      Estella

      September 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

We decided to take a rest day today before a long day tomorrow. Took a short 2.7 mile walk into Estella and then had a great day hanging with friends, visiting the Decathlon store for a couple of things and then more hanging out until a Pilgrim’s dinner. It was a really fun, chill day and well deserved.Read more

      To Estella

      September 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

It became obvious to us today that our memories from five years left out some of the more grueling aspects of this journey. Our memory of today’s short, steep hill in reality was not short, but a very long, steep path that went on forever. I told Alan our brains must have glossed over some of these hard sections and just emphasized all of the good. 🙂

Besides that, The morning was beautiful walking towards and then through the towns of Cirauqui and Lorca. Then the early afternoon heat hit hard and it seemed Estella would never get closer. After a needed popsicle/ice cream bar break, we broke out our reflective umbrellas! They really helped keep the worst of the heat off of our heads. We’re praying for some cooler temperatures. 🙏

      Special Person of the Day:

Nestor - Nestor is originally from Argentina and he hosted us at his pension tonight. He does not speak English, but through Google translate he showed us so much kindness - making sure we were drinking enough water on our journey and that it was ok to take a bus if needed. I think we must have looked pretty wiped out. 🥵😂 He also served us an amazing paella dinner, explaining to us the local ingredients used. It was the best we have had so far on this trip.

It’s now almost 10:00 pm. Our room is in the old part of Estella and we can look down onto the street and see families with kids walking around, visiting and playing plus a group of teenagers rolling a couch down the street on top of a shopping cart. 🤣

      The Most Irritating Fact:

Biting flies/insects seem to be attracted to me (probably because I sweat so bad) and like to bite me. 😡

      The Most Surprising Moment:

3/4 through our walk today, when we were low on energy, we came across a donation only food stand for pilgrims. I can honestly say I didn’t expect to eat toast with olive oil along the trail -Yummy and a big morale booster!

      I Remembered!

      June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Another great pilgrim dinner! And this time I remembered to take a picture before I scarfed it all down.

The menu said fried rice with vegetables, but I think it was couscous. I recognized zucchini, some orange squash, and slivered almonds. I’d already eaten a wonderful salad as my first course and the portions were so generous that I couldn’t finish the second course! (I still had room for the yogurt with fruit that was served for dessert.)

All for 14 euros each. Amazing bargain.

We sat next to another father-son couple that we had met on the trail the other day. They ordered two different main courses than Sean and I had. I told our waitress that I wanted to live here so that I could eat here every day! Yum!

Some pictures from our walk back to the albergue, including a mosaic done in leaves and flower petals.

      Estella!

      August 2, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Pauze in Estella!

      Sternenweg

      August 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Estella

      June 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

This City has surprised and delighted me.

For some reason I expected a smaller town. Estella is a bustling combination of old and new. As I strolled into town I stopped at the Albergue Municipal (local gov't funded cheap lodging for pilgrims). I was debating between the 8€ solution or pushing onward towards a smaller unknown town up the road and mentioned that it made more sense to visit the wine fountain in the evening vs. the morning. Asunción, the Albergue manager laughed and said, "I'm meeting a friend at the bar next door. I'll buy you a glass of wine!"

And that's how I decided to stay at the Albergue.

It turned out to be two lovely ladies named Asunción with whom I enjoyed two glasses of Rioja. They gave me the inside scoop on sightseeing in Estella as well as some tips for the next stages of the Camino.

Meeting people is often the best part of travel.

Further evidence of that: my friend Carrie took a cab back from Los Arcos because she wanted to see Estella, so we meandered up a hill to take in the view then over to the church for beautiful stained glass and a famous cloister area. I admit that I find the notion of cloistered clergy to be borderline absurd, but then there are plenty of things in life that I don't understand very well... And the architecture is interesting.

We had an ok paella in the main square then she headed back to Los Arcos and I enjoyed some wine with Dean, Bruce, Rory and Sinead.

The albergue proved a quiet and pleasant place to sleep. I'm glad that I stopped.
