We bekijken de pelgrimskapel San Salvador. We kunnen er niet in, hij is gesloten. Wanneer we weer weg gaan komt er iemand aanlopen die er lijkt te werken. Even vragen of we hier ook een stempel kunnen krijgen. Vijf minuten wachten krijgen we te horen. Doen we, in de schaduw natuurlijk en we verlaten de kapel inderdaad een mooie stempel rijker.Read more

Uterga to puente la reina

Different opinions on how far I walked today, let's say around 8 kms, mostly all down with a few small ups...got a bit lost in Ubanos, such a quiet village...with beautiful homes and some falling into disrepair. Again the scenery just fabulous and I noted the olive trees and how they've been pruned.

What a beautiful environment to live in... Many people commute to work in the bigger cities. Shared bege gardens looking amazing coming into Puente la Reina township. I said hola to a group of Argentinian women architects who are enjoying the buildings and working out how to replicate or change some things.. we did some stretching exercises together which was fun took some photos and off we all went..

The albergue here has a big kitchen but not well serviced, the stove tops taking forever to boil water for my spaghetti.Read more

Pamplona To Puente de ls Reina

It’s a long walk into and out of Pamplona. We had fantastic chocolate croissants and coffee in the first little Pueblo walked thru on our way to our first big landmark, the Alto de Perdón. Coming down was rough. We had very delicious tortias for lunch. Next we took our second detour of the Camino to visit the Ermetia de Santa Maria de Eunate. We arrived Puente La Reina with almost 30 Kilómetros logged on the trail on the Garmin Watch. But we always walk more for food and seeing the sights of what ever town we visit. The temperature has dropped so it looks like we’ll sleep well tonight. I’m taking a lot of B-roll footage on the GoPro but don’t want to spend much time editing… I’ll put up a bit when I can like tonight. We’re crossing paths with earlier acquaintances. It’s like seeing old friends after years. Maybe it’s the shared experiences and telling of Camino “war stories” that bonds us so fast?!?!Read more

Uterga to Puenta la Reina

Our longest walk yet today, 23.7 kilometers to Puete la Reina. Time went by so fast as we walked and talked with fellow Pilgrims Jim and Sandy. But we are tired now.

We found another Fronton today.

We also found several fields of dead black sunflowers, it took us a few minutes to realize what we were looking at!

Waiting for a washing machine to finish while sit on the "Chilling Deck" of Albegue Puenta. Having a beer and wine, then dinner when clothes are dry.Read more
Traveler Oh my goodness, now I see where we met you. We spent the coffee time at the same terrace as you. The terrace with the too low hanging sun shading for you (smile....do you remember?). We were so tired that night, but I am sure, we will meet us twice in an other town on this way.

Die Kirche liegt am arragonischen Teil des Jakobsweges, erst wenig später an der Puente la Reina, vereinigt er sich mit dem Camino Frances. Die Kirche abseits im Niemandsland und war heute leider nicht geöffnet.Read more

Puente de Reina

Einigermaßen erledigt und für meine Verhältnisse sauspät in Puente angekommen, fing es leicht an zu regnen. Dank WLAN in bzw vor der Herberge erreichten mich dann tolle Neuigkeiten: Unsere Katze, die sich richtig doll an der Hinterpfote verletzt hat und auf drei Beinen läuft, ist dank Jettes und Jürgens Pflege und unserem Tierarzt auf dem Weg der Besserung und verträgt sogar den ganz und gar nicht gewohnten Hausarrest gut. UND: Beide Profs haben Jaspers Bachelorarbeit mit 1,3 benotet. Daraufhin saß ich also im Regen und Tränen der Dankbarkeit liefen auch übers Gesicht. War doch das Motto des Tages, sei dankbar für das, was du hast.Read more

Very much to our disappointment it was closed and is open only on weekends
It used to be open 24/7 and had the albergue
Coram Deo crowd: this is the place where Gabi and Seth meet Katja and Jan's and feel magical
Louis and I spent good 30mins here

Day 3 Making lemonade.

We got off to a good start. Nicole fell in love with the cats just outside Case Baztan.
We stopped for coffee in the next town, Maneru. Then I realized I had forgotten to leave the room key from last night. So I had to call a cab to go back to Urtega, and while waiting for the cab, the café had finished making the first tortilla of the day, and it was warm and delicious! It's probably the best tortilla of our trip! After we took the cab back to Urtega, I had the driver take us to the Eunate church at Maneru to make up for lost time.

Most of the walk was through fields and shaded areas except around Puente De La Reina. The highlight of the day for me was stopping to see the Eunate octagon church in Maneru. No one really knows the origin of it. Some say it was the Templars who built it.

Puent de la Reina means Queen's bridge. The bridge there was built by a Queen of Navarre in the Middle ages. It was for the pilgrims walking the Camino. Nobody remembers which queen, though.

We mistakenly thought all the tough up hills were behind us, but the walk up to Cirauqui was tough! We stopped in the town just before to rest and have a well-deserved beer.

Cirauqui is on top of a not so little hill itself. At one point, we saw a sign that said Casa Maralotx was 200 m further away. After waking there, I think it meant 200m vertically! Literally, it was at the top of the Camino in town. Dinner again was great. Joanne and Paul stayed at the same place, and we met a bunch of other wonderful pilgrims, both before and during the communal dinner. Dinner was vegetarian: chick pea stew and may have been the best communal meal of the trip. I made a sketch, too!Read more

Alta del Perdón

I was dreading today. Not the climb, but the prospect of a six-hour hike in the rain. I woke at 3AM to a raging storm, and thought about staying indoors today.

So glad I didn't! The reward for dragging myself out the door was a stunning morning, and a terrific hike past one of the Camino's best known icons. Early tomorrow I'll pass yet another.Read more

Tag 25 // Wir sind nass

Und zwar klatschnass. Keine 10km vor dem Ziel auf dem letzten Gipfel hat es uns so richtig erwischt. Diesmal kein Schauer sondern richtig heftiger Starkregen. Eigentlich hatten wir gehofft noch vor dem Regen in die Herberge zu kommen, doch am Ende hat uns eine halbe Stunde gefehlt. Auf den Fotos einmal wir in nass und der Anblick der letzten Hügelkette, die uns zum.Verhängnis wurde.
Zu unserem Glück steht hier jedoch ein Wäschetrockner, so dass die nassen Klamotten schon wieder trocken sind. Bei den Schuhen sind wir optimistisch, das es bis morgen reicht.

Vor Pamplona mussten wir uns entscheiden, ob wir es bei der Überquerung des Passes belassen oder doch noch etwas weiter fahren. Da über Mittag das Wetter eigentlich wieder sehr gut war und wir noch Zeit hatten, fiel die Entscheidung auf eine Herberge 20km hinter Pamplona.

Der bei booking.com als drei Bett Zimmer angepriesene Raum ist eher ein Doppelzimmer, insofern passt es ganz gut dass wir nur zu zweit sind. Bei Gemeinschaftsdusche und geimensamen Abendessen kommt zum ersten Mal so richtiges Pilger Feeling auf. Auch wenn das Essen nach den Genüssen Frankreichs eine harte Umstellung ist.

Der heutige Tag war mit 1.700HM nach dem Mt. Ventoux vom Höhenunterschied der schwerste Tag. Dafür sind wir mit 100km wieder ordentlich weit gekommen. Mal schauen wie unsere Muskeln morgen uns morgen sauer sind.

Der Ibañeta Pass ist relativ gut zu fahren, da immer wieder flachere Stücke kommen, in denen man etwas Druck vom Pedal nehmen kann und etwas durchschnaufen kann. Auch ich mit meinem relativ "dicken" kleinsten Gang hatte nur bei 2-3 steileren Rampen etwas Mühe. Und das trotz Gepäck. Hart wird der Pass eigentlich erst dadurch, dass sowohl auf französischer als auch auf spanischer Seite es nicht einfach einmal hoch und runter geht, sondern immer wieder kleine Zwischensteigungen zu bewältigen sind. Beim Blick auf den reinen Höhenunterschied zwischen Tal und Berg übersieht man das schnell mal.

An einem dieser nachgelagerten Gipfel ist auch das angehängte Bild entstanden. Pilgern wie damals. Echt authentisch mit Cola und Sandwich am Imbisswagen.

Morgen früh bekommen wir hier in der Herberge noch ein Frühstück. Soweit mir bekannt ist, sind die Spanier, ähnlich wie die Franzosen, nicht berühmt für ihre Frühstückskünste. Aber um erstmal bis zum nächsten Supermarkt zu kommen sollte es reichen.Read more
