      Early morning start

      August 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Stop in Palace de Rei after 25 km! 3.5h more to go today to escape the tourists! But the feets are aching a lot! Theae hobby pilgrims even have their own stamps to cheat. 🤦🏼
The sky was very nice this early morning - unfortunately the pictures couldn’t capture it well! So Melide today, where the specialty is grilled Pulpo (Octopus)Read more

      Day 33

      September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Well !!! Not too sure what’s happened, but this morning was like a sponsored walk for the first 17 km’s!! I literally overtook about 150 ( at least ) people!!! Where have they all come from ?!!
Despite that today was a really lovely walk, albeit a rather chilly one..
i again met Alexander.. we’re buddies now..
Today went through quite a variety of scenery, helped by some of it being in fog, sometimes clouds and some in glorious sunshine ..
It was a DEFINITE moment when I passed the marker that said I now had less 100 km’s to go!!! Amazing after them starting at 800 to go!!
I’m do looking forward to finishing and going home, but I’m also thinking of where and which one I can do next 😬😂…

      Day 34

      September 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Not too sure what happened to today’s.. I left it uploading and it’s disappeared 😩 the internet/WiFi Is really rubbish here, so maybe it was just taking too long..
Anyway I’ll do a quick recap now before I head off for breakfast..
I started the day a little bit worried about my back! I woke you with it seriously stiff and uncomfortable. Having trouble bending over, I ended up sat on the floor to put my socks and shoes on and sort my bag 😳
It was a seriously chilly start again, also really really busy for the first 15 km’s.. it then thinned out a bit for a good while and I hardly saw anyone for the last 7 or 8 km’s.. bliss!!
Whilst I’d been ok walking, I really struggled to get warm once I stopped, even a hot shower and virtually all of my layers didn’t help much.
An early night was called for.. still cold 🥶..I seriously think the person in the room upstairs was jumping around in boots until about midnight!! Few hours later, I am no kidding, woken up by the serious snoring from next door!!! I think I’ll sleep well tonight 😂

    • Peaceful

      September 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

I had 22 km to walk today. It was rainy and cold, then later sunny and warm. The breathtaking landscape along the trail was very peaceful! Every day, multiple times of the day we hear the rooster crow…and crow…and crow…
The end of the hike was a very steep, long descent! It has irritated my knee. I am elevating it as I write.
Livestock was abundant everywhere you turned!
We are in Portomarin, tomorrow Palas de Rei!
P.S. downside of the countryside is the animal 💩 droppings! 😣

Well we had a long day today, 17 miles down the road. Morning was foggy and beautiful, then sun came out in afternoon and it became hot. Lots more Walkers today as we are in the last 100km, Sarria is a popular starting point for many camino walkers.Read more

      Vilachá

      October 5, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

12.4 miles walked. Today was...slightly frustrating. I'm trying my best to keep the Camino spirit. With all the new people that started in Sarria and will only be doing the last 100km it has gotten very crowded. Despite that, it was a beautiful day. The landscape was so green.
We started early and got to watch the sunrise over the mountains.
Lunch was interesting. We stopped at a place that had a buffet set out. The price was donativo meaning you could pay whatever you wanted. Food was good too. I got to try some things that I had been too nervous to order at a restaurant in case I didn't like it.
The place we are staying tonight is great. An oasis from the busy. It's run by an American couple, and by the smells coming from the kitchen, dinner is going to be delicious.

Day two Camino: 17 miles 🔥

      October 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

We started today bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to conquer the day! Soon after we started though we were hit with a pretty steep hill, pouring rain and high winds. But not to worry- we had the gear!! We threw on our raincoats, rain pants and even rain cover for our backpacks! We continued throughout the day walking with a steady stream of other pilgrims. We stopped for lunch- bacon and cheese sandwich- and then for ice cream of course! As the miles passed our feet definitely were feeling it! The newness and wonder wore off pretty quickly! By mile 14 we were pretty done but we dug deep and knocked out the final 3! We arrived at our hotel- a 218 year old farm house with beautiful grounds and a delicious meal. We are definitely beat and glad for our “short” day of 9 miles tomorrow!

    • Day 42

      Portomarin

      October 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Day 38 - Yesterday I had gotten a bit wet in the rain and my shoes had gotten completely soaked! So in Sarria I found a pilgrim equipment shop and looked for shoes similar to what I was wearing. I didn’t find those , but I found a pair of comfortable Keen sandals. I wore those today and they seemed to work fine on the slopes. It was another beautiful walk today, about 14 miles in my brand new Keens. Initially there were hoards of people - because remember I told you that a lot of people join at or near Sarria ? So I walked really fast to get ahead - practically running at times. This paid off and about 6 miles into it I was able to pass most of them and find a wonderful cafe for lunch - a cafe that didn’t have lines. Then stopped in Vilacha, the village just before Portomarin and had a beer at this really cute villa with a courtyard. The owner is Italian and this is his summer home and he runs a bar-cafe. In the winter he lives in A Coruña, a coastal town. I’m quite fascinated by people that have moved from other countries to Spain…and at the same time it amazes me that more people are not moving here. 😀
Oh and I forgot to mention that it’s my birthday today and my two friends Ginny and Steve took me out to a fancy dinner. They also got me a gift - a silver chain and pendant with a Camino shell. ( Yes Anand, I did get an unexpected gift).

      Etappe 26 - Portomarin 2

      October 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Gerade kam mein Australier, Patrick, unverhofft hier an.

    • Day 38

      Portomarin

      October 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Today held a gift, a milestone and a discovery. The gift was the walk. It was a gift, for all the work we have put in the previous weeks, to walk with strength we never could have imagined in such a beautiful area of Spain.

We hit the milestone of 100 kilometers left before we get to Santiago. That means we have covered over 700 kilometers or 435 miles so far and have less than 60 miles to go! I am so impressed by Peg, covering all this without a single blister, failed joint or muscle and without a complaint. She has just killed it.

The other thing this milestone brings is a lot more people walking. In Europe, taking a week off and covering this 100k is a very common undertaking. At the albergue we are in today there is even a large group of high school kids doing it. BTW, I have included a photo of one of the three dormitory rooms (rooms separated by curtains)
in the albergue to give a sense of the hostel life. This facility sleeps 130 people. It could be a long (loud) night 😳.

And now the discovery. As I walked, I thought of this post and how to describe our day. I soon realized I was out of adjectives. I have used amazing, wonderful, peaceful, awesome, magical, hell Peg even use mist-ical which isn’t even a word. Today I realized there is no way to describe this adventure, you just have to do it and experience it for yourself. Each day we complete the four Camino tasks of walk, eat, wash and sleep and we learn and discover more about ourselves and others in doing these four basic things. But the only way to fully comprehend it is to live it.

      Buen Camino
