      Barcelona, Spain

      March 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Our flight arrived at 3am into Spain so we made our way to an airport hotel to sleep until checkout at 10am. After a nap and breakfast, we headed to our apartment which was located just off La Ramblas. We spent the afternoon walking around and shopping in Barcelona. For dinner we enjoyed some tapas and sangria.

The next day we hopped on an open top bus tour, which took us around the major landmarks of Barcelona, including the unusual and eye catching work of Gaudi. For dinner, we ate at a Japanese fusion restaurant called Ikibana. We had the most delicious tasting menu and cocktails!

      Gothic Quarter

      January 8, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to the Ronda de Sant Pere.
It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.

The quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, and includes the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks. Much of the present-day fabric of the quarter, however, dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries.
El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area, along with the former Sinagoga Major.

The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares.
Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

The gothic quarter is the oldest part of Barcelona and so far the most beautiful. It is made up of some little laneways that trail around the oldest part of the city.
There are some lovely little shops in this part of the city and there are parts that remind me of Melbourne.

We met in Placa Reial and then walked to the first of many cathedrals and basilicas.
Our guide Miguel was a very good guide and worked on the principle of you pay him what you think he is worth, which both Jen and I love...
There is a photo of a Gaudi lamppost that he was commissioned to do for the local government which was the last piece he did for them because they did not have a good relationship as a result of that commission.
We began our walk from this square and worked our way around the various streets and lane ways that make up this part of Barcelona.

The Gothic quarter contains many old cathedrals and is also the first citadel or walled area of Barcelona as most of the lanes are paved in the traditional manner so they date back to the 16th & 17th century.

      Sabis Geburtstag und Gotic Viertel

      September 8, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

      August 1, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

A Square in the Barri Gòtic next to Las Ramblas.
The original building on the site was the Capuchin convent of Santa Madrona, which was demolished in 1835. Plaça Reial was then designed by Francesc Daniel Molina i Casamajó later in the XIX9th century.

The square's lampposts were designed by Antoni Gaudí.

      Barcelona - Day 3

      August 14, 2021 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

We started the day walking a couple of miles up to a clinic to get the covid tests required to get back into the US. I am happy to announce that we have been certified virus-free, and so will be on our way back home tomorrow!

After a celebratory breakfast we walked a short distance to the Sagrada Familia. It’s a cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudi that has been under construction for 130 years. It is a spectacular, organic, awe inspiring structure. Dale had seen it on a previous trip to Barcelona, so he left me to tour the interior and museum. Unfortunately, they don’t have a ticket office. Only online sales. My credit card refused to work on their site, so the Sagrada Familia tour will be saved until Debbie and I return to Barcelona.

I spent the afternoon wandering the narrow streets of the old town and taking a tour of a house Gaudi designed for his main patron and good friend, Güell. We ate our last dinner in Spain, and went to bed early. We have an early flight out, first to London and then on to Seattle.

      Viele duftige Katzen und Tschernobyl

      March 24, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

“Geil”! Was wollte mir mein Teenager damit sagen?
Also alles kaum zu ertragen.

      Arrival in Barcelona, Casa Battló

      March 27, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Slept like the dead for several blissful hours before it was time to get up again and catch an early flight to Barcelona. The travel was uneventful, and we made it into Barcelona around 11am.

Our hotel room want ready, so we dropped our bags and went for a walk along La Rambla. We stopped in Mercado De La Boquiera and sampled fruit juice, a spicy burrito, and some mixed seafood.

Continuing our walk down La Rambla, we ended up at Casa Battló, an extremely cool house rearchitected by Antoni Gaudí in the early 1900's, and refurbished over the years. "It is a universe of symbolism, a canvas of marine inspiration, a dream world, which evokes nature with its organic elements and is suggestive of fantasy." Extremely unique, the house has few straight lines and was not just visually appealing, but had inventive and effective methods of heat and ventilation. The VR-augmented tour was very well done, even if we did feel a bit silly with the provided blue headset and pointing the given iPhone at everything.

We went looking for a beer, but the bar we wanted to go to was closed, so we decided to check in and take a much needed siesta.

      Barcelona, Spain

      March 28, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today was an awesome day! Jackson had the day off so we got to go out and spend lots of time together out in port. We went to Top Tapas for some pizza which was good. Then we just explored, finding an amazing market, going to a supermarket for some snacks and walking along the harbour front. Now it’s time for a quick nap before work.Read more
