      Moratinos

      May 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      Day 23-Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Well, today was supposed to be a short day, about 9 miles, but it turned into 12 miles due to a minor screw up of mine.

We had a delightful time walking from town to town today, stopping for coffee or a beverage each time. As we arrived in Moratinos for a break, we were surprised by a guy who was doing wax stamps rather than ink ones. We got our stamp and stopped for a snack and a beverage. Then we wandered another mile and a half to the next town, San Nicolás, to spend the night. When we arrived, I checked my phone for the name of our place...Hostal Moratinos...sinking feeling sets in. Why would Hostal Moratinos be in a town a mile and a half away from Moratinos? Uh-oh. A google search later had us walking back to Moratinos to the exact place we stopped for our break. The stamp guy and the hostal owners had a good laugh. Oh well, we added three miles to our Camino. We needed to burn our breakfast calories anyway.Read more

      Day 23 - Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Very different day, today we made our first big mistake. It was going to be about a 10 mile walk. We stopped in a small town to get our Camino passport stamped and to have a refreshment, our final stop was just under 2 miles away. Well, when we got to the next town we realized we made a big mistake.

Make sure to watch both videos to catch what happened. Overall we walked around 12 miles.

      Sunrise at Moratinos

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Lédigos before 6am, in the dark, and didn't use the head torch. There were no clouds, and we took a moment to look at the stars. To be honest, they weren't that bright. There was a bit of village light and the first glows of the morning already showing. But I got to see some of the northern constellations, which I'm not at all familiar with, and a couple of meteorites (shooting stars).
Sunrise came when we were ordering breakfast at Moratinos. The 3rd photo, showing a hill with small openings that look like hobbit houses (you may need to enlarge) was across the road from the cafe. We learnt that they are wine cellars! The Spaniards take their wine very seriously!
The other photos show examples of mud walls found in the same town.

    • Sunday and Monday Long Walking Days

      September 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

In the last few days, we have walked about 30 km each day. That is a lot of walking! But the flat terrain of the Meseta makes this doable.

Finding a place to sleep at the end of a long day has been more of a challenge. We have been successful in booking an Albergue two days ahead. But we have noticed since we left Burgos there are many more pilgrims on the trail. Since COVID, quite a few Hostels and Albergues have closed. So the supply of beds isn’t what it used to be. In our planning, we try to decide if we will shoot for our “planned destination” or stop and stay in a town before or after our planned stop.

We get up before the sun and take in beautiful sunrises. Morning on the Camino is my favorite time of the day.

As I have mentioned before, once we reach the town we are staying in, and receive our bed assignment, we shower and wash our clothes. Then it is cocktail time, dinner and bed. I thought you might like to see the luxurious washing facilities we have on the Camino! Trust me, we are happy to have the wash basin and clothesline! It is a plus if they provide clothes pins otherwise I use the large diaper pins I brought! These are essential if it is windy!

Thank you for the prayers! I am still sore from the fall — but improving every day. I am praying for all of you! ✝️💜

      Hobbitt Houses in Moratinos?

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

No, the hobbits don't live here!

We saw these little caves built into the hillside in the little town of Moratinos that we passed through.

These little caves are called "bodegas," used in the past for food storage and wine-making. Moratinos is one of several hillside bodega groups visible along the Camino de Santiago trail, part of a wine culture that dates back 2,000 years to the Romans.Read more

      To Moratinos

      September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

      September 21

We have had some long days and our bodies were feeling it! So…because it was supposed to rain today, we took a taxi to Calzadilla de la Cueza (saving 17 k). Boy did it rain and blow! Alan wore his new poncho and I looked lovely in my rain skirt and jacket. We would not have won any beauty contests, that’s for sure! 😂

Paul and Mirabelle walked very fast to meet us in Ledigos for lunch and by then (thank goodness), the rain was done. We met a very nice old man at the bar. He didn’t speak English and we know very little Spanish, but he communicated his wish for us to have a good Camino (buen Camino) and then told us to eat the bocadillo for fuel for our Camino walk.💕 He’s just an example of how kind the local people are. They go out of their way to wish us well or point us in the right direction. 🙂

We are staying at Albergue San Bruno tonight. It is owned by an Italian couple so tonight’s dinner had an Italian touch. I really enjoy the communal pilgrim meals. It’s fascinating listening to the different languages and watching how we all communicate. It’s a good thing. 🌍💕

Our shorter day today combined with another short day to Sahagun tomorrow should help our bodies recover a bit, and walking and visiting with Mirabelle and Paul is just icing on the cake! 🙂

      67. Wandertag

      June 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Terradillos to Berclanos De Real Camino

      April 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Another flat day across the Meseta. We set off at 7.30am to a beautiful sunrise.

We only walked a few kilometres before we had our morning coffee and a croissant.

The weather was great. The temperature was a lovely 20C.

Why mid morning, we arrived in A large town called Sahagun. It was time for second breakfast. We had already walked 17kms with another 10kms to go.
We carried on just chatting to other pilgrims from all over the world. We arrived at our Albergue at the beginning of the village.

Clothes washed and a few beers before we chilled out.

Tomorrow will be 26kms but the weather forecast does not look good

      Lightened Heart

      September 24, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

In the year and half since Marita's heart skipped its final beat, I've been collecting heart shaped stones. We've added dozens to our rock garden and inside decor. As we were so vigilante about weight on the Camino, I told myself that I wasn't going to pick up any on the way, BUT I have been tempted by 2. The strange thing is that they both disappeared from my pack. Perhaps it is a sign that I've moved on to a lighter heart. Remembering Marita on her birthdayRead more
