      Pinos Puente to Moclín (15.5km)

      October 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Pinos Puente is a sad town. It has so much potential, but it looks like its inhabitants don't take pride in living in the town. The Camino goes over a nice bridge, but the surrounds are dirty.

The first 5 or so km are on roads, in town, and also as you leave town, until you reach Cortijo Búcor, which, in it's heyday must have been a successful farm. From then on, we walked through olive groves, on nice gravel tracks, enjoying the day.

We arrived at Olivares at about 11:30 am, and then the beautiful part of the day started. From Olivares to Moclín, there's only about 4km, but the elevation is over 400 metres. In places, the oath was steep, but our reward was the view!

And as we're climbing the last few metres, as the path levels out, the castle of Moclín comes into view. Perched high over the village, it looks amazing. We entered the village and then kept climbing to get to the church. We could see flags and decorations. We happened to be in the village for one of the days of the Romería del Cristo del Paño. The Cristo del Paño is a painting, gifted to the village by the Reyes Católicos in the 15th century. It is supposed to have cured the sacristan of his cataracts a century later. The disease was known as as the cloth disease, or "enfermedad del paño", hence the name.

The church was overflowing with people. Whilst we were at the church, which is right at the top of the village, we decided we would see if we could visit the castle. It was an interesting visit. The aljibe is virtually still intact, but much of the rest is in ruins, with most of the damage caused during the civil war.

We're staying at Casa la Cabra, owned by a British couple, Steve and Sarah. We're in a very comfortable and well equipped studio apartment. They suggested 3 places for lunch. We picked one, the Bar Kiosco Nono, where the tapas are €1 each, and the drinks €2 each.

Day 15: Pinos Puente to Moclín

      May 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Fifteenth day: from Pinos Puente to Moclín, 15km.
Last year we walked from Granada to Pinos Puente. It was not a very interesting experience, the night in the only hotel in Pinos Puente was not restful, and the town seemed to be trying to lower the average cleanliness of the area.
So this year we decided to take a bus, number 325, from the centre of Granada to Pinos Puente, and walk to Moclín.
The first 5km of the stage are not done in the best conditions. They follow the GR-3408 road, which is very busy with morning commuters, and where motorists do not observe the speed limits. We opted for a safety measure: send the main part of the troop ahead with a fluorescent yellow vest waved at arm's length 😄
After Cortijo de Bucór, the path improves, and we pass through olive trees to Olivares.
The highlight of the day is the climb to Moclín for the last 3-4km. A fairly steep climb, punctuated by shady areas, among the pine trees. Halfway up, a small chapel offers a little coolness. At each bend, a glance backwards regales us with superb views.
And finally, at the last bend in the path, we see the Alcazaba of Moclín, with its ruins.

      Pinos Puente to Moclin

      February 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We took the suggestion of Andrew G and took the bus (nbr. 225 from Calle Rector Marin Ocete, close to the train station) to Pinos Puente as the walk out of Grenada is through an ugly industrial area, walking on pavement. When we asked the driver to disembark at Las Flores (last stop) he insisted on taking us a bit further (we were the last people on the bus) because he said that area was dangerous due to narco activity. We quickly joined the route and walked through olive groves, pausing at a village for food before beginning the steep 3.5 km ascent to Moclin. It is strenuous but quite do-able with lots of pauses and drinks of water.

We have now seen 3 peregrinos since we began in Almeria.

G: the walk up to the castle in Moclin is well worth it. Spectacular views and a last look on the Sierra Nevada?

      Moclin to Alcalá la Real

      February 19 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

D: What a beautiful start to the day! A steep descent out of Moclín into a misty valley. Much of the rest of the day was through olive groves, although there was still quite a lot of uphill and we were tired by the end of the 22km walk. We had fruit and nuts to snack on today, but need to do a better job of finding food that will help us to power through the day.

      38 long kms to Moclin

      April 21, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

But I’m here in time to go visit the gorgeous castle!!!

Today was much longer than I had planned. My first choice was to try the new alternative that goes through a town called Abolote. Missed that somehow so I knew I’d have a longer day. Then I managed to get on the longer (but nicer I’m sure) off road route through olive groves up and up and then down and down before the last, and biggest, ascent. Gorgeous and not too tough but I was dragging a bit by then. And the snow covered Sierra Nevada are still in view!

The way out of Granada was the typical city exit. 5 kms on asphalt past warehouses, dumped junk, unfinished subdivisions, etc. After the town of Pinos Puente, the landscape changed dramatically and I walked for kms and kms through olive groves. And 9 hours later I arrived in Moclin. I’m staying in a Casa rural—no Albergue here—and have a decent room for25€.

I lucked out by being here on a weekend, because the castle is only open on Saturday and Sunday. It is really impressive. I’m glad I had enough energy I go up and visit it. Tomorrow’s 24 km will seem like a walk in the park. That is tempting fate I know.

Fajn menší lezecké oblasti v okolí Granady, vždycky s fotogenickou vesničkou a hradem v pozadí, klasifikace přísná jak ani v krase není.
I letecký podmínky vychází pěkně a objevujeme další letový terén u větrníků v Loja, kde si Kačka vychutnává pořádnou koupel ve vaně.Read more
