      Da ist sie!

      August 6, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Cala Taulera near Mahon Menorca

      May 3, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Yesterday we walked around the headland to Cala Macarella and had a coffee at the cafe there before visiting the previously inhabited caves. From the look of the floor the main residents now are goats, had a lovely swim around the bay on our return to the boat and saw 4rays (fish).
We spent today cruising along the south coast of Menorca, we had hoped to anchor up in Cala Covas, said to be one of the most stunning anchorages in the Balearic Islands, but a bit to much swell. We popped into lots of other Calas on the way round, definitely worth a mention is Cala Alcaufa a little built up but still lovely however ended up here Cala Taulera near the capital which is OK as we need to do a bit of shopping, and look for some parts. For those who are interested we think we need a new gypsy wheel for anchor winch as the chain is slipping and jumping, but only sometimes. There are two other boats here, one is fine the other when we arrived appeared to be drifting onto the rocks, once anchored we could see someone apparently pushing it off so rowed over to see if we could assist. We ended up re-laying 2of the anchors, the engine and rudder are broken and owner can’t move the boat. However looking at it now it looks like anchors didn’t hold but as the owner has gone and doesn’t appear bothered we have decided we won’t be either.

      Ausflug nach Mahon mit Hafenrundfahrt

      September 29, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Read more

      Parc Natural Albufera Es Grau

      April 27, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

After landing at about 9:30am we picked up the car and headed straight (via the supermarket) to the nearby National Parc. We were welcomed by the park warden who showed us a small exhibition and gave us a map of the walking routes. We then set off and walked for a couple of hours around paths with spectacular views over the lake. The variety of flowers and plants was amazing, lots of which were humming with bees. We had a picnic of tortilla espanol (much better than you can buy in the UK) before heading on the road to Cala Galdana, our home for the next few days. The view of the cove that met us when we arrived was breathtaking. We took in the view from the hotel with a gin and tonic and a no gin and tonic. We ate at a lovely authentic seafood restaurant in Ferreries called Meson Rias Baixas where we shared a salad, some grilled octopus and a seafood Paella.Read more

      Mahon, Menorca

      July 4, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Another beautiful port city in Spain, this one on the island of Menorca. We took a walk around the port and up the winding hill into the lovely town center (see other Mahon footprint). Could live here, more so than any other place visited yet. Weather not so hot as some other parts, relaxed, awesome!Read more

      Mahon, Menorca

      May 29, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The wind changed in the early hours and was now on the nose as we continued to head SW towards Menorca. We seemed to be making very little headway in the direction that we wanted to go, so at 08.00 I turned on the engine and we motorsailed at about 3.5 knts into what had by now become a lumpy sea.

Luckily the sea began to calm as we got into the shelter of the island and with the fuel gauge showing we still had enough diesel to motor the rest of the way, we increased speed as the seas calmed.

The weather had also improved and was now nice and warm again so we were back in t-shirts and as a result the mood aboard had greatly improved. We were looking forward to getting ashore after two nights at sea.

We reached to mouth of the Mahon Harbour which reminded me much of Cork Harbour. It had a narrow entrance, widening inside with a couple of islands and protected by gun emplacements. It's a large harbour and about five kilometres in length with many forts.

We motored slowly into the harbour taking in the sights as we headed towards our berth.
I had booked a berth before I left Ireland as I had heard that it's a very busy place but when we called on the vhf we got no answer.
We motored up and down the quay hoping to attract the attention of someone from the Club Maritimo. Well, it was a Sunday and it was during the siesta, what did we expect!

From the pilot book I had a rough idea where the club's berths were so I picked an empty spot and reversed into the space and we tied onto the quay.
It was now 15.00 so we had a bit of lunch as Paul rang Laura his wife, to let her know we had arrived. Laura had flown in from their home in Spain and had joined her sister and brother in law who were already holidaying on the island. She would be joining us till we reached Alicante.
Also joining us later today was my sister in law Máirín O'Donovan and her friend Chris Browne who are both experienced sailors.

Alex our marinero arrived as the siesta finished. He proved to be very helpful during our stay and had a great sense of humour. Best of all, he was happy to leave us in our berth so we didn't have to move.

We went to the club to book in and to freshen up.
Later Laura arrived and stowed her gear aboard before she and Paul went to join her family for dinner.

Mick and I picked a restaurant close to our berth and had a nice dinner.
He had decided rather than stay till Mallorca that he was going to head home the following morning which I was sorry to hear. I tried to change his mind but he had it made up.
I had noticed that he had got very tired on this leg which was probably the reason. It's easy to forget that none of us are as young as we once were.

After dinner I got a taxi to the airport to pick up Máirín and Chris. Once back aboard I found space for everyone. Luckily there are seven berths on Eureka as we had six bodies that night which is the most I've ever had aboard.

The crew had the cabins while the skipper slept in the saloon among the baggage. Something was not right!

      Leg 2 - 224 mls. Total 398 mls.

      A day off in Mahon

      May 31, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

I decided that today that we’d spend it wandering around on our own, basically a day off for the crew.

Tomorrow we were setting off for an overnight voyage to Cala Pi in south east Majorca and I didn’t want any cabin fever building up onboard.
Sometimes if a group of people are cooped up aboard for a length of time, things can sometimes get heated and tempers short even among the best of crews and I have found that leaving people to do their own thing for a few hours every few days can take all the pressure out of things.
While the crew hadn’t been together long enough for that to happen and there was no signs of it anyway, I still thought it would be a good idea to let them be tourists, however that meant I ended up on my own.
Maybe that was good for the crew?

Paul and Laura headed off in one direction and Chris and Máirín in another.
I closed up the boat and headed off with my camera and Phil’s backpack.
Phil my mother in law had given me a backpack one Christmas. It has been one of the best presents I have ever got. It goes most places with me, sailing, trips to the shops, library etc etc. Thank you Phil.

I had found out that the British had occupied the island between 1708 and 1802 following the war of Spanish Succession and used the harbour as an anchorage for the British fleet, even Nelson was stationed there at one time.
As a result some British influences in architecture are still seen today such as bow and sash windows that you find nowhere else in Spain.

Most of the town is high above the harbour so there is a bit of a climb to get to the main sights.
There were good views of the harbour and Eureka from the top.
Menorca is known for its gin, again a British influence, so I bought a bottle and when I arrived back at the boat I was presented with a second larger bottle by Laura and Paul.

Paul and Laura had taken a boat trip around the harbour and were able to give us chapter and verse of the various buildings and their histories, that we had sailed around the previous day.

Máirín and Chris did their own thing and whatever that was, they weren’t telling!

Máirín had picked up a bug probably on the plane and or while swimming yesterday and was beginning to feel unwell so she and Chris ate onboard that night while the rest of us eat ashore.

Tomorrow I was looking forward to heading back to sea and the next leg, shortening the voyage home.

      Splashing around in Cala Taulera

      May 30, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Michael was leaving today so while the rest of the crew were still asleep I saw him off, as he headed for the airport.
I was sad to see him go and had hoped he'd stay a few more days as he had done the hard work of getting us to here and the next few days were now going to be fairly relaxing.
I'll be forever grateful to him for his help and advice in the early days of planning the voyage home and for crewing to Menorca.

Alex had told us that Cala Taulera was a lovely place to visit, so despite Paul and I still being tired, we decided a short sail there would be perfect for bedding in the new crew for the sail to Mallorca.
We invited Laura's sister Ann and her husband Jeff to join us for the day.

We left the berth at 11.30 and stopped at the fuel dock to fill up. We were not going to make the same mistake twice!
Strangely we had no problem filling up this time and it turned out we still had about 30 litres left in the tank when we arrived yesterday.

Leaving the dock, we hoisted the sails and had a nice gentle broad reach down the harbour.
I took a back seat as Máirín took the helm as we sailed passed Ille De Rei with its old fever hospital and then past Isla del Lazareto before turning north into Cala Taulera.

We discovered a nice sheltered bay with about six yachts already anchored there but with still plenty of room.
We dropped the sails and prepared to anchor Eureka for the first time.
Eureka has an electrical windlass but as I discovered, it only works then lifting the anchor, it's freefall when dropping it.
Everything went as planned and soon Máirín and Chris were swimming off the stern while the rest of us just just got started on the wine and beer.

We had a lovely salad for lunch washed down with some cerveza and vino as we chatted, swam and lazed around for the afternoon.

We headed back to the berth under genny alone before freshening up and heading for dinner.

Mmmm, this is what sailing is all about.

      Distance 5mls. Total 403 mls.

Tag 7: Kein Radeln, trotzdem Spaß

      October 24, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C
