      No lights in San Nicolas

      August 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Davide recommended to stay in San Nicolas, which is a special place in front of an ancient bridge! The former chapel was rebuilt by an Italian couple! They only accept 12 guest for a reason (the 12 apostles)! We cook and eat together, there is a ritual food washing and after dinner there is no light available but candles! The beds are basic but clean! Let’s see this as an experience! I explored that the guy next to ne snores 🤦🏼, so I have to sleep quickly! The washing rooms are in a separate room and surprisingly clean and new! I went to the next little village to eat at least something (patatas bravas) - but it was very depressing!Read more

      Boadilla del Camino

      September 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Miasto puste bez sklepu, z dwoma schroniskami i to wszystko.

      September 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We stayed at a pretty unique place last night: a small chapel converted to host pilgrims on their way to Santiago by an Italian Confraternity. They wore their ceremonial cloaks, they bathed our feet, kissed our feet and then cooked us a proper Italian dinner. Pasta carbonara, salad, bread, wine and a potato chorizo concoction. Mark and I were exhausted from a 30km walk and welcomed the hospitality. We dined by candle light as the chapel didn't have electricity.

Afterwards, our Italian guests took us outside and made us dance to Italian pop music from the 1960s and then sing a song that represented our home country. Our Italian host picked the song for Mark and I - Born in the USA by Springsteen - and belted it like he was at Shea Stadium in 1983.

      The dinner

      August 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

First we got an ancient christian footwashing, followed by a blessing! The dinner was very special- lasagna, Tortillas and Cheese with Serano followed by a local cake! Even the head of the Galizien Camino association joined us! All just with candles!Read more

      San Nicholas albergue Puente Fitero

      September 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We were so lucky to find this gem of a hostel. It is a very old hospital for pilgrims that is now run by an Italian association. They provide dinner, breakfast and roof over our heads for a donation. The meal was spectacular. We had pasta and our second course was meat and potatoes. Fruit and cake for dessert. And of course all the bread and wine we could stuff in our mouths. Nice to have some good old Italian pasta after all that paella. Our hosts are most entertaining
They did a foot washing ceremony before dinner to symbolize Jesus washing his apostle’s feet.
We had so much fun at dinner. We dined with Portugal, Italy, Venezuela, England and Poland.
We all helped clean up and now we are about to be serenaded but some of our talented pilgrims. I sat beside a young girl who has 3 of her songs on Spotify. Her name is Maya Von and she is very good. All of this is by candlelight as there is no electricity

National Holiday & Walk to Boadilla

      October 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      Highpoints for today:
Walk out of town with last night's full moon visible

Mist over the town as the sun rose.

Jamon, cheese sandwiches (actually had tuna in my ham & cheese sandwich for breakfast! It is called a "Vegetable sandwich" at the bar we bought it at. I didn't ask questions. 🙃We were told everything was going to be closed today so we weren't sure we could even get food today, so anything we found open today was a plus. (We'll report on the little box of Vino Tinto we bought at the supermercado for 1.5 euros at a later date)

      Low point for today:
The long, sunny, no shade, stone path for the last 2 hours into our destination town.

The part of the Camino we are on is considered hard mentally & emotionally because it is wide vistas & rolling hills of brown fields for miles at a time. It can be very monotonous. I am trying to see the beauty in its simplicity.

      What I'm grateful for today:
      Green when we see it.
      Cold Beer
      Hot shower
      Jamon y queso
      Vino tinto...maybe?

      The camino provides

      September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We woke up with rain and then the rain stopped. The forecast didn't look very good, but hey, on other days the forecast was worse than the weather. So maybe today it wouldn't be too bad. I left early and it felt warm. Just had my raincoat nearby but t-shirt and shorts seemed more than enough.
The first part of the day was a pretty steep climb from the picturesque vintage Castrojeriz. And what comes up has to come down so then there was the 18% decline. And with the decline the wind picked up and soon it started to rain. Rivers of water were following down. So I needed to be careful descending. My shoes filled up quickly with water. My shorts, t-shirt and the thin raincoat made me cold. But because of the strong rain I didn't want to open my backpack to search for a sweater.
After a long descent I saw a small church and I entered. It was actually a church converted into an Albergue. And the Italian hospitalera saw me enter, all cold and shivering and she offered me an espresso. This was the best coffee of the day and warmed up my body and my soul. I then helped the lady with taking down chairs from the table and after a little while I continued my camino. I arrived in Frómista around noon. And luckily I did. It had started to rain again 10 minutes before I arrived but it didn't stop for 3 more hours. I was fine. But after me many pilgrims were soaked to the bones.

Trader Joe’s

      April 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more
