Nuestra primera parada del Camino Primitivo!! Salimos desde la antigua Catedral de Oviedo donde se inició la ruta del Camino de Santiago.. allí comenzó hace muchos años.. este Peregrinación!!

El Camino Primitivo es la primera ruta de peregrinación, la más antigua. Enlaza Oviedo con Santiago de Compostela y discurre en buena parte por trazados de calzadas romanas. El primer rey peregrino fue precisamente el monarca astur-galaico Alfonso II el Casto, quien, en el primer tercio del siglo IX, quiso viajar a Santiago para confirmar que los restos que acababan de aparecer en Compostela eran realmente los del apóstol.

La devoción del rey por la causa jacobea —se había criado en el monasterio lucense de Samos y era seguidor del Beato de Liébana— fue decisiva para cimentar el nuevo culto. Alfonso II mandaría construir, en la naciente urbe, la primera iglesia. Además, concedió diversas donaciones y promovió el establecimiento de la primera comunidad monástica destinada a atender las demandas del culto en el altar de Santiago, el monasterio de Antealtares.Read more

Today we officially started the Camino Primitivo. The Camino Primitivo is believed to be the "Original Way" because it is the path taken by the first reported pilgrim, Alfonso II of Asturias who left Oviedo, in the year 814 to travel to Santiago de Compostela. Und los geht's auf dem Camino Primitivo. Erster Eindruck: Ruhiger, schöner, andere Menschen. Nach 26 erstaunlich schnell vergangenen Kilometern bei schönstem Wetter und etwas weniger schmerzenden Füßen (vermutlich die Kombination aus Ruhetag, anderer Schnürung der Schuhe und guten Gesprächen) an einer kleinen, sehr gemütlichen Herberge angekommen. Und back to Camino-Feeling mit Handwäsche und Schlafsaal. ;) Einkaufen, kochen und nun nur noch ab ins Bett!Read more

Beautiful walk today in the countryside, with a few little hills. Tomorrow's walk is a lot more challenging.Read more

Etappe eins ist geschafft. Während der Wanderführer uns noch weiss machen wollte, dass es auf der Strecke bis nach Grado gaaaaar keine Steigung gibt und alles im Grunde Ebene Strecke ist, wurden wir schnell eines besseren belehrt.

Tatsächlich liegt Oviedo etwa 150 Meter höher als Grado, aber der alte Jakobus hat natürlich die besten auf und ab Strecken ausgesucht, damit der geneigte Pilger schon weiss, was ihn nach Salas erwartet. Denn dann geht es erstmal nur noch bergauf. Also ein rundum gelungener, erster Tag ;)

Auch das Wetter hat gut mitgespielt, die Abwechslung zwischen wohltuend bewölkt und herrlichstem Sonnenwetter war ideal!Read more

A new beginning

Start of the Primitivo today. Lots of new people with fresh legs, having started in Oviedo. Oviedo was nice and we are well rested before starting a new walk. I finally convinced Pam to buy a walking stick so that has kept her distracted most of the day poking and hitting different things on the track.

Arrived at Grado and managed to get into a beautiful albergue (on top of a hill!). Time to explore Grado now.

Fun in Oviedo

This was a great day with visits to the pre-Romanesque churches (900s!!!) I love them so much. After visiting both the Naranco sites and San Julian de los Prados, Helena and I had a great lunch in the old part of town. Things are really changing in staid old traditional Oviedo when you can get a poke bowl for lunch!

We had so much to catch up on since it had been three years since we last saw each other. We wound up staying up much later than was sensible for someone starting to walk the next day, since I think it was after 1130 when I got to my room.

We also met up with a Forum member from Maine who decided to stop walking in Oviedo because the Salvador had done him in. We had a nice long chat, while sitting in the main square with the Cathedral in the background. He also gave me a Covid test kit that I can use to prove my Covid free status before coming back to the US.

Here’s hoping it won’t be three more years till I see Helena again!Read more

Day 1: Oviedo > Grado (26km)

We start with one of the longer days of hiking. I was surprised how scenic this walk was immediately, less than an hour from starting in the middle of the city it gets very green and cow-filled.

Highlights of the day other than the great views you can see in the photos:

- Cows, cows, cows
- Dogs, dogs, dogs
- Cats, cats, cats
- Almost stepping on a giant snake
- A jamon and queso sandwich for €2
- The first beer after reaching the hostel
- Getting the communal showers to myself so I don't have to cop an eye of too much sweaty sausage

Downside of the day:

-Top bunk

Now I'm off to the supermarket because it's labour day tomorrow and I don't want to run out of cheese and haribo.Read more
