Day 25: Mansilla to León, part 1

      June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

      Mileage: 13 miles
      Altitude gain: 492 feet
      Altitude loss: 354 feet
      Weather: cool, partly cloudy, perfect
      Total mileage: 300 miles!

I awoke to a sleepy Sunday morning village, so I headed out without breakfast. The guidebook suggested I consider taking a bus and skipping a hard and potentially dangerous day along the highway, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was some walking along the highway, but most of it wasn’t on the shoulder (which is what I had imagined). Also, I accidentally ended up doing this walk on a Sunday, so the traffic was very light.

Today was the last day on the meseta, so accordingly there were lots of fields until the outskirts of León. The last two weeks will be more varied in scenery but I’ll have to prepare myself for mountains again!

      1. The old wall around Mansilla
      2. and 3. Very peaceful beginning to the day
      4. I love these sweet morning faces
      5. Camino art
      6. Medieval bridge over the Río Esla
      7. and 8. I’ll kind of miss the fields!
      9. Early view of León. If you zoom in you can see the cathedral on the far right.
      10. The Río Torío at the edge of León

Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon

      June 13 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Today was the day for the 18.8 walk into Leon -much despised but I enjoy it. I love the first view of Leon that you get from the path. Mansilla de las Mulas is a very underrated little town. Most people seem to walk to the start along the regular route which reaches the modern, rather unprepossessing, outskirts of the town and then get the bus into Leon. It has a lovely traditional centre with interesting traditional shops and cafes and and great restaurant where we had a delicious meal. A beautiful river with a bathing beach and Roman walls and entrance gate. So I would always advise stopping there before Leon (La Curiosa restaurant isn’t open on a Tuesday!)
First sight of Leon is always a joy and the walk in is very exciting for me as Leonni’s my favourite city. I’m also very fond of their tradition of providing substantial pinchos with any drinks you order - sounds like I’m obsessed with food but think it’s that I’m usually hungry on the camino.
After breakfast at Puente de Villarente I wandered on to Leon and the cathedral stopping off at the hiking shop to get some new ends for my poles as the old ones have worn through.
The cathedral was supreme as always. Visited properly later in the afternoon. The stained glass is so beautiful.
Met up with David at the cathedral and Keith on the way in. Nick and Paul were in a bit of a different schedule so didn’t see them other than in passing.
Room in San Martin hotel is good and luckily quiet as Leon is a very lively town at night.
Food at Ecolmado like last year- empanada delicious.
My knee was much better today - I felt strong again which is a relief.
Drinks with David after visiting the cathedral. I had pacharán again which I really like but the serving was huge - bit ambitious for me as I don’t drink very much usually - but led to a good nights sleep.

      Into León

      October 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Today we had a fairly short walk (13 miles or so) into León. It’s a big city with a cathedral that we’re hoping to go see when it reopens this afternoon. If we get inside I’ll post some interior pictures!

The walk itself was uneventful. My feet are a little sore from the previous days walking over really rocky trails. But it was completely fine. The different thing that happened today was that there were dark clouds on the horizon. It wasn’t warm at all. A couple hours into our walk, it started to rain. It didn’t rain a whole lot, but it rained on and off for the last few hours of our walk into the city. We put on our ponchos to keep our bodies dry but also to keep our backpacks dry.

We had a weird experience. We went to our hotel, and the hotel receptionist told us that she had no record of our reservation. We booked through an agency back in May. Even though the agency had an email, confirming our reservation, the hotel wasn’t buying it. So we went to get something to eat, and the agency booked us a new hotel in the same area. I think the room is nicer and it even has a skylight! when we went to go pick up our bag in the old hotel to move it to the new hotel, the receptionist was talking, smack and trying to convince us that the agency screwed everything up and it was their fault. We just said OK yeah and went to our new hotel where they not only wanted to see us, but they also gave us a nice room.

So assuming we get into the Cathedral today, I think our visit to Leon will be really nice! Tomorrow we are walking out of the city and off to some random town, where a taxi is supposed to pick us up and take us to our lodging, which is in another random town. I am definitely going to call in the morning and make sure that all of those ducks are in a row because being stuck in a random town with no lodging does not sound like a fun way to spend the evening .

David’s back is much improved! We’re feeling great and getting excited every time we look at a mileage marker. Tomorrow we should be in the 200 km range! Although we’re having a wonderful time here in Spain, getting closer to our goal of reaching Santiago is really exciting!

Mansilla de las Mulas to León

      April 24 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 37 °F

      308 miles done. 192 to go. 62%!

There were no cars coming. I looked both ways. There wasn’t a cross walk, so I crossed. Immediately after getting to the other side of the street, two police officers appeared and motioned for me to come to them. Immediately there was a pit in my stomach. Was I going to be arrested for jaywalking?

The León police asked me for my passport. So, I got out my US passport and they looked at it and said excitedly, “Colorado!” What they really wanted though was my Camino passport. And out of one of their vests, they pulled their little stamp device in order to give me a stamp in my Camino passport. Then they said “Goodbye Colorado!” and walked away.

I’m so glad I’m not in jail for jaywalking. But now I have a fun police stamp in my Camino passport (see pics).

Toured the Cathedral, ate a huge lunch of pasta and cheese, did laundry, took a nap, met up with my Australian gals, late dinner. Tomorrow is a rest day here in León. Gonna do all the touristy things. Very long walk on Friday, so I’ll need the rest. Buenas noches!

      A Rather Damp Day

      October 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

So after sitting in the late afternoon sun in t-shirt and shorts, eating and drinking at our new favourite non bar, bar, this morning it was raining. Which was good news for Carol as she's got to try out her new rain cape, as her old one was destroyed by the wind on the first day out of Burgos.

Despite the rain and the wind getting up later in the morning, the terrain was pretty flat so we still made good progress. In fact it was probably wanting to get out of the rain that pushed us along to getting finished for about 12:15.

It continued raining all afternoon which meant that apart from a brief, wet walk, we spent the rest of the afternoon in the room and the hostel bar. I don't mind getting soaked while I'm out walking but once I'm showered, dressed and warm, the thought of going back out in the rain doesn't appeal at all.

So just 14 days of walking left now and it's starting to feel like this is going to be over before we know it.

Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon - time to

      June 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Aimed to leave at 6.30 but snoozed my alarm for the first time and then could not fit everything into my rucksack so had to do a complete repack. I bought some cherries and nuts, seeds, yoghurts etc last night and they were just too big to fit in so had to abandon two yoghurts and an energy bar. Sad but very necessary. Even then had half a packet of rice cakes hanging off my pack in a dry bag.
Finally left at about 7 expecting a horrible walk into Leon. I had been told that it would be 18 km literally on the hard shoulder of a busy A road and was definitely prepared for the worst.
However, either people were hugely exaggerating or the route has been altered but there was only about 50m of walking with the traffic and the rest was on tracks - sometimes close to the road but never on it and often in what felt like the middle of the countryside - although so close to Leon.
Stopped for coffee in Puente Villarente at what seemed to be a very popular local spot - and discovered the Leonaise tradition of giving tapas with the coffee - in this case a raisin croissant all for €1.40! Later spoke to one of the helpful policías who explained that this is the custom in the area of Leon - quite rare in Spain. I really appreciated the croissant with my coffee although I had brought my yoghurt, blueberries and seeds. I had to eat a second breakfast later as they were heavy and I was fed up with carrying them.
Arrived in Leon having got a great view of the cathedral from the hill i approached on. As with any city, initially the outskirts were a bit dull, although I really find any city in Spain fascinating as I spend my time trying to read all the shop signs. But once I passed through the Puerta Monada it was fabulous. Winding streets, beautiful architecture and buzzing with life. A huge contrast to my much missed Meseta but wonderful too.
Took my time reaching the cathedral by following the yellow arrows and then bumped into Caroline, Rachel and Mike on their way to the cathedral. I felt too hot and bothered and keen to get rid of my rucksack to join them so headed for the hotel, which is right by the cathedral.
After cooling down a bit and doing a bit of washing, Caroline and I went to the Casa Botines, which is a Gaudi building and the Gaudi museum in Leon. I love Gaudi and it was a fascinating place including descriptions of his techniques (which including the importance of recycling, and sunlight and air in his buildings - which seemed very ahead of his time), rooms set up to look as they would have done when it was built and many rooms of paintings.
The evening was a celebration of Nick’s 65th birthday. We joined him at the Patio and then went on to eat at an Italian style restaurant and a beautiful square which served huge pizzas.
It was a long, busy and very enjoyable day but I’m exhausted now and looking forward to a lie in tomorrow.

      Zu süss…

      October 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Lustig wars, was er erzählte!

Etappe 20 El Burgo Ranero- Mansilla

      October 3, 2021 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Unsere 20.

      Bilanz:
      -20,51km
      -41 Höhenmeter
      -465,52 kmGesamtstrecke
Heute gehts uns mal wieder richtig gut.

      In León angekommen

      September 17, 2021 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 10 °C
