      Shorter walk to Melide

      May 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Had breakfast in our rather sweet hotel, and the walkers set off at about 8.30. It was quite cold, and in fact I kept a jacket on till I met them soon after 12.30….so it was a fairly easy 4 hour walk…people weren’t staggering in today! I met my friend Marilina at the bus stop at 9.15, ready for the 9.30 bus, and to our amazement there were many many people also waiting! Thank goodness it turned out to be a full size bus…we wouldn’t all have fitted in a minibus. Many were going to Arzúa where we go tomorrow, as it is a long walk there from Palas de Rei, and they avoided that long one…but quite a few also got off at Melide. And that same but will leave from here tomorrow for Arzúa.

While we drove into town, I saw our hotel as we whizzed past, back down along the main road, so when deposited here at 10.15, I explored down to check if I wasn’t mistaken, and there it was, very nice but quite a long walk from the main centre…good to know, because as the pilgrims walk in it was easy to cut across to the hotel instead of going all the way up to the centre and back again. There was another nice group of Aussie girls from Albury/Wodonga staying here who I also warned…. So then I went up and walked in the centre, a nice little town…found the church, and the camino path through..many pulperias - octopus restaurants…sat in a park for a while and then walked back along the camino to meet them…at an old stone bridge which has been repaved and cleaned since last coming through.

Then we all went and checked into the hotel, we have a good room with a double bed - and even 2 separate pillows each!! - rather than 2 pushed together (always a triumph) and a closed in balcony with sun pouring in and a view to the countryside over the main road and buildings opposite. Washing drying there now. Had a drink in the bar here with R and R who had some big bocadillos and chips as at dinner time they will be at 8pm mass…we all shared a small cheese plate first…they are very proud of the local cheeses, and they are delicious.

Relaxing afternoon, Richard went to the laundromat and I did some nursey dressing on blisters on Rachel’s little toes. And some of the Aussies have an appointment for foot treatment a bit later!! R and R are going to mass at 8 pm and will have something after…rather an awkward time as restaurants don’t serve dinner till 7.30…so Amr and I are having dinner in the restaurant at the hotel at about 7.30.

Addendum…have to add that dinner was rather special! It was handy to go to the hotel restaurant but it was fabulous food… I went a bit mad and had 2 courses from the expensive menu - 2 first courses, and they were wonderful, and as I suspected, quite large for primos! First I had scallops with citrus, then clams with a tasty tomato broth…Amr had a yum veg soup, and monkfish with beans…and a great Rioja wine, which we later found out the Aussie girls had paid for, for the medical advice and help!

      Ribadiso da Baixo (11.1km / 725.4km)

      June 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We had a sleep in today, only waking at 7:20, a breakfast in the old town in Melide and then went to mass at 9:30am in the Chapel of San Antonio which was full of locals and quite vibrant.
We walked with Louise who also had a late start only starting at 10am. Again most of the walk was shaded thankfully as it was hot. We walked through eucalyptus plantations which was just like walking at home. We managed just 2 stops today, one at a local roadside fruit stall and the other for a cold drink. We’re under 50km to go! There was still plenty of banter!
We are staying in a small town that appears to exist for pilgrims. There are a few Albergues, no shop and only 1 large restaurant. The food was good but the service suffered from a lack of competition and at times was quite rude.
There is a river at the bottom of our village where we were able to soak our feet in cold water, sooooo good.

      Camino Day 26 - Melide

      September 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Late start today, around 9am, as Rod and Hollie are carrying a bit of tendinitis in legs and feet. A slow day, but nice as we made our way to Melide.
A bit of fog and mist but mostly sunny and cool.
Had to stop for octopus at the "best pulpo me Way" according to the guys cooking it the front. It was pretty good and the place was packed..
Our albergue was a bit out of the main town so we ordered pizza and settled down with a bottle of red and played cards till bed.

    • Day 41 - Palas de Rei to Melide - 16km

      October 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

20, 23, 10. “Huh”, you say “what are these numbers about Julie?” Those are the number of Kilometres I am doing over the next three days to reach Santiago. Unbelievable, in 3 days this will be done. I am so looking forward to it being done and if you ask any of the crowd I walk with that started in Saint Jean, they feel the same.

The funny thing is, as much as I want it to be done, it is more because I am ready for it to be done, not because I am sick of it and want it to be over. About a day or two before Sarria, I realized I have a sort of peace about me. I really think there is a better word for it, but I can’t think of it at this moment. I feel lighter, easy going, not so worried are a few other words to describe it. In fact, the feeling is so deep that the Sarria crowd does not bother me. I enjoy seeing all the different people and know that they have their own reasons for doing the camino. I have just chalked this up to a different part of the camino. Just like the Pyrenees, the Meseta, the big cities and the 100k people.

Last night I went to dinner with Rachel. Very sweet 19 year old girl from the US but is going to school in Sweden right now. We had some good chats and she struggles with what she wants to do with life (Something we all struggle with at some point).

Everyone has their own reason for doing the camino, even if they don’t know it. There are a lot of people who are here because it is a very cool hiking trip. I have no resentment there, it is true, it is a very cool hiking trip and doing 100km in 5 days is no easy task and most people cannot do that, so it is great they are challenging themselves. I explained to a few people, including Rachel, that yes, I am doing the camino this time in memory and honour of Jörg but when we did the camino the first time in 2009, it was really because it was a cool hiking trip across Spain. I had read some camino books, and understood the spiritual side and there was hope that something would change (and of course it did, my dear Jörg moved to Canada), but it wasn’t the initial driving force to do the walk.

Ok, enough about my thoughts and feelings, on to tell you about my day. I had a TERRIBLE sleep in the albergue. The albergue was nice, and no major snorers or people disturbing us, but the heat was unbearable. The people sleeping next to the windows had closed them and the room was an oven. I was on a top bunk so the heat was rising and there was nothing I could do to cool down. I actually have a fan, but it is too loud to use in the middle of the night. At one point I went down to the basement lounge to cool off. At about 6am, with hardly any sleep, I decided it was time for a hotel room. And I wanted a real hotel room, not a pension, not a Casa Rural, but an actual hotel. I found a 3 star hotel (extreme luxury in camino terms) that had a sale, and the room was going for 55 Euros. I snapped that one up. I am sitting in the room right now, writing this at a desk with the air conditioning on and looking out to the park across the street through my floor to ceiling windows. (I will attach photos of course!)

I walked alone for about 5km and then ran into Peggy (from New Hampshire) so we walked the rest of the way together into town (16km in total). She was going another 5km, so we had ice cream and then parted, but I am sure we will run into each other again.

After showering, I met up with Matt for a drink which was nice and we had a good chat. It is sooooo very hot still so it was time for me to get back to my air conditioning while I have it.

They have a buffet dinner here at the hotel at 7:30, and I first thought I would treat myself (I don’t even know how much it is), but I am so enjoying just relaxing in the room, that I think I might just survive on my nuts and treats in my bag. We will see. I probably should have something, but they also offer a breakfast, so maybe I skip dinner and just have a great breakfast. Oh, how tough these decisions are.

Before I go, I thought I should give you an update on my bed bug problem. I have not had any new bites. I have a feeling I just got bit that one night, but they didn’t hitch a ride with me. I am still keeping everything separate in my bag, and have decided when I get to Santiago, I will wash everything again, and empty my backpack and leave it in the sun for a couple hours in a black garbage bag (that is the famous trick to killing them and their eggs.)

Ok, going to go put my feet up and watch a little TV.

      Day 41-Melide

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

It rained during all but the last hour of our 12+ mile walk. It wasn't bad on the pavement but half the time we were on a dirt trail the turned into a dirt river with thick, mucky mud. I slipped at one point and landed on one knee. No real injury, just a dirty knee and a small cut on my hand.

A highlight of the day was meeting an American couple that moved to Spain five years ago. Kelli blogs about their life in Spain and just published a book that is set on the Camino. I was able to get a signed copy from her and we all had a great chat.

Then we trudged along several more miles in the rain. We didn't take many pictures because it was raining too hard so the ones you see are pretty tame. I'm proud that we toughed it out and walked every step. We saw a huge group of pilgrims waiting for a bus.

We're expecting more of the same tomorrow.

Day 27 Ferreira to Melide 578 km

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

OK today was the worst weather I have walked so far this trip.
It poured with rain and wind for 3 1/2 hours. There was nowhere to stop until 15km. I powered through it listening to Carrie Underwood. 💪 The saving grace was that it was relatively flat so I could pick up my pace to just over 13 min/ km.

At one point I saw 3 pilgrims huddled in the middle of the road.....I thought there might be a problem but no....they were taking a smoke break😅

Very muddy and water flowing everywhere! Reminded me of hiking on the West Coast Trail😂🤣 Except more road walking.
Not many pictures because of the weather.

When I did stop at the bar my gang was all there happy to see one another and complain about the weather. Some were actually hypothermic which was not good at all.
I saw Claudia again she was freezing. I luckily had 2 layers of my merino wool long sleeved tops which really worked well👍

After my break the rain stopped and the sun came out for a brief while.

Coming into Melide you could see a lot of Pilgrims. You had to be super careful on the roads as the drivers DO NOT YIELD TO Pilgrims😱😡

I met a lovely couple from Montana.
AND John is here!! He made great time. So nice to check in with him again. He gave me the link to his hiking group in Taiwan on the Meet up site

I am staying at the same Albergue that I stayed at last year. It is wonderful🤗

Just chilling now. There is a Pilgrims service at 8 pm that I am going to try and go to.

My wet boots created a few more blisters for me 😳

Anja sent me a pic of a baby burro. I will include it😍

So I have officially completed the Primitivo👏😂💪
But I am sad😥 as it was really spectacular🥳

      Day 24 Gonzar - Melide

      May 20 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      31.5 km (715 km from the start). 5h 56min on the Road. 39.000 steps. 2095 calories. 5.9 km/h

Last night hostel was great. Didn’t expect that as village is 39 inhabitants big 😂 Great room, huge pilgrim menu and best of everything - breakfast with eggs and bacon. Waited until 07:30am to get that breakfast and it was absolutely worth it.

Long stage today - considering I have been walking for 24 days now. 618m ascent and 707 descent - quite challenging when I am walking so much.

So many people on the trail - no backpacks, no dirty clothes. Spain has entered the Camino and this, what they are doing, is no challenge at all. It is walk in the park but if this is going to grant them shortcut to heaven 😂😂 - fine with me.

Staying in Melide - big city considering where I have been staying until now. Is it pizza day today? I am not talking about microwave heated supermarket pizza - I want a real deal 😂

Only 55 km to go - and only 2 days left. I am ready to get back to civilization - first acclimatizing in Porto - then returning to “civilian” life in Copenhagen 🥰

      Day 36 27.5k to Brea

      June 12 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 46 °F

It's been so cool in the Galacia region of Spain lately. It was 44 degrees when we left Melide this morning. Today involved a lot of forrest hiking, which is so beautiful. We hiked through many tunnels of trees and went through several groves of eucalyptus trees, which smelled heavenly. We usually eat something light before we head out and get caffe au lait and a real breakfast an hour or two later, but today we went through several towns before finding food at a tiny store set up in the forrest. The Civil Guard consists of officers from both Spain and France that patrol the Camino. Our cute hotel that has room for 18 people has a tiny pool. Getting up extra early tomorrow to hike into Santiago and arrive at the Cathedral de Santiago which has been our destination for a long time! So excited!Read more

      12. Tag: Ferreira nach Melide

      July 4 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Day 27. All day in Melide

      September 27 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Finally our rest day arrived. A much needed do nothing day. What we had not expected was to be informed we needed to be out of the Albergue from 9am to 1pm. Bloody hell, we wanted to sleep in. Out we trudged into the cold wind and showers. Found the city library and settled in for a read of long carried books. A little uncomfortable as the library was unheated. My Spanish SIM had expired so walked around looking for a phone shop. 10€ for 50GB and I was back online. With that much data I don't bother with WiFi. Back to hostel for an afternoon sleep. A perfect nothing day. A highlight of our stay has been the quality of the disability shower. Most Spanish shower areas are sorely wanting but not this one. Water drained perfectly, a hugh shower head and just plain nice. I've had 2 showers today and contemplating a 3rd.
Surprisingly, we are both looking forward to being back on the trail tomorrow. My shoes were beginning to fall apart so some duct tape surgery required. Looks ridiculous but only needs to last 55km, I say hopefully.
