Day 12 - Azofra to Granon

      June 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I've had a bit of a blah day today... my body is feeling it, and old injuries are flaring up.... but you just keep going right! 1 foot in front of the other, 1 step at a time!

The clouds were filling up the sky with their full 50 shades of grey today, not helping my mood! I even got my poncho out for the first time when it started spitting! But thankfully, that's all it did.

Today, I had to really remove myself from the pressure of the fast walkers ... that competitive side of me that wants to hurry along with them... but why?! That's where my work was today.... unravelling this pattern, slowing down & doing the pace that was best for ME!

In fact, 4kms from the end today, Karen suggested that I lay down on a bench, so I took her advice and I rested! I actually drifted off for 10 minutes! I'm getting the hang of this siesta thing! 😴

I took what will maybe become my fave camino photo today, I was quite proud of my creativity! It's probably been done before, but heh, whatever! I proudly shared the idea with other pilgrims! 😝

Finally, I had a decent meal today, too! I must admit the food selection has been quite dismal, but today I had a yummy risotto for lunch, and a big garden salad for dinner! 😋... and of course, lots of patatas frittas! (Chippies)

      Etappe Najera nach Granon

      August 14 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A moment in the sun. Und ich fühlte so viel Liebe und Heilung an diesem Abend und eine grosse Menschenfamilie.

    • Alesanco to Grañón

      September 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After a very good night’s sleep at the Pensión Jauja and self served breakfast of coffee, toast and home-made cake we left as soon as there was enough light to see our way, i.e. about dawn at 7:45am.

Gerard Mc. tried to phone so we returned his call from Jindera where he was watching the AFL Grand Final. Geelong well ahead at half time.

Today’s 23km walk was in 3 equal sized segments. First part was a walk down the road to rejoin the Camino path, followed by a good path up to Cirueña, rising about 200m in altitude.

About an hour in it started to rain so we deployed hitherto unused matching mustard coloured ponchos which kept us dry in the very light rain. Coffee and tortillas at the Bar Jacobeo in Cirueña were well worth the 300m detour off-Camino. When we finished there the rain had stopped.

From there it was a gentle mostly downhill run on a wide path to Santo Domingo de la Calzada (“Saint Dominic of the paved path”). It’s an ancient town that grew up around the hermitage of Dominic Garcia (not Guzman who founded the Dominican order). Back around 1000 he apparently built bridges and paths to facilitate travel to Santiago and is the patron saint of Spanish civil engineers.

Yesterday was mostly through wine country but today was mostly through wheat country: huge already harvested fields of brown or yellow depending on whether the stubble had been ploughed in or not. It was a very wide and beautiful landscape, with occasional enormous stacks of hay bales.

In the center of Santo Domingo we stopped for a sandwich and a drink and aired our feet for about an hour.

Our third segment took us up slightly in altitude to Grañón. Rain set in and got quite heavy for the last 3km as we reached Grañón; the ponchos were deployed again.

There was some confusion about how to get the key to the apartment we had booked. I (K) had failed to notice an email with very brief instructions in Spanish. I phoned the owner and asked him to resend the email. He did so and all was fine. Just had to collect the key a block away.

We’re living it up in a 2-bedroom 2-bathroom modern apartment with a washing machine. We will step out later for a proper feed after last night’s meagre rations. The rain has stopped.

      Albergue Parroquial San Juan Bautista

      August 31 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We stayed at a wonderful albergue last night. It's literally inside a church. The church is fairly big, and the albergue is upstairs in the back. You enter through a side door not the main church doors. Although there is a door that connects to the choir loft. Anywhere, it's technically completely free. It's run by volunteers who come here for a two week stint. We pilgrims are put to work by the volunteers. One pilgrim became the head chef. In one of the pictures you see Jill chopping vegetables for dinner. Others were given mops to clean up from the previous visitors. There is a donation box. The money pays for the groceries and other supplies. We slept on the floor in a large room on very comfy mats. Once I got ear plugs out, I was able to sleep through all the snoring. There was a pilgrim's Mass at 7:00 p.m. A dozen or so older local ladies attended, which I found rather impressive. The volunteers were very kind, and it was nice to spend time with other people doing the walk.Read more

      Day 12: To Grañón

      May 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

The vineyards have turned to grain. It was a beautiful hike today through multiple shades of green. Long trails into the horizon were dotted with pilgrims making their way to their next stop. I (only) did about 16 miles or 25 kilometers today but by 2:30 this afternoon my feet were done so I enjoyed a nice sandwich and vino tinto and called it a day. Later in the day I went to a Pilgrims blessing at the church. (I didn’t understand a word, but it was still impressive.) Speaking of language barriers, afterwards I enjoyed a nice pilgrims meal at the albergue. There were four French, two Polish, two Austrian’s, one Spaniard and me. Only one Austrian and one of the French women spoke some English and were able to translate enough for me to understand the various conversations. One of the most wonderful aspects of the Camino are all the wonderful people you meet from all around the world and at you truly do all have the same goal. And, although many speak English, I do wish I spoke another language or two.Read more

      Azofra to Grañón

      April 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today was a bit mentally challenging for me (this is Kim). It started with the realization that I’d left my new rain poncho in the last place we stayed, followed by also discovering that I’d lost my favorite baseball hat somewhere along the way! Misplacing things isn’t a new thing for me, as all who know me can attest to, but every single item in my pack has been carefully chosen and has a specific & useful purpose. It just took the wind out my sails and I was feeling pretty down for the first portion of our hike. About 7 miles into our day, we came through a small town with a fully functional country club and golf pro shop. I can’t begin to describe how random it was in the middle of a semi-abandoned town. Sister to the rescue….Aimee insisted I go buy a new hat, and when I came out, she had a glass of wine and a chocolate napoleon waiting ❤️ It’s the little things that make a big difference out here.

Our 22.5k (14 mile) day brought us to the most unique habitation yet at Albergue de peregrinos de San Juan Bautista in Grañón. The albergue is a donativo, which houses 40 pilgrims a night. Sleeping arrangements were a bit challenging—mats on the floor in the top floor of the monastery, but the communal dinner with a gathering of peregrinos from around the world 🌎 🕯️made it worth it.

      Camino Conversion

      September 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

I'm a convert but not the kind you might be thinking off. I went from walking pilgrim to cycling pilgrim.
Took the bus down to Logrono, the bike was all set up by Eugenio, and we added two bags and I was out the door in less than half an hour. It feels great to be back on the road again. I feel bad about not being a walking pilgrim. However the intention of the pilgrimage remains the same. The Camino has its reasons. Upon coming through Santo Domingo I met a group of cyclists who waved me to join them. They are from Chile and I'll look to ride with them tomorrow.Read more
