Cogollos de Guadix to Guadix 12.8km

      September 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

As we left Cogollos de Guadix this morning, it felt cooler than recent days. We looked at the mountains, and saw a sprinkling of snow.

This sort of cool weather makes it ideal for hot air balloons, and we saw three going up and down.

Nothing special to report on the walk. We followed a quiet road, then a gravel trail, initially through almond orchards.

Paco, the owner of the bar Los Mellizos, told us that the entry into Guadix, through the barrio de las cuevas, was very nice. And indeed it was. It is a tourist attraction, so there are a number of caves that are open to visitors. We came across people who recommended visiting the Cueva del Mirador, also known as Cueva de José. It was a donativo entry, and a real lived in cueva. José was born there, and he was the fourth generation living there.

The Alcazaba is open only one day a week, and only for guided visits. Unfortunately not on the days we're spending in Guadix.

After settling in to our hotel room, we had lunch at a bar on the Plaza de la Constitución. Unfortunately it was quite ordinary. Interestingly, we were surrounded by French speaking tourists.

We then spent the rest of the afternoon visiting the cathedral. Unfortunately the tower was closed. Apparently, the views from the top are great. It will be for another time.

We're staying two nights in Guadix, so we'll have time to go exploring.
