Day 7: Villa Franca de Bierzo to Laguna

      April 12 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Another long walk! 17 miles this time. Forgot to say, it ended up being a hot one! I think it was in the 80s. I was lucky to find a store that sold sun tan lotion. I forgot ours. But we did get some sun burn first.
What a beautiful day. Started off for quite a few miles walking on the road. No ones favorite. But finally went to mountains in a distance and country roads.
The last 3 miles or so was all up hill!! I will admit, at one point I may have thrown a temper tantrum. Why are we going all the way to Laguna?? There is a place to stay before that which works just as well. I lost. Patrick persisted.
In the end, after I barely survived getting up to the top of the mountain, it was magical. So many people we met along the way were here. This is the only alburgue so it was nice to see people we might not have seen for a few days.
After dinner, some young people got together and one was playing guitar and people were signing. Very nice!
      10 pm now. Lights out.
Tomorrow we go further up the mountain and down, down, down.

Tag 34 Villafranca Lalaguna de Castilla

      June 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

      June 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Read more

      Etappe 23 - La Laguna 2

      October 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

In La Laguna gegen 15 Uhr erschöpft, aber glücklich angekommen.
Herberge wieder 10 Personen in einem Raum. Aus unserer gestrigen Auberge alle wiedergetroffen. Hier geht wahrscheinlich keiner verloren.

      Trabadelo to O Cebreiro 21km

      April 8 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 5 °C

So started out raining lightly. I brought an old raincoat that I used previously on the West Coast Trail.....well....it wasn't as water proof as I thought🥴

Anyway, I felt good and things were great until the light rain became a Classic Galicia Downpour!!!! Luckily there was a bar that was open after walking in it for an hour.

My 3 German friends stopped there as well. We decided as a group to press on to the next village 5 km away.

It was so muddy and impossible to keep ones feet dry🥴

When we reached the next Village it stopped raining and the sun even came out. Christian said she wanted to keep walking with me as our paces were similar.

We headed out after eating ( tortilla & cafe con leche) and this is where things started to fall apart.....

It started to rain and the trail was extremely muddy and getting steeper and steeper. We knew of we held on that La faba was 7 km away and there was an albergue there.

We arrived there and it was just pouring!!!! I was soaking wet ( should have brought my Camino rain gear 🥶) and we found out the Albergue didn't open until 2 pm.....it was 12 noon.
There was nothing open in this town.....so....we decided to keep walking.

Up and up and up....the rain turned into sleet......then into snow.....but we kept trudging along. We didn't have a choice to stop anyway. I did briefly to snap a few pics but honestly the low cloud hang obliterated the magnificent view!!

This is the highest altitude on the whole Camino.

We finally reached our Albergue at 2 pm. Shortly after arriving it started to snow even heavier. I saw a big snowplow that had been on the highway I think?

No stores were open so I settled on an Empanada.

We were able to dry our clothes but my boots are not really dry. I hope tomorrow they will be better.

The Albergue has 18 pilgrims or so.....It is toasty warm which is wonderful There are over 60 beds in one enormous room.

This has been quite the day!!
But shoutout to Merino wool and my Injinji socks!!!!! No blisters and I kept my core temp warm even though I was drenched.

      Montée accomplie

      May 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      O Cebreiro

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Mijn ambitie is zo veel mogelijk km's!

O Cebreiro, the top of the world!

      May 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We are here, all assembled, Amr climbed the mountain on foot, I had a lovely taxi ride and Rachel and Richard flew and bussed in from America!! And this is such a great place to meet, and for the third time we are lucky with the weather and have magnificent 360° views. We are now in Galicia, different language (just dialect) and food and wine. And it is colder, Amr didn’t take off his fleece while walking up, and I have kept my jacket on all day. I was the first arrival, getting here by very scenic taxi ride at about 12.30, and I think being early we have the best room as she asked if I’d prefer a matrimoniale bed or 2 beds, so of course I said matrimoniale and it is so nice - on a corner with 2 windows, and reasonable size…she sort of indicated first in lucky, and I do remember other times having 2 beds in a rather tiny room! And Amr arrived at about 1 having left at 8.30 - 4 and a half hours of hard walking! We had a plate of pulpo and a glass of Alberiño to sustain him!

But of course the highlight of the day is meeting Rachel and Richard!! They had a smooth trip over, as smooth as travel these days can be, and made all their connections and got a bus to here from Santiago airport. They arrived about 2.30 and what a reunion! They have a room next to ours, very handy. They must be exhausted and jet lagged, but we had a ColaCao in our bar, and went walking round this tiny village in case the weather changes tomorrow. It’s not meant to, but you can never tell. So we marvelled at the all round views, and walked even further up the hill to the cross way up high. Lovely views from there.

Now we are having some downtime till 6.30 when we’ll meet and go to the pilgrim mass with them at 7, and then have dinner by which time I’m sure they will be ready to crash!!

    • Trabadelo to O Cebreiro

      October 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Elly, our host at El Puente Peregrino, is an excellent and creative cook and she fed us and our Danish friends Penny and Frank a beautiful meal last night. Red lentil curry, Shakshouka, and chocolate brownies all accompanied by vino tinto of course. Elly also left us a basket of goodies for a predawn breakfast.

      Today was another big contrast.

We spent the first four hours walking up the Valcarce river valley. We walked along the verge of a quiet road which has mostly been replaced by a motorway we could see in the distance. The river in a steep sided valley was rarely more than 20m from our path and it’s sound was a relaxing backdrop.

We passed through a village every couple of kms and stopped for lunch at Las Herrerías, 12km up the slowly climbing valley.

In various places small herds of dairy cows grazed in the riverside meadows, their cowbells tinkling peacefully..

After Las Herrerías the final 7kms to O Cebreiro was dramatically different and physically demanding. We rose 800m in altitude sometimes climbing along narrow rock strewn paths with 13% slope.

Towards the end of that climb we crossed the provincial border into Galicia, our sixth and last province on this camino.
