We’re not in Kansas anymore Toto!

      May 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Peg woke up at zero dark thirty and got me down to SeaTac. Headed off losing my luggage in Charlotte by asking why my baggage claim didn’t say Madrid! Made it to gate D 18 before realizing I wanted D2. There’s a little Starbucks above a lower terminal in the D wing that was entirely deserted at 5 am, so I had a nice quiet breakfast sandwich without a mask. Going to say I was in the 2% of people who were masked, less in CharlotteBoy it was nice to be only sitting 2-4-2 across in Premium Economy, rather than 3-6-3 in coach. Madrid airport makes any airport in the US seem tiny. It serves incoming flights from Africa, South America, Europe and North America. Mistake número uno….I should have budgeted a few days in Madrid. Besides obviously missing the Capitol of Spain it would have also buffered a late flight, but I was entirely on time. A mile at least of linear moving sidewalk, made it to a bathroom, then four long escalators to an underground train, then up three long escalators, to a Disney maze into passport control, past the four heavily armed soldiers, down two escalators, another maze to Sanitation control to check my Spain issued QR code/health form, had it pointed out that my vaccination card was not EU (which was in the QR code), another maze to a nurse who glanced at my vaccine card in the most cursory way and passed me to baggage claim. Each maze had 20-30 Spanish ladies to keep you headed in the right direction or down the correctly colored line. Got my bag and found my first Spanish amigo, Hector. Hector lives in Léon, but drives his Prius taxi to Madrid. Wow if you want to have a total crack up, watch two guys, neither of whom really speaks the others language try to have conversation during a four and a half drive at 120 km/hr on a windy 2 lane highway racing huge trucks and the odd BMW. Hector has agreed to drive me on Domingo (had to look it up) through the icky side of industrial Léon to a much nicer start in La Virgen. The last hour and a half was through the vaunted Meseta a vast stretch of wheat fields and A LOT of enormous windmills. My impression overall was very similar to driving around Davis or the Northern Sacramento Valley. Large swathes of some purple flower and I lucked out…the poppies are blooming everywhere like mad and they are generally redder than ours.

I had enough energy to try to walk accidentally happened upon the cathedral and found the Wise Pilgrim recommended Four Lions brewpub in search for the local wheat beer called zerep. Unfortunately they didn’t have very much in terms of a selection I chose an IPA since most of the others were a more common large distribution brand. I got pan y jamón as an included tapas. A lady started choking and I was able to help a little. On the way back I got talked into a tapas and wine dinner by Ishmael and Tyrep (from Turkey)

Von manzillas de las mulas nach Leon.

      May 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Read more

      Swine time

      April 15 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Well, I've cracked the shits. Which, when you're travelling is sort of a double whammy as not only are you bummed, you feel like an ungrateful swine.

It all came on very suddenly, and I suspect it's like when you watch drops of rain on a window - occasionally, two or three will band together, and, picking up momentum, race down the pane, gobbling up others as they go.

      My raindrops are probably:

      - weariness from back pain (it grinds you down, and it started 254km ago)
      - self consciousness from tan lines (I feel like a stupid pink fleshy tourist)
      - homesickness (people, vegetables, being understood).

Soon, this mega-drop will splatter on the windowsill and dissipate. To help that along, I'd quite like to have a cry. Unfortunately, my tears follow a tropical schedule - over the year we have extended dry periods, followed by a build up, and then the wet season. We are potentially in the build up? It's too early to say.

Instead I have come back to the very nice hostel, rented a proper towel, had a long shower with a newly purchased exfoliating glove and scrubbed myself raw, made tea and toast, and told myself I can put off updating here and dinner plans and everything for a bit and just sit. I don't even have to go out tonight if I don't feel like it.

I'm very alright, and tomorrow I'll go back to being absolutely in love with it all again.

      April 6 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Day 1 was a success. Did good with the metro and train. Got into Leon and ate lunch. We were both exhausted. So got an alburgue for the night. Tomorrow, we take a bus for 30 min to Hospital del Obrigo where we will start our walk.
Shared a meal with 2 ladies. The place we are staying is so nice.

      Leon

      May 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

It’s been a surprisingly good day. I walked a short distance for breakfast and passed the Gaudí Museum, Botines House, and hopefully I will be able to visit it later in the week.

I made an appointment to see a physio who specialises in pilgrim injuries and who was luckily just around the corner from my hotel. She was excellent and feels that I will be able to begin again on Saturday but doing not more than 20kms a day for a while. She showed me the correct way to strap my foot and I was able to video it so that I can do it correctly myself next time.

I ended my day outdoors by having lunch right outside the cathedral which is also near my hotel.

I am feeling much more positive now and am back to planning the next part of my Camino.

      Fromista to Leon

      May 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I spent a nice morning having numerous coffees with people I have met over the last few weeks. Said a sad goodbye to Lesley. We came into each other’s lives at just the right time and were able to cheer each other up and keep each other company for a few days.

I was so lucky to be in a town with a train station. I caught the midday train to Palencia which was interesting and busy. Then the 4pm train to Leon. My hotel for the week is right in the centre of town and I am hoping my foot recovers enough in a few days to see everything.

It was sad to rush through the countryside from Fromista to Leon but I am very keen to get back walking on the weekend.

      Leon ….. still

      May 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

I had another visit to the physio today and I am hoping I will be leaving Leon in the morning to restart my Camino.

I had breakfast and then lunch with other pilgrims near the Cathedral. Five days of sitting and resting and eating in Leon was not what I had planned but it’s been a nice break. But I am looking forward to tomorrow!

Tag 27 Leon nach Villadangos del Paramo

      May 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Read more

      Leon cathedral

      June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

The Cathedral of Santa María de Regla de León is a temple of Catholic worship , episcopal see of the Diocese of León , Spain , consecrated under the patronage of the Virgin Mary . It was the first monument declared in Spain by Royal Order of August 28, 1844 (confirmed by Royal Order on September 24, 1845).
Initiated in the XIIIth century, itis one of the greatest works of the Gothic style, with French influences. Also known as the Pulchra Leonina, which means ‘Beautiful Leonese’, León Cathedral is mostly known for taking the “dematerialization” of gothic art to the extreme, that is, the reduction of the walls to their minimum expression to be replaced by stained glass, constituting one of the largest collections of medieval stained glass in the world.

Walking Day 1, León to Villar de Mazarif

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Walking through Leon was difficult for me because the yellow arrows were difficult to see while watching for traffic and the uneven pavement ect. Sad to say that because of my vision i would not be able to do urban sections solo. Once outside the city, i did well. I'm glad i made the commitment to learn some español, it was very useful today. I spoke with an older local man who visited his professor son in Mexico recently, and also my albergues roommate from Chile, A kind S Korean woman gave us fresh cherries. The only annoyance is the rude cyclist that fly by with no warning and don't give me. any berth. I'm learning to look behind me and hold my poles horizontal to force them over. We stopped for coffee and baño at an improv stand asking only for donations. He had a world map and asked us to put a marker dot on our home location. It's so amazing that I am actually here and doing this! (i just teared up writing that) My feet, however are not that thrilledRead more
