets when I bought them online, but you can see that the passport numbers correspond to the two of us. Oh but I’m sorry, says the guard, this is impossible. So after a few minutes back and forth, finally the guard calls his superior and explains the whole thing two or three times with much emotion and consternation. The line gets longer and longer. Finally, just as we always knew would happen, the guard waves his arm in a huge arc and says—pasen Uds. I love Spain!

Rather than describe the many incredibly beautiful rooms, patios, and gardens, I’ll just add some pictures. And a popular refrain — Give alms to the beggar, sir, for there is no pain worse than being blind in Granada.Read more

We did it!!!

Sometimes. Like today. I envy the youth of my daughter. Yes. I might was able to go into town after the Alhambra visit.
But my feet said no. We were parked on top of the hill, and again. ..No! I did not want to walk it up...again...

So. Yes. We did it. Thé Alhambra.
Was it worth a day's travel budget?
Yes . It was.
Quite impressive.
As we have seen the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul many things reminded me of that.
I think Alhambra was more impressive.
But you have to see for yourself.
Now. Goodnoodles, because we overspent, and stay on this parking, to pay the robbery in the morning. .. it's more expencive than a camping. But it has no facilities at all.
Tomorrow another "wanna see".

Hier in Granada endet meine Südspanienreise. Leider musste ich aus meiner so günstigen Unterkunft abhauen. Ich bin in einer Messi-Wohnung gelandet. Eigentlich wollte ich bis Sonntag bleiben. Das geht leider überhaupt nicht. In Zukunft buche ich über Booking nur noch eine Nacht. Und dann hänge ich Nächte ran. Daraus habe ich hart gelernt. Die Stadt ist wie leergefegt. Durch den Virus fehlen hier ca 95 % der Touristen. Es ist fast gespenstisch. Aber der Besuch ist lohnenswert.Read more

Last Day in Granada

We took a local bus up to the Cartuja Monastery, with its overabundant, over-the-top roccoco church and chapel. One Spanish architecture professor is reputed to have described it as a “motionless architectural earthquake.” Pretty good. The information I read suggests that perhaps the order wanted to outdo the Alhambra. I don’t know anything about the Carthusian order, but I do know that the Camino Francés also has a Monasterio Cartujo - de Miraflores in Burgos.

The monastery used to be on the outskirts of town, but now the University of Granada has a whole modern campus up there. It was fun to walk around. Back downtown in early afternoon, we decided to go to the Capilla Real to see where Fernando and Isabel are buried. I hadn’t remembered the anecdote about the very elaborate statuary showing them lying in state up on the floor above the alleged tombs. Her head sinks more deeply into the pillow than his, perhaps a nod to her superior intellect and “heavier brain.” Who knows.

We won’t leave Granada without one more trip up to the Albaicín (moorish quarter) to see the Alhambra from afar in the late afternoon sun. And one more dinner in one more lovely little plaza somewhere. The food has not been great, but totally fine. I would take mediocre food in such a gorgeous setting anyday!

I had forgotten Isabel and Fernando were buried in Granada. I thought the entire Spanish royal family was at El Escorial... Time to brush up on the history of Spain!

The custom of sculpting the likenesses of notables (esp. royalty) on top of their sarcophagi must have been widespread in Europe. I saw a similar resting place for a medieval king and queen in the Bamberg Cathedral (in Franconia, a Catholic region of Germany).

Auch unseren vorletzten Tag in Andalusien haben Linda und ich nochmal mit viel Sightseeing verbracht, denn auch die Stadt Granada hat viel zu bieten. Geprägt ist Granada von einem arabisch-islamischen Einfluss. Dieser lässt sich unter an den arabisch klingenden Namen einiger Sehenswürdigkeiten sowie vielen östlichen Läden und dem arabischen Stadtviertel Albaicín erkennen.
Nachdem wir uns zunächst einen Überblick über die riesige, wieder vorwiegend weiße Stadt von einem Aussichtspunkt aus verschafft haben, sind wir durch enge Gässchen zu der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeit Granadas gelaufen: der Alhambra.
Die unglaublich große und massive Festung liegt auf einer Anhöhe, die sich zu Fuß gut erreichen lässt. Obwohl Linda und ich außer einigen Bilderstopps relativ zügig durch die einzelnen Paläste, alten Militärstützpunkte, archäologischen Ausgrabungsstätten gelaufen und auf verschiedene Aussichtstürme geklettert sind, haben wir mehr als zwei Stunden für die Besichtigung benötigt. Sicherlich hätten wir uns hier auch den ganzen Tag aufhalten können!
Später sind wir noch durch verschiedene Stadtviertel geschlendert. "Realejo" ist bekannt für seine vielen bunten Graffitis, die tatsächlich an vielen Mauern und Häuserfassaden zu finden sind. In dem bereits erwähnten Stadtviertel Albaicín fühlte man sich dagegen wie in einem anderen Land. In den engen, gepflasterten Gassen wurde überall arabisches Essen angeboten und es waren nur noch arabische Krimkramsläden zu entdecken, wo unter anderem duftenden Tees in allen Variationen verkauft wurde.
Am Abend stiegen wir schließlich in den Bus, der uns zurück nach Málaga brachte. Unterwegs haben Linda und ich mit Kim und Jill, meinen neuseeländischen und australischen Freunden telefoniert, Jill hatten Linda und ich sogar noch gemeinsam in Australien letztes Jahr besucht. Schade, dass sie so weit wegwohnen!
Zurück in Málaga verbrachten wir noch einen wunderschönen Abend am Strand mit Pizza und Sangria. Das Meeresrauschen werde ich jetzt erst mal wieder für eine Weile vermissen!Read more
