    Roncesvalles to Larrasoaña

    May 13, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Walked 27 km today with a very steep downhill section, which my right knee decided it didn't like. 😕
A lot of the walk was through beautiful forest paths.
I'll do a short day into Pamplona tomorrow without such a steep descent.
It was a clear day that started out pretty chilly - about 38°, but by the time I arrived at the albergue I had abandoned all my layers.

    Roncesvalles to Larrasoaña

    June 23, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We hiked from Roncesvalles to Larrasoaña today - around 17 miles. We were a tad bit tuckered this afternoon at the end because we definitely did not eat enough along the way, and plan to do better tomorrow.

We are staying at the Albergue San Nicolas which has been very nice! I have a top bunk again- maybe, by the time this journey ends, I will master the getting up and getting down. As it is now, I’m sure there are people on the Camino who will tell stories of the woman from WA USA who cannot seem to do it gracefully 😂

Our hosts served a scrumptious meal for dinner tonight - minestrone soup, pasta salad, pork, and red peppers with garlic and olive oil. Plenty of red wine 🍷 and cheesecake for dessert. Earlier, for lunch, Alan and I shared some paella 🥘. Alan was in heaven! The owner of the bar gave us samples of his friend’s wine and refused to let us pay for it. Very relaxing place with Nora Jones music 🎶 playing in the background. Tomorrow, we go to Pamplona.

    Roncesvalles 24 km

    August 31, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Read more

    Larrasoana 28 km

    September 1, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Taking it easy

    May 8, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After the Pyrenees, I've decided to walk shorter distances the past couple days-- 15km yesterday, and about 5km today. That's less than many folks do in one day, but so what? It's not a race, I'm enjoying the ride-- and getting stronger!

No major mountains, but days filled with constant climbs working my lungs and heart, and descents beating up legs and feet. No complaints though-- this is beautiful countryside, and I couldn't have asked for better weather.

Tonight I'm staying in a cute pensión run by a young Italian and Polish couple (who met in Denmark and moved to Spain!) Tomorrow I head into Pamplona, about 15km away. I'll miss running with the bulls, but will enjoy seeing the city-- maybe even stay an extra day.

Roncesvalles to Larrasoana - 25 kms

    September 29, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

I'll start with last night's dinner. There were four at the table, French, German, Danish, and me. No one spoke French but the frenchie, and the others had trouble with my accent. It was a quiet meal.

This am was cool and dark as I started after a breakfast of toast, jam, coffee and juice. Watched the sun rise, the mist in the fields, my quads angry with me from yesterday, school bells, kids riding their bikes to school, wives bringing in firewood, and pilgrims walking.

Stopped at a Mercado for an apple, at another for juice and a muffin, and yet another for some cookies and water. Ran across the same person from Australia and we shared a few miles together.

Upon leaving Roncesvalles, an English pilgrim behind me had a flashlight so I let him pass and got into his footsteps. We conversed for a couple of miles and ran into him again at the albergue I am staying at this evening.

Lunch was canned tuns, a banana, and a cookie from the Mercado right next door so a midnight snack is a possibility.

Today was a true test of my conditioning as it was 25 kms and the terrain was hilly, rocky, and at times the footing was a challenge, but I'm here and look forward to a shorter walk tomorrow to Pamplona.

The world is the same, we just try to make things different.

My rommies tonight are two Israelis, a German, and not sure of the other. Just hope none of them snore or all bets are off.

    June 24, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Read more
