      More Pamplona

      April 15 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Seriously this city is so amazing. The old old history really makes USA seem so young.

And we enjoyed walking around, visiting the central cathedral and having a chance encounter with some early bull training.

Thank goodness we both have Hoka shoes- apparently the shoe to have for the Camino 😜

      Festival!

      September 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We arrived in Pamplona to find streets filled with people, families, all eating and drinking wine. Found out they are having their annual grape harvest festival. Varies by date depending on the actual grape harvest, go figure! Was fun to wander through it, a beautiful day!

Starting to establish a routine. Wake up, pack up, hit the road. Walk an hour or so till a good breakfast option appears and then eat. Walk more, take breaks as needed, snack, walk some more, arrive! Find albergue, feel relieved, check in, find bunk (my first top bunk is tonight), shower, do some laundry. Wander, eat, maybe enjoy a beverage with new friends, sleep, repeat.

I’m glad to be learning a routine. Looking forward to settling into it and getting a little more inwardly focused at some point. Loving the whole process.

Pictures of a stretch of path that reminded
me a lot of Ireland, the courtyard of our albergue, and my and others’ laundry drying in said courtyard.

      No slug updates today!

      Etappe 3: Zubiri nach Pamplona

      September 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Pamplona Iruna

      September 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The name Pamplona is thought to originate from times of Roman occupation by Julius Caesar's rival Pompey around 75BC. The city is also know as Iruna and is one of the three Southern French or Northern Spainish cities that form part of the Basque cultural region.

Our apartment on Calle Curia was so centrally located everything I needed to do on my rest day was no more than 50m away. While Pamplona becomes the centre of the world for a day or two during the running of the bulls, the rest of the year it remains a lovely ancient city worthy of a visit for it well presented cathedral that displays a thousand years of history within its wall. There is access to many parts of the cathedral including the Roman foundations and mosaics, naves and many chapels of worship built in different eras. The modern displays brought parts of it history to life and the cloisters were an architectural delight.

I tried my first Spanish hot chocolate and while it looks good, it didn't live up to expectations but occupied me while I checked out a cafe famous for being frequented by Hemingway.

I have arranged to test out a pack porting service and while I have a long walk tomorrow, hopefully the lighter load will put a spring in my step or at least stop my feet from feeling like lead weights. Fingers crossed.

      Tomorrow is the day!

      September 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

“Home is behind, the world ahead.” - J. R. R. Tolkien

Well, I made it safe and sound to Spain last night. Finally got to my Albergue at 9:30pm after 3 flights, 2 buses and a total of 23 1/2 hrs since I left home.

Today I needed to get to Pamplona, my start point. I start walking tomorrow. No idea how far I will make it - the ideal is approx 25 km but the reality I am sure, will be less.

Pamplona is a lovely city (as far as cities go). I was able to check in to my Albergue - Casa Ibarrola then went in search of new set of poles, and a small pocket knife. Saw the Cathedral de Santa Maria (stunning) and had a tour of the famous Plaza de Tores de Pamplona (where the bullfights happen and the running of the bulls ends, during the festival of St Fermin). Had dinner on the Central Plaza and indulged in one of the best burgers I have ever had! Huge homemade patty, slab of goat cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce and tomato. And of course a 2€ glass of wine. I think I am going to enjoy Spain :-)

      Pintxos = girl dinner

      March 28 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Pamplona must have had a massive injection for Easter, and/or they're doing something really right because for a town of ~200k the streets were FULL. I had an idea of a dinner spot but after walking past many absolutely heaving pintxos bars to get there and finding it very quiet indeed, I saw the red flag for what it was and abandoned the ship.

Pintxos culture is great, especially for people like me that rarely want a meal, rather eight bites of disparate things (aka girl dinner). It took a bit of standing back and watching to figure out how though. Bars were overflowing into the street, glasses and plates balanced on bins and bollards and bike seats. It was a bit like trying to board an greased elephant doing cartwheels, but I eventually bobbed up out of the swell clutching a beer and something fried, and sat in the gutter with my trophies.

Sliding a few doors down in search of a new one, I saw Nicole and a few others I recognised but didn't know, and went and joined them. After a while the others peeled off leaving me, Nicole and Charles, an Irish secondary school teacher with incredibly round eyes and a Czech husband he was clearly missing. Charles stood quite strongly opposed to questions like where are you from, so instead asked me if I'd rather be invisible or able to fly. He was absolutely delighted with my answer, and satisfied that it had given him a far greater insight to my character than something an accent gives up anyway.

On a very circuitous wander back to the albergue we tossed around a few more would you rathers, and were having such a nice time we decided we'd have just one more at a bar in sight of the doors, so we wouldn't get lost again and miss curfew (they are really serious about the lock outs).

In the way that you feel freedom to do with strangers, particularly pilgrims, where simply knowing each of us is doing this is an act of intimacy, we capped the night off with vulnerable and honest conversation about referendums, love, and the human spirit. The gift Charles gave that will stick with me is the apparently Irish saying 'what's for you won't pass you'. Cheers.

      Tag 3: Zubiri - Pamplona

      February 22 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Pamplona

      July 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

We had some time to check out the city before bed. A quick description in photo order: Hemingway's Corner, (we made a toast to him with a cold one); a parade in the streets,( Saint Fermin's Day and the running of the bulls is next week; standing in front of the draw bridge that leads to Pamplona's center; a beautiful cathedral;the signs and yellow arrows that have guided our way; an albergue dorm where we will be sleeping tonight. Buenos noches a todos.🥱Read more
